Bakery or breakfast near Parc La Fontaine

Kouig Aman on Mont-Royal near Hotel de Ville has the most amazing croissants...
As for coffee you can try Cafe Neve on Rachel.

Enjoy!

MOVING: WHERE DO I GO TO FIND BEAUTIFUL CUTLERY AND PORCELAIN DISHES FOR EVERYDAY USE. WANT MODERN/SIMPLE (white)/ AND HIGH QUALITY.

3 Femmes et 1 coussin is a beautiful store on Marie-Anne.

http://www.3f1c.ca/

The selection in-store is limited, but you they have additional items that you can order...

Where to eat besides Au Pied?

If food is your priority then I would skip L'Express....
I would recommend any of the bistros that Carswell mentioned above, especially Au Cinquieme Péché..
Laloux is great but a touch more expense then some of the other places mentioned

Where can I get a good pizza stone in Mtl?

I bought an All-Clad pizza stone from Les Touilleurs a couple of years ago and we're very happy with it...

What's good -- and open -- on Mondays?

I most certainly agree with Europea....I believe that Graziella is also open on Monday's (for upscale Italian)

Restaurant Closures - 2008

Perhaps this was mentioned in another post but I just read that Montée de Lait is relocating on Bishop st. and will now be called Montée.....
Apparently this is a much bigger space, but I rather liked the fact that it was small and quaint, that was part of the charm and experience of going there..... Will have to check out the new space, anyone know when it's supposed to open?

Visiting in January

Despite the many warnings about the Chicago winters, I’ll be visiting in January and need some resto recommendations.
I know this is way ahead of time, but it gives me something to look forward to!!

4 lunches
4 dinners

I’m thinking Friday night dinner at Mercat a la Planxa, Saturday night at Alinea as for Sunday and Monday, I need some help.

I need recommendations for Thai or sushi restaurant for one of our dinners and the last night I’m open to any suggestions…we’re not picky eaters anything goes!

Lunch, I'm thinking Hot Doug’s, Lou Malnati’s for pizza (unless someone has something better to suggest), I would also love to try a Mexican restaurant for one of the lunches

Are there any wine bars where the kitchen is open late to go grab a drink and some tapas style food? (I found Cru on the internet…any good?)

We’ll be staying at the James but don’t mind travelling by cab for a good meal

Thanks!

Restaurant Openings - 2008

Laurent Godbout is opening yet another resto on St.Denis (3609) called La Fabrique....bistro style

Restaurant Closures - 2008

Montreal info is also reporting that L'Atelier (on st.laurent) will be changing owners and "vocation" by the end of September...too bad, I liked that place

Pre-made pizza dough in Montreal?

You can pick some up at Pain Doré

Looking for the "Best table d'hote deals..." thread

Ferreira also has a 2 course table d'hote at $24 after 10pm.

Looking for good mediterranean for father's day!

There's also Ouzeri on St.Denis which has decent Greek food. Not overly expensive, I believe it would suit your budget, do keep in mind that it's very loud and boisterous especially on week-ends.

Best stimmés/steamies?

Decarie Hot Dog!

Monday dinner.

Cocagne is also open on Mondays, bot a BYOB but it seems to fit your criteria and they do have a $42 menu which offers entree, main & desert...

Les Enfants Terribles?

I was there for bruch on Sunday...

The space which was previously Vasco de Gama has been renovated and it looks great! I really liked the atmosphere and the decor...

I didnt have the best experience as far as the service was concerned...To make a long story short, somebody got my order wrong, I had to send it back by the time it came back my boyfriend was already done with his eggs benedict so we basically took turns eating.
His eggs benedict were not great, the hollandaise sauce was REALLY thick...My omelette was OK, not the best I've had waaaaay too much cheese, so much so that I cant remember what else was supposed to be in there :(

All this being said, they are fairly new and I would perhaps give it another chance because I LOVED what they've done with the space....maybe for diner next time.

Late night eats

Other wine bars opened late where you can get some food:
There's also BU which loses at 1am as well as Pullman (not sure what time they close, probably around 1ish I would say).

L'Inconnu

In a previous post I mentioned that I would report back on a group dinner at L’Inconnu.
This was a set menu as we were 45 people for a bday party…
The place itself is very nice, lacks a bit of color for my taste but for those who like “décor minimaliste” it really works.

I had the sweetbreads as an entrée and although I’m always reluctant to order them as I’m quite peculiar about the way they’re done, these were delicious. They were served with roasted mushrooms and what I was told was a balsamic butter.

My main course was a filet beef which was cooked to perfection and a nice red wine sauce, simple and delicious. I can’t quite remember the veggie accompaniment; however the meat was the highlight.

My boyfriend ordered the ravioli stuffed with duck and foie gras, I had a taste of these and almost regretted not having ordered this dish..

As for desert we didn’t get to try any because my friend ordered a cake which they served….The cake was a pièce montée from Patisserie Nancy (I believe that’s in NDG??) and this was quite a treat. Almost as good as the “choux” I’ve had in France!

Don’t know what the service is like on a regular night, but considering we were a large group (and quite rowdy! J ) the waitresses were quite accommodating.

Indian and Mediterranean Restaurants

My favorite resto for seafood is Ferreira. And at the risk of sounding very repetitive, Pied de Cochon serves a great seafood platter in the summer!
As for Indian, I agree that Parc Ex has the largest selection of great Indian restos and they are definetely very reasonably priced.

Vertige

Thanks Mick...
Carswell is absolutely right, this resto doesn't get a lot of mention and it's unfortunate as the food is delicious.
It has been quite some time since I was there, but I did enjoy it, the decor is very warm and I remember the staff being super nice!

Anyone know a good indian grocery store in Montreal?

I quite like the one on Ontario just east of St.Laurent...the name escapes me....the owner is super nice and helpful
it's driving me crazy that I cant remember the name.......anyone????

Near the Bell Centre

Brasserie Brunoise is across the street from the Bell Centre....perfect place for
pre-game meal.
Check out their website: www.brunoise.ca

Terraces; the good, the bad, the food, the drinks...

Joe Beef will have a 20 person non-smoking (yay!!!) terrasse

Where to find best chorizo in Montreal?

How about Librairie Espagnole?

Group dinner, 40-50, during Grand Prix weekend

You should check out Pop bar à vin, (Pine), a few years ago we had our Christmas party there, group of 35 and had a great time. We had a set menu & it was delicious and no glitches with the service it was excellent and is very close to your hotel.

Also, a friend of mine is having her dad's bday party at L'inconnu (St.Andre) group of 50 and they will accomodate with a set menu. I havent been there so I cannot vouch for it but will report back.

As for BYOW, I've been to an event at La Colombe (Duluth) with a group of 45 or so, the service was great and so was the food however the space downstairs cannot accomodate this many and we we're upstairs and the ambiance lacked a little.

That being said, it is GP week-end so I would call way ahead of time to see if they would be willing to close for such a large group.

favorite desserts

Pot-de-crème au chocolat, caramel et sel de Maldon at Laloux

Terraces; the good, the bad, the food, the drinks...

Version Laurent Godbout has a beautiful terrasse, gorgeous decor, very comfortable seating and off course the food is great

Casual dinner near Sofitel?

There's also Restaurant Europea which is a short walk away. I have never been but have heard good things

Anyone been to Restaurant Julien?

I've never been there for dinner, have been there for lunch a few years ago (it's a popular spot amongst the business crowd at lunch time)...
The food is good but the decor is a little "stuffy" (atleast for my taste).
I recently read that the owners have opened a new lounge serving tapas called the Phillip's Lounge, looks nice...www.phillipslounge.com

three plateau restos

agree with riboflavinjoe that the food is excellent at 5e peche, also a nice selection of wines by the glass....It is definetely on the loud side given the small space.
I have not been to Bienville but have great comments from friends and I believe L'Inconnue is the old Brunoise location which I have not tried yet but got a good review in voir....

Cocagne

New to the board, stumbled upon it while looking for a place to eat on a Sunday evening. We ended up at Cocagne and wanted to share my experience. The food was very tasty. I had 40$ menu (entrée. Main, desert) opted for the cured ham ravioli entrée which was excellent and the cerf Boileau as a main, also very tasty, although the accompanying potatoes were undercooked (bordering on raw!).

Later in the evening the chef made an appearance in the dining room and went from table to table to speak to patrons……every single table was paid a visit but ours!!! I found that to be very odd and almost insulting…..Don’t know if he was turned off by the fact that we were speaking English (I should certainly hope not, as we’re both perfectly bilingual), but IMO if you’re going to check on ALL of the tables none should be excluded….

Although the food was quite good and the atmosphere very cozy this detail really turned us off (perhaps an extreme reaction on our part, but it was nevertheless bothersome)
