What did you cook at home this week?
I love the idea of substituting rice krispies for panko!
APRIL COTM AMFT/Greenspan: Nibbles and hors d'oeuvres; soups; salads, starters, and small plates
I made this tonight and loved it. I used Trader Joe's whole wheat couscous, which is ready in 5 minutes. I added regular and golden raisins, orange flavored craisins, and a few prunes. Sunflower seeds, pine nuts, and almonds. MMM!!! I think I'll have the rest for breakfast!
Wrentham - anything promising?
It's not gourmet, but Michael's Deli on Shears St. in Wrentham is very close to your location. They make decent sandwiches and have other hot foods available for takeout. If you go south on Rt. 1 you'll come to the Chieftain Pub, in Plainville - not gourmet but has very good food at good prices. it's just south of the intersection of Rts. 1 and 106. Heading north on Rt. 1 will bring you to Patriot Place in Foxboro, home of the New England Patriots. It's a big complex with shopping, movies, and many restaurants including some that are more upscale than the ones I've mentioned. Have fun!

Rice Krispies Treats
I'm quite sure that I use 1/2 stick butter and a 10 oz. bag of marshmallows when I make Rice Krispie treats. No need to more butter than that, IMO. All this talk about them makes me want to make some now!
Rice Krispies Treats
Those are so easy to make! Rice Krispies, butter, and marshmallows. You'd get the best results just making your own - the recipe is on the Rice Krispies box.
Moved to Needham - Need sushi
We enjoy the sushi at Zebra's in Medfield, which isn't too far from Needham.
romantic dinner outside Providence: Blackington Inn, DeWolfe Tavern, Little Inn?
I don't think you would be disappointed with the Blackinton Inn. It is a very pretty place and the food is wonderful.
Good places to eat in Sterling MA
You might want to post this on the New England board - you may get more responses. Good luck and have fun!
Killer Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Recipe
This is the recipe that I use as well. It's a family favorite!
best lobster roll
Three friends and I had lobster rolls from James Hook yesterday and I totally agree - very convenient and reasonably priced (especially since I was treating!). We all thought they were very tasty.
St. Germain Elderflower Liquer
My brother had a St. Germain cocktail in NYC and duplicated it at home. It's called the Grapes of Wrath. His recipe:
3 Kirkland brand vodka
1 St. Germain
1 apple juice
1 sauvignon blanc
Shake over ice and pour into cocktail glass. Add 1 or 2 frozen red grapes. Yum!
Decent (and reasonable) Chow in Copley on a Sunday Night?
The Franklin Cafe in the South End would be another possibility. I think all their entrees are less than $20 and the food and cocktails are very good. It would be about a 15 minute walk from Copley.
Between Prov. and Bos.
Trattoria Della Nonna in Mansfield may meet your specifications. Have fun!
I am mkaing Potato Gratin and want to know if I can slice the poatoes 4 hrs early?
I would go ahead and slice them and keep them in cold water until you are ready to use them.
Last minute Valentine's dinner date - where to go?
A friend very recently began dating someone special and would like to take her to dinner Saturday night. Is there any place, preferably in the North End, where they could have dinner on Valentine's Day without a reservation? Thanks for any suggestions, chowhounds!
Where do you buy your real vanilla beans?
Penzey's has an online presence as well if you don't live near Arlington.
Your Favorite South End Restaurant...please :)
I really like the Franklin Cafe. It's very cozy, the prices are reasonable, and the food is great. I love their steak frites. Their cocktails are good too. It's small though, and tends to get crowded. We always go early, like 6 pm or so, when we're in the area.
Ham Salad Recipe
My husband's family has a recipe for ham salad that I've tried to duplicate with pretty good results. Their recipe is very imprecise but what I do is put the leftover ham in the food processor and chop it up a bit then add a small jar of drained green olives, onion, a few hard boiled eggs, freshly ground black pepper, and mayo. Process that till it's the desired texture then stir in some cubed cheddar cheese. Fill sandwich rolls with this mixture, wrap in foil and bake in the oven till hot. My family loves these sandwiches.
So excited - No. 9 Park on Weds.!
I was there in October and had the prune gnocchi and pan seared scallops. Both were fabulous. Enjoy your dinner!
New Decade Birthday Celebration-No.9 or Locke?
Yes, that's right, it was called Mooo. It was nice to experience the bar there, then the two minute walk to No. 9 for dinner. Hope you enjoy your birthday celebration!
New Decade Birthday Celebration-No.9 or Locke?
My husband and I just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at No. 9 Park. We had a drink at the Federalist then walked around the corner to No. 9. It is definitely my favorite special occasion restaurant in Boston. Words cannot describe the gnocchi!
Restaurants in Stratton, VT area
You may want to search the board using "Manchester VT". There are many restaurants there and Manchester is about 7 miles from Peru.
BEST tres leches?
This is the one my Peruvian daughter-in-law makes. It's wonderful, and even better the next day.
Pastel de Tres Leches
This version makes 10 generous portions.
CAKE:
1 cup sugar
5 large eggs, separated
1/3 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1-1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
MILK SYRUP:
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
1 cup heavy (or whipping) cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbsp dark rum
GARNISHES:
Fresh whipped cream or good quality vanilla ice cream
Cocoa powder
Sliced fresh mango (or the fruit of your choice- tropical fruits pair nicely with this cake)
METHOD:
Preheat oven to 350oF. Generously butter a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.CAKE: Beat 3/4 cup sugar and the egg yolks until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Fold in the milk, vanilla, flour and baking powder.Beat the egg whites to soft peaks, adding the cream of tartar after 20 seconds. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup sugar and continue beating until the whites are glossy and firm, but not dry. Gently fold the whites into the yolk mixture. Pour this batter into the buttered baking dish.Bake the cake until it feels firm and an inserted toothpick comes out clean, about 30-45 minutes. Let the cake cool completely in baking dish. Pierce the cake all over with a fork, taking care to not tear it up.
MILK SYRUP: Combine the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, cream, vanilla and rum in a mixing bowl. Whisk until well blended. Pour the syrup over the cake, spooning the overflow back on top, until it is all absorbed.
When ready to serve, cut a slice and plate it. Top with a dollop of freshly whipped cream or a side of ice cream, dust cake and cream with some fresh cocoa powder and place a slice or two of fresh mango on the side. This cake is addictive- you've been warned! Enjoy!
Plank Salmon Grilling...Favorite Recipes, Suggestions?
I haven't tried this yet, but a friend told me to lay fresh basil on the plank, then the salmon, freshly ground black pepper, lemon slices, and more basil. I hope to try it this week.
Rhode Island- Do you have Ice Cream- Homemade
I LOVE the Ice Cream Machine! Their ice cream is the best.
Salad that is a big hit
The dressing sounds really good! Thanks for sharing your recipe.
I need the restaurant of a lifetime...both food and athmosphere
Another vote here for No. 9 Park. Fabulous food and drink and the service is outstanding.
