porchetta in/around providence

since i have recently learned what real porchetta consists of (skin!), i am wondering if any place around providence makes it from scratch? i know venda and roma do not, i live on the hill...

Ceviche in RI

POB has it as a special from time to time. i'm sure they would make it for you if you asked ahead.

Ceviche in RI

the menu on the website is not up to date. there are many seafood options now!

Banh MI - Providence

asian bakery is very much up and running, open during the day (till 6ish?) during the week and saturdays that i know of.

Ceviche in RI

i was going to make the same suggestion. though i've not had it myself, everyone raves about the ceviche at los andes. it is on the regular menu now as both an appetizer and entree option. i always enjoy the unique experiences i have dining at los andes!

Best Seafood Dishes in RI?

great topic! i love providence oyster bar on federal hill and am a big fan of their food in general, but one of their dishes is stellar and creative enough to be noteworthy. they do a salad of bacon wrapped sea scallops over baby spinach with warm fried goat cheese, a warm maple bacon vinaigrette and it's topped with a poached egg. it's been on the menu since they opened and it just might qualify as "the perfect bite"!

PVD/RI * October * Open/Closed/Coming Soon

the dorrance is now open (formerly federal reserve). the inside is as beautiful as ever but now open to the public. their facebook page has the menu.

August Opening, Closing, and Coming Soon in PVD/RI

jacky's waterplace, the flagship restaurant by the owner of jacky's galaxies in bristol, cumberland, and north providence, is now open with an amazing view of the river and downtown.

Lunch in Providence

oh, you're in luck! the liberty elm diner is @ 200 yards from the 95 elmwood ave exit and serves up the best pancakes in town and everything else fresh and locally sourced under the sun. it's a super fun atmosphere and kids will be awed by the giant orange juicing machine! i know i am. the menu is solid, but the daily specials are abundant and awesome.

new rivers, providence

stopped in for an after-shopping bite w/ mom. i've been wanting to try their new charcuterie & offal offerings. i had a glass of rose, mom had a vouvray- both were winners, esp the vouvray. bright & crisp, balanced sweetness, summer in a glass! we chose the pork and garlic sausage, lardo, and tasso. all three were impeccably done. i'm not super familiar with tasso, but this one was made from the shoulder and it was so tender i was in awe. the pork sausage was exploding with clean garlic and pork flavors and the lardo, well, it's pork butter! it was presented on large batons of toasted brioche style bread which was not too sweet but soaked up the fatty goodness quite well. the other dishes we ordered were part of an extensive selection of "nibbles" which included lamb sweetbreads and a variety of fresh locally sourced vegetables. we chose four town farms broccoli with garlic, and roasted baby squashes which were served with a light aioli and fresh marjoram or oregano, not sure but they were delicious and the perfect accompaniment to the rich meats. in a city with a short attention span, bruce and beau seem to have their fingers on the pulse of its diners. only with skill and integrity such as theirs can a landmark restaurant embrace change and successfully reflect it on their menu without losing sight of where they strive to be. cheers to that!

Sea Swirl...what happened to your fried clams??

deep fried rubber bands

What's delicious, local, and cheap in Providence?

the red bridge tavern in east providence serves excellent seafood as well as some of the locally beloved portugese-american favorites. DO NOT MISS their stuffed quahog clams, a true symbol of RI!

Best Burger in Providence??

ooh! i've heard great things about that place here on ch, in fall river, right? sounds like a fun addition...

Al Forno in Providence

i feel remiss in not having chimed in on these al forno posts before, but i would encourage anyone who is thinking of going there to think about trying bacaro instead. i think the menu more current and exciting, and the quality is just as good as i've had at al forno.

Sea Swirl...what happened to your fried clams??

excellent info guys! i was so spoiled by growing up on the south shore, vacationing in NH & ME, and eventually learning to fry the beauties myself at my first job at Phoebe's in seekonk, i rarely even bother ordering fried clams anymore. you have inspired me to bust out the dutch oven, open a cold beer, and show my NJ native chef hubby how it's done! cheers!

Best Fresh Fish Source in RI?

this might be hard for people to believe but after years of fruitless frustrating searches, i discovered that the seafood dept at my local dave's marketplace (cumberland) was by far the best i've found in northern ri. of course, you have to shop smart but i feel that's true of any place. the fish is always fresh and high quality and the prices are on point. give them a try, the EG store is amazing too.

amici bar & grille; providence review (stupid long)

went for a light dinner early, @ 6:00 on a tuesday. quite a few tables were occupied as well as cocktail hour bar folks. atmosphere is typical federal hill, trying too hard to be NYC or something, service was passable..servers chowing down on cold pizza at bar service station is gross IMO. the food was excellent. DH & i shared surf & turf carpaccio for 1st course- beautifully presented w/ arugula, caperberries, wonton crisps ("medditerasian") and the star of the dish, kalamata & pistachio tapenade. i spotted shiso leaves elswhere on the app menu, so i requested a couple w/ the arugula and our server had no idea what i was talking about, but eventually accommodated me. we then shared the pork alentejana entree which is a traditional portugese stew of pork (what i'm familiar with as "blade meat", but that's another thread altogether), clams, potatoes, and chorico in a spicy and garlicky sauce. this is perhaps one of the most deftly prepared dishes i've had of late. what i would have been ok with is the homey version of this dish i've always had- greasy, spicy, pork-fatty and gut busting. what i enjoyed was a respectfully elevated and refined interpretation with lean but meltingly tender pork bits, perfectly steamed littlenecks and broth soaked potatoes. it was lovely. we honestly probably won't be back in for dinner anytime soon. the cocktail menu is amateurish at best, wines "by-the-glass" are non-descript, and the service is not at the level i expect at the menu's price point, but i can definitely see some serious i'm-not-turning-the-oven-on takeout over the summer!

The Elusive Pizza Strip

my favorite strips (and i am a reluctant fan) are from pauly penta's. the tomato topping is thick, sweet, and olive-oily. i usually go for a corner.

Foodies Coming to Denver . . . What to do and Eat?

wow this is super helpful and good timing, i'll be there in two weeks! coming from the culinary hot spot of providence, RI, i've learned to keep my expectations lower when travelling, but many of the aforementioned suggestions have garnered high acclaim.
i would also like to do some cooking for my hosts, if any suggestions can be offered as to where i should seek out great local beef, bison, lamb, etc?

Banh MI - Providence

yep, asian bakery is definitely open! they don't keep late hours and are closed on sunday, i think? maybe another day as well, but the place was busy again today when i stopped in!

Where can we take hungry URI students out for a decent meal?

totally, if you allow time to wait 15-30 min. and trust me, it's worth it!

Where can we take hungry URI students out for a decent meal?

heartily second fez & rancho, but door to door you're talkin 35-40 min at least to provy. i thought of matunuck oyster bar, it's def a great spot, if not terribly hip :) awesome food & dollar oysters at happy hour!

Banh MI - Providence

hmm...i had a sandwich from the asian bakery last week, and the place was a bustle with friends & family cooking and eating.

Where can we take hungry URI students out for a decent meal?

sounds like you might like crazy burger in narragansett, but they are probably familiar w/ it already.

Weekend in Warwick\Providence RI

you should be ok for that weekend!

Foods unique to Rhode Island

lol don't lose heart menton1, we're out here! i didn't respond initially because personally i find the stuff unappealing, but my mother (who grew up in quincy, MA) loves it and i remember her delight when i first brought it home years ago after stumbling upon it on gregg's menu. it is indeed a fine specimen of the humble dessert that i remember not only from the thanksgiving tables of my childhood, but also little spots we'd stop at along the roads of new hampshire when vacationing "up country". :)

Providence - decent place for a group near the Convention Center

"Some people get into the details of the food - the texture, how well it is cooked, the layers of flavors. But not everyone really enjoys that. I think for some people it less about the distinction of the food, than it is about sustenance. Who's right?"

i for one take exception to this kind of language on this site. i am not simply "into" food, it is my passion and my livelihood. chowhound is a safe place i can go to, AWAY from the mall to find like-minded folks with whom, while i may not always agree, i can still engage in informed discourse. i don't go to the Gap and question your lifestyle...

Casual/swanky dining in/near Providence

2nd the fez! there are hipsters but they're not pretentious and everyone is treated nicely. one of my all time providence favs.

Providence - decent place for a group near the Convention Center

i don't mean to nit-pick but i feel it's important to let people coming into town know that all valet parking on federal hill is free. that's always been one of my favorite features of providence dining, although some corporate places like flemings are now charging for it.
