My SO and I will be moving downtown from Mississauga end of May to the Wellington/University area. Looking for suggestions on great places to eat and shop. We enjoy a wide range of cuisines from cheap and cheerful to more elaborate. Any and all advise welcome.
We are especially looking for Pho and Chinese without a long walk if possible.

Niagara-on-the-Lake. 3 great dinners?
I will preface that this might sound strange however my SO and I have been frequenting NOTL for the past 10 years. We come by boat and stay at the yacht club at lease 3 times a year. My most favourite place to eat is the Angle Inn. It is old, haunted and pub food but great food for a relaxed dinner. My next recommendation is the Queen's Landing either Bar or dining room area. Again good food, good service and very enjoyable

It has been a very long time since I lived in Guelph however we do make it out there a couple times of year and head to Wok's Taste for chinese. Very good.
Mississauga
I wanted to revitalize this thread as I am looking for a great steak meal in Mississauga. Have been to La Castille which is great but pricey and also Aristotle's but wondering is there is any others out there.
Oyster knife?
I purchased mine at the Tsukiji market approx 2 hours prior to the earthquake last year. It is a great knife. In addition to T&T you can get boxes of oysters at loblaws of all places. Again check the dates. I will certainly be checking out the ones at T&T to compare.

There is a Cuban Bakery between Cathraw and Dixie called Antojitos which has great cassava bread, great coffee and empanadas.
Washing Dishes & Latex Gloves
I have lived with eczema for years. I am also allergic to all synthetics so gloves do more harm than good having said that I find that having cold wet hands - think sailing- is worse than washing dishes. I do wash dishes but find if i use certain soaps I am ok - provided I moisturize afterwards. Williams Sonoma sell really nice gloves that last at least a year. I use these when doing large wash ups with many pots, china that can't go in the dishwasher or stem ware and I find I make out ok.
What to drink while eating raw oysters
I feel anything goes with the oysters as it is all about the oysters! I have had a light cold white wine, gin and vodka martini's and even beer - but it is all about the oysters.
What happened to Lino's on Lakeshore in Mississauga?
Driving along Lakeshore this evening and notices that Lino's has brown paper on the windows and a different awning with no name. Anyone know what happened? I was fond of their veggie sandwiches however usually only ordered them on summer weekends.

What Happened To Big Bowl in Mississauga?
Big Bowl Has Now Re-Opened!! Stopped in tonight and had a lovely bowl of PHO. There are new support beam, new windows, new flooring and new counters/bar. Apparently the person who drove into the restaurant drove far enough to hit the counter with the register. Glad they are open!
Awesome Friends With Food Sensitivities
My SO has food allergies however we never share them - he simply chooses other options. A funny situation - In my profession I was reviewing applications for long term care. I had an application that noted an allergy to soup. I called the referring organization and questioned it however was told point blank the client had an allergy to soup. Despite much conversation they didn't sway on their diagnosis. Crazy.
3 Day Sailboat Race Menu Needed
My boat and I will be racing in the Lake Ontario 300 race which is 300 nautical miles around Lake Ontario. I need a menu for the race to feed 7 crew that can be simply shoved into the oven if we are in poor conditions or just served cold if really bad conditions. The dishes need to be savoury and filling. I called June 1st to see if they were open however no answer so we didn't go. Called today and the new answering machine message states they are opening June 9th.

Is this bacon safe to eat?
Without sending it to a lab it is hard to say however bacon is usually cured and was likely cold enough for the length of time needed. I would give it the sniff test, make sure it was cooked through and don't serve to infants, pregnant women, elderly, or people with immune system deficiencies.
Do people seriously like Mandarin?
Mandarin is not my go to place for usual dining out however it does serve a purpose. There are times when a group wants buffet for various reasons: large diverse groups or my family, happen to be in the area and have a bizarre craving for buffet - one price and you can taste 100 different things - whatever. It is what it is. Is it a fresh, multi choice buffet that will please a number of people - yes. If you are looking for anything else - don't go.

How will turnips behave in crockpot?
I have put both the small turnips and large ones. I found that the smaller ones which I think were younger do fall apart however the large turnip cut into pieces did not.
Cooking Habits You Are Trying To Break...
I don't know if this is considered a bad habit but it is certainly an obsession. I have to empty the dishwasher (if clean), put away any dirty dishes (usually a glass and bowl from hubby from the night before) and put away the clean dishes in the dish rack all before I start cooking a meal. My hubby thinks I have OCD but there must be a good reason for this ....right? :)
What are your favorite non-traditional birthday cake ideas?
Growing up I never liked a sweet cake (still don't) so there might be birthday cake for guests there was always something else for me. Sometimes it was angle food cake with whipped cream, sometimes a jello cake with whipped cream and once I remember strawberry tarts. Now I prefer to have chinese cake (SO is chinese) and even had it as a wedding cake. It is light white almost sponge cake with fruit and whipped cream between the layers and on top. Very light and tasty.

Went to Big Bowl on Dundas in Mississauga for some Pho and OH NO its closed "due to renovations". However two windows were boarded up top to bottom and it looked like someone had possibly backed their car into the building. Anyone know what happened?

Assemble them? I probably don't understand but they do come whole. I don't exactly remember what they cost at Ikea but $14 rings a bell. They only have them at certain times of the year - I believe spring so right now. Let me know if you find them and I will follow up as well. You can also pick up their really fancy plastic bibs.

Only if it is a celebratory lunch - however I work in health care so different.
Charged For Things In Restaurants That Other Restaurants Give You Gratis
Two examples. 1. Satellite Restaurant in Clarkson. Ordered a burger. got one diameter sliced piece of pickle. Asked for extra but hold the lettuce and onion and was told that each subsequent slice was 25cents. I complained and was told if they didn't charge then EVERYONE would want more pickles and they would go out of business.
2. Recent trip to China they put a small dish of peanuts on the table in most restaurants. Doesn't matter if you eat them - you still get charged. They were tasty so you ate them.

Memphis Fire Barbeque Company - Stoneycreek
The Memphis Fire BBQ Company is a relatively new restaurant in the Stoneycreek area. We went last night after receiving a recommendation and really enjoyed it. Had pulled pork sandwiches, brisket and smoked chicken wings. Everything was tasty, service prompt and friendly and the prizes very reasonable. 1 appetizer, 2 meals and 3 beers was less than $50. Will be going back soon.

cleaning turkey soup
I find turkey broth darker than chicken however straining the broth threw double cheesecloth really helps make the broth clearer. Also keeping yellow skins on onions gives off a nicer more golden broth colour.

Some of my most favorite protein are inexpensive cuts of meat. Today I made a discovery - after purchasing pork neck bones and beef shanks from local chain grocery stores I went to my local butcher as there were no shanks at grocery store and got some for FREE. I almost fell over. Roasted them up and had marrow on toast. Also enjoy gizzards and liver.
