O Paparico in Porto - Has anyone actually been?

Thank you for the post. Obviously worth the try!

Lisbon Restaurant for 40th birthday

You are right, for dinner for 4 you could be closer to 500 Euros with proper matching wines. I misread your query and was thinking of a romantic "tête à tête"... Alma or Assinatura are not specially romantic, but better value for money and a more reliable cuisine! Alma probably best.
Tagide might be an option (nice view, very traditional old fashion Portuguese), but the food is just not on the same level. Personnally, I would go to Fortaleza do Guincho... but it's way out of town.

Lisbon Restaurant for 40th birthday

Have you thought of Tavares?

one night at Lisbon airport - any good eats nearby or worth a taxi ride?

That gives you plenty of time!
There are no hotels at Lisbon airport; So it does not really matter where you stay, you will have to taxi in any case. I generally use the Hotel Mercure near the Zoo (v. good value for money... ask for a room with a view of the aqueduct).
One great dinner, tricky answer. I would suggest the restaurant Panorama at the Sheraton (no, I am not being sarcastic...): Top class food (modern portuguese) and a fantastic view over Lisbon and the river. Ok, it's not the little typical Portuguese tasca.
For these, this post is still accurate http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/652075
In between, Assinatura & 100 Maneiras stick out. The new hotel Altis in Belem has a Michelin starred restaurant (very good) and might be an option, but it's really the other side of town from the airport... Tavares and Gambrinus, both in the centre have this old Lisbon traditional feelin, and very good food.
Well, hope that helps you, enjoy your night in Lisbon!

Lunch on the way to Andalusia

Glad you enjoyed it! and thank you for posting.

one night at Lisbon airport - any good eats nearby or worth a taxi ride?

The answer depends upon many factors... How late are you arriving and what time are you leaving the next day an essential one.
Also the choice of hotel depends more on your budget than any other consideration. Everything in Lisbon is within taxi range.
If you give us some more info, I will try to help...
BTW Portugal dines at British time, not Spanish time: Lunch 12:30-2pm, Dinner: 7:30 - 10pm.

Also, Portugal is one hour behind France and Spain timewise.

Kosher Food in Porto Portugal?

Cannot find any information about this. Try contactin the Israelite community of Lisbon through this website. They should be able to help.

I second Vela Latina, very nice old fashion restaurant, I go there regularly: http://velalatina.pt/english/
Assinatura would be a good place too, I did not know they had a private room.

O Paparico in Porto - Has anyone actually been?

I don't go too often to Porto, and it is mostly for meetings, so food is not of my chosing. However, I have been several times to Foz Velha, and like his style of cuisine. Pedro Lemos is considered tops at the moment, very good reputation. I have not heard of the others, sorry.

I also hear great things of the restaurant in the new hotel Yeatman the other side of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, it has now a Michelin star and the view is superb over the town. Try to go if only for a drink... http://www.the-yeatman-hotel.com/en/food/the-chef/

Tagide might fit the bill... Does not cost much to ask them:

Paris report Mar 12

I'll drink to that and to the Duke :o)

Paris report Mar 12

Parigi, I always read your posts with great pleasure.

No I was not thinking of Pouilly Fumé, different grape and région. But you win, the site you indicate mentions 2 reds out of 863 Pouilly Fuissé ... Strange they can use the appellation though.

I had never seen or heard of a red Pouilly Fuissé, but may be I have lived abroad too long.

O Paparico in Porto - Has anyone actually been?

I regret I have not been, and had the same feeling... But reading Portugueses comments on the restaurant, they are also very positive. So might be worth a try; I wil certainly go next time I am in Porto. The reports all say that bookings are advisable (always a good sign too!).
Please report if you go.

I thought all Pouilly Fuissé were white???

Foodie House Rental in September in... Switzerland? Northern Italy?

I prefer the Lago d'Iseo, slightly less know and therefore less touristy. Also home to L'Albereta...

food shopping in Lisbon

I am not very familiar with this area, but the answer is yes... You will be in the Chiado, slap in the centre of Lisbon, and the locals also have to eat.

One night in Lisbon

Never heard of either, sorry.

One night in Lisbon

The answers are yes & yes.

One night in Lisbon

Not knowing your tastes:
Breakfast at the Pasteleria de Belem
Lunch at Cervejaria Ramiro (shellfish only)
Dinner at the Panorama restaurant in the Sheraton.

Food and Fado

Look at http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/740992

Food and Fado

Fado and food do not mix...
And, no, you will not find Fado in the Alentejo. Their typical song is the "Cantar Alentejano" a very moving men's choir. There was a recent post about Fado in Lisbon on this board; You should be able to find it by using the search box (top right corner of this page)

Garlic shrimp in Lisbon, Cacais or Sintra and other questions

Now I understand. From Penha Longa it is a short ride to either (but not to Lisbon). You will find reviews of Sintra and Cascais if you put a search on this board (box at top right corner of this page). Fortaleza do Guincho in Cascais is superb (Michelin star), and also Porto de Santa Maria for fish and shellfish.

Your gambas are called Gambas Ajillo, A Gilo or any variation o the spelling (deformation of the Spanish name as the dish is of Spanish origin). Fresh, it depends where... Gambrinus should have them.
If seafood is not in season, it won't be on restaurant's menus in Lisbon... Ameijoas (clams), buzios (murex) berbigão 8cockles), sapateira (crab), Santola (spider crab). About gambas and camarões the bigger it is, the more likely it is it comes from Mozambique...
You should try a cozido a Portuguesa at least once in your life.
Not sure if you appreciate the distances between Cascais, Sintra and Lisbonne...

Portugal wine regions - Duoro

Driving from the Algarve to the Douro region is a full day drive, so you might contemplate taking the train to Porto and renting a car there.

The Vintage hotel in Pinhão is a good base for exploring the Quintas and they can organise the visits. But Easter week-end certainly not the easiest time. http://www.csvintagehouse.com/

You can always contact them and ask what they suggest...

Also, note that the region is spelt DOURO in case you want to do a search on this board or elsewhere.

Portugal, Prague, Vienna & Budapest on a budget

For Portugal: You might want to look at the Spain/Portugal board (or even post to it with some details of where you will be staying (assume it is a stop-over in Lisbon?).

Tour d'Argent Paris

ChefJune: Maybe you should try the restaurant, and judge for yourself. The lunch menu is only 65 Euros... I don't think it's fair to criticise on old reviews, when there is a new chef and management.

Tour d'Argent Paris

If you go for the lunch menu it does not have to break the bank. I consider it as a unique experience, to repeat it or not is your choice but at least try it once!
There were no business people on accounts last time I went, just normal people, mostly tourists of various nationalities, including and mostly French. Like the Jules Verne, La Tour d'Argent seems to suffer from it's location and view which translates for some as "to avoid automatically " ... I have had very pleasant meals and remarkable service at both restaurants.

Lunch on the way to Andalusia

La Guita is a very good Manzanilla if you can find it (I only buy in 1/2 bottles as, like Jerez, it does not keep well once open). Also try a Pedro Ximenes at the other end of the spectrum (very sweet, a mouthfull of grapes).
