Are there any opinions on this place? There is a coupon offer which I was considering but really wanted some feedback if it woild be worth it?

Christmas girls night out

Are there any good culinary experiences for a night out? 5 women. We had thought of the Death by Chocolate at the Paliser but it doesn't run during December.

Thanks!

Mothers Day meal/food to go

I am trying to figure out where to send someone to pick up a meal/ food for a Mothers Day late lunch/early supper.

I thought that there was a catering place in the Farmer's market, but I can't see it on the website, Is it gone? If it is still there, are there any recomendations?

I have found references to Red Tree, Main Dish and Forage? Are any better than the others?

The person who is picking up the food, on Saturday to bring on Sunday (we are not in Calgary, but in Crossfield) needs SPECIFICS, so if anyone has any suggestions of what is good from these places that would be great as well.

She didn't want to go to a restaraunt, so I am trying to make this work... I was hoping for a full meal, but I don't know if that would work for the time of day.

Thank you for your help. My brain is dealing with new baby stuff, rather than coordinating a meal (a restaraunt would have been so much easier....)

Vegetarian Freezer meals for after having baby

Yes, I have a crockpot, and two pretty good crockpot recipe books that I do use frequently.

I am wanting some things in the freezer because I also have a 15 month old, and while the crockpot is handy, and will be used, I think I will need some meals that need NO prep, for those days when he doesn't give me a moment to chop or sautee.

Along the lines of the question above, what else can I stock my freezer with. I am thinking basic frozen veggies, beans, grated cheese, chopped onions (have never done this, and don't know if it is worth losing the freshness?).

Any other suggestions so that I can make some easy meals with things on hand?

Vegetarian Freezer meals for after having baby

obviously I am not that great at searching, thanks!

Vegetarian Freezer meals for after having baby

I tried a quick search and didn't find any threads related to this. Also, when I searched for freezer meals on google most are meat centric, and I never know what or who to trust. The cookbooks that I have don't have much to say about freezing.

I am due the middle of March and want to have a few things prepared ahead of time, because I know there will be nights when we just can't get to anything healthy and I don't want to fall into the trap or ordering pizza, etc.

Hopefully someone will have some tried and enjoyed recipes that will work? We do eat dairy and eggs, so it is not super strict.

Thanks ahead of time!

Japanese for Christmas Eve.

Thank you. I hadn't checked the hours yet of these two choices.

Japanese for Christmas Eve.

We are going to order take out from a restaurant for Christmas eve and make a few things at home. I don't often order out for a crowd (or cook for one) so one question I have is how much to order. I am feeding four adults. I am making miso soup, salad, gyoza, noodles and edamame at home.

My main question is where to order from...???

Here's the plan: My husband and MIL are visiting a relative in a care facility tomorrow afternoon (5927 Bowness Rd). After this they will pick up the food and drive out to our home (outside of the city, Didsbury). They can take any convenient route out of town.

I want good food but MIL and my dad are not foodies and I am pregnant, therefore I am not eating (much) raw, so the fish doesn't have to be knockout quality. Also, my MIL has offered to pay and so I don't want to go for crazy prices.

The sushi threads are getting a bit older, but I was considering Sushi Club or Shikiji. Any opinions on those two?

Any better options?

Is it safest to stick with rolls and sushi (for those that can eat it)? I am a sucker for tempura, but in my heart I know it would not be good 3 hours later?

Thank you for advice, this is my first hosting duty (I also have Christmas day for eight), and my pregnant brain (with a 1 year old) appreciates it!!

Happy holidays!

Baby's 1st birthday cake

Much like a recent request, this seems easy but I as well am looking for specific recipes (mostly because I don't have time to search all over the internet for what COULD be a good recipe)...

I want a recipe using natural sugars...maple syrup, something like that.

I would like to use some fruit or veggie puree as well...pumpkin, etc.

I think I am going to stay away from chocolate...maybe in the frosting?

Because it is a first birthday I want a traditional cake (there will be many the camera taking pictures).

I can bake well enough, but am not an expert, nor do I want to/have time to slave for days over it.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Organic produce in Airdrie?

Is there anywhere?

Cooking Classes in Vancouver

Thanks for the reply:

First one: all booked
picachef: none in novembber (she moves there Nov 1)
dirty apron: definitely considering...

Any other suggestions? Are you familiar with Quince at all? It came up on Google when I searched.

Cooking Classes in Vancouver

My sister is moving to Vancouver and I am looking for a birthday present for her. As far as I can understand (without knowing Vancouver too well) she is moving quite close to downtown, in the West End (got that name off google maps).

She loves to cook so I thought that might be something she could do to introduce her to the new city.

If anyone has any suggestions of where to look I would really appreciate. I am kindof under the gun at this point.

Calgary - Heritage Park Harvest Sale

Completely different than the farmers market. Very cheap, but not necessary great produce. I bought a flat of strawberries for 5$ but they were meant to be used as jam/freezer strawberries. This is a great place to go for people who want to do canning.

It was super busy though. People wait in line from 6:00am on!

Kelowna Restaurants

Enjoyed The Wild Apple the one time I went there.

Blush Lane is fantastic (Cgy)

I don't believe that there have been very many places that have beat the service we have received from the cheese dept. at Blush Lane, on four different locations. Full of information, does nit rush. We are trying to explore the cheese world, but our Janice Beaton experiences (service primarily) were lacking.

I have been meaning to post about it. So glad to hear that others are enjoying it. The produce beats PO and Community for sure. Amaranth produce is nice but I like that Blush Lane is sourcing from its own farms. Even further assurance of quality and organic I would think.

Pincher Creek

I have to stay here for ten days for work. Are there any gems or any places to flat out avoid?

Baklava in Calgary

I love this place, so tasty!

AnJu Calgary

We are going to try Korean for the first time this week. My question about this place is: we have a 6 month old, is there space for him? By cool space, do you mean meant for adults only? He doesn't eat yet, and can just sit on our lap, but would this be a great choice?

The other place we were considering was Seoul

No time to search...restaurant rec.

Have looked at the menus (while baby naps) and so far I am liking Europea and Ferreira, but still have a few days for suggestions.

One more question: My MIL's price for babysitting is dessert, where should we go for that?

Kingston, ON

We are visiting for a week. After looking on the boards we went to Wooden Heads last night. It was good but didn't WOW me. We have time for one more dinner out (MIL is watching the baby), and are considering Royal Angkhor. Is this a good choice? Are there others?

No time to search...restaurant rec.

My husband and I are going to visit Montreal for two days while visiting my mother-in-law with our six month old. I give that introduction so that people might understand that this meal out in Montreal will be the first and last (peaceful) meal out in awhile.

We were in Montreal three years ago and went to Club Chasse et Peche and LOVED it. We are looking for the same sortof experience.

Things to consider:
1. We are staying at the Delta Centre-ville
2. My husband eats fish and seafood but no other meat
3. I am breastfeeding so alcohol availibility/wine list is not a factor
4. It is next week so we have to be able to get a table. Not restaurants this won't be a problem I don't think because we prefer to eat early.

Thanks ahead of time for the suggestions. In the past I would have spent hours combing through the boards, making food plans for the trip but don't have that much luxurious time anymore!

Nectar Desserts in Calgary

I felt quite the same about Nectar. I had waited and waited for an opportunity to go (it took near to a year). We went after dinner at Capo and after that dinner I was so underwhelmed...
I had a bread pudding dish which was dry, with a small amount of chai ice cream, there was not enough that you could have a taste of ice cream with each bite of bread pudding. My hot chocolate was cold. My husband had the chocolate pate, while everything tasted good on this dessert the chocolate was rock hard, not at all spreadable, and I think he left half of it in the pot because the knife they give did not work. I hesitated telling people how I felt because I had hyped it up so much in my mind.

So it just wasn't quite right. And while good food would make up for other things...our table was wobbly and tiny and the chair placement (which you cannot move) was uncomfortable. I am obviously pregnant (8 months) and the table that the placed us at was very difficult for me to sit at. We went to celebrate the start of my maternity leave, and it was a downer for the end of the night!

new ladybug open?

Is the new ladybug bakery open yet? Any idea on a date?

river cafe, still one of the best?

Well I went on Friday. The food was good, but the experience was disappointing because of the service. Our entrees were delayed at least a half an hour, while the tables all around us got served. Our server did not notify us of anything amiss until most of that time had gone by. When our food did arrive it was put down in front of us without a word, perhaps this is just my preference but since I ordered over an hour ago, in this case almost two, I may not remember everything that is on my plate. Also on our way out the hostess was too busy chatting to get our jackets so we had to fish them out ourselves. There are restaurants where fantastic service is not expected but I did not think that the River Cafe would be one of them.

Capo reservations

If I can't get reservations is it worth going on the offchance that they will have a table for two?

forage - calgary

Is this restaurant good food or just better than average take home food? Comparable with Red Tree, Sunterras, Safeway?

river cafe, still one of the best?

I have only been here once a few years ago. Having recently moved back to the city I have decided to go here. I am coming from Toronto, where I ate of a few of the top reviewed restaurants there. Is it worth it? Or will I get a better food experience elsewhere for a lower price?

Menu challenge - who can help?

So I don't necessarily have the time (working a lot) or the experience to come up with this on my own so I was really hoping that someone might have fun planning a weeks worth of meals for me, actually only three nights! Seems easy, and even after I list the limitations I am sure it will be for others, I just can't think right now.

My husband has been working away for three and a half weeks. When he comes home it will be our year and a half anniversary ( I know, young love, how sappy). I want to have everything ready for when he gets here so that I wow him with the food (working in a small town with a Canadian-Chinese restaurant, a gas station/truck stop restaurant, and Subway for lunch every day).

1. Pesco-Vegetarian: meaning that we eat fish, drink milk, just don't eat the other meats (silly I know, but he's been doing it for 13 years)
2. No alcohol
3. Easy to make ( I work a lot of hours and I want to be able to do the cooking when I get home after work). Even better would be things that I can prepare this weekend to have ready and waiting.
4. We are living on a student budget. Meaning splurging for a few great ingredients is fine, but every ingredient can't break the bank
5. No real dislikes
6. We are trying to be quite healthy lately, so much like the $ issue, a few dishes can be blow your mind good but loaded with things that are not necessarily good for you - but would like to stay mostly on the lean side.

I think that is it. If anyone would like to help I would really appreciate it, my old standards not going to cut it for the wow factor that I want.

Kid Friendly restaurant in Downtown Calgary

I am a nanny and I am taking my charges downtown on the train, to the devonian gardens and then we will have dinner. The train ride is the thrilling part for them! We usually do this in the morning and have lunch (often at the Sunterra marktplace or in McNally Robinson), so I have no idea where a great place for dinner would be.

1.Do not want to walk far
2. The kids are 5 and 19 months
3. Do not want to be there for a really long time (under an hour)

Thanks

Entertainment book restaurants - Calgary

We are new to the city and thinking it would be a good way to explore the city (at better prices) we purchased the entertainment book. I flipped through the dining section and did not recognize many of the places. Are there any standout places in the book? Are any of them worth going to? Are there some that are really worth avoiding?
