Anniversary dinner

Yeah, I don't love Del Posto. The room sort of annoys me. The food is certainly very good, though.

Anniversary dinner

For several years, my wife and I have been going to EMP for our anniversary. Neither of us like the sound of the changes there and we're looking for an alternative this year. Anything on the newish side that jumps to mind? We don't want too stuffy, but also want something celebratory. If possible, we'd like to keep it more downtown.

Yeah, I feel pretty much the same way as you do. The food is great. But I don't really enjoy eating there.

I've always liked USQ, but never understood why it was always on the Zagat's favorites list. It's a fine neighborhood place.

Uninspired

I would love to go to Torisi - haven't been yet, but I need a place that will take a reservation. I go to DBGB a fair bit , so that one doesn't feel like an occasion either. As for other things I like, I'm a huge David Chang fan, but Ssam Bar blows the reservation requirement and I've never been able to get a res at Momofuko Ko.

Uninspired

I'm trying to pick a place for my birthday dinner and somehow just can't get inspired. I don't feel like a temple of gastronomy (for which EMP is our go-to) and am hoping to find something fun, fresh and interesting. I don't want to go above, oh, about 23rd street. I've been loving Vandaag lately, if that's helpful, because nobody else is making food like that, but have been a little too often lately for it to feel like an occasion. Any ideas?

bocconcini, where to buy?

I like them best from Joe's Dairy. Faicco's pork store has good ones too.

Staying in the Village

I didn't suggest you could eat at these places for $15 and the original question didn't ask for that. The type of food at Smith's is very similar to Jane - American modern, fresh ingredients. I like it quite a lot better than Jane - I both think the food is a little better and the atmosphere a lot better. I find Jane feels quite cold. The vibe is very friendly and relaxed. I think it's a great neighborhood place. Good value for money. I agree the wine list is nothing special, but this really isn't a destination place.

Staying in the Village

Well, you're around the corner from Otto, Mario Batali's pizza place, so you should check that out. Keep an eye out for the man himself, he lives right by there. Smith's on MacDougal is a newish good place - white table cloth, but not extravagant. Try Kati Roll for tasty Indian take out. Heading a little east, Village Yokocho is a very fun Japanese place with food quite different from your typical Japanese restaurant in the US. If you like sushi, an interesting choice is Ushiwakamaru on Houston - while Blue Ribbon is fine, I find it a little standard. I love Jones (on Great Jones street) as a neighborhood place. Good burgers, good drinks, tasty, though not particularly authentic creole food. I don't think there are really many "hidden" places around.

Staying in the Village

I live very nearby. Are there particular kinds of places you're looking for? From there you have easy access to most of the East Village, Central Village, Soho, etc. so there are a lot of options.

Rare Bar and Grill is Terrific

I tried the Bleecker on once and wasn't impressed. Haven't gone back, even though I'm in the neighborhood.

Best dishes at Gordon Ramsay?

The subject line is basically it: what are recommended dishes at Gordon Ramsay? Frank Bruni liked the lobster best among mains in his update review but didn't offer much else.
