A restaurant in area of Penn's campus on a Sunday afternoon
I was going to recommend Biba but they don't open until 4. How about City Tap House at 39th & Walnut? I was there a year ago and it was good, so if that's changed I'll let the other Chowhounders chime in.
New Chinese Cherry Hill - Hong Kong Fusion
I went to this restaurant in January 2011 and it was great. Flash forward January 2012 and not good at all. Mediocre service, food, and atmosphere. What a difference a year makes. Agreed - not sure why/how they are still in business.
OO Flour
If you aren't in a rush you can order from King Arthur Flour (www.kingarthurflour.com). They call it Italian Flour. I love it.
Excellent Dinner at Vedge
I had dinner tonight with my ex-husband at Vedge (1221 Locust Street /
http://www.vedgerestaurant.com). This is the new vegan restaurant opened by the owners of the former Horizons in Bella Vista. I had been a frequent diner at Horizons so I was eager to try the new place.
I should mention that I am a weekday vegetarian so yes, I do enjoy a good steak now and then. The food at Vedge did not disappoint. The menu consists of small plates with an accompanying "Dirt" menu that highlights seasonal vegetables. We split the following:
Grilled Brussels sprouts in a smoked mustard sauce (amazing - I could eat a bucket of these)
Honshimeji soup (a vegetable soup that had wonderful vibrant flavors)
Daikon winter rolls with lemon grass tofu & asparagus with a sriracha sauce (fresh flavors that really complemented each other)
Braciole with smoked eggplant & cauliflower - served with fresh garbanzos & salsa verde (beautiful to look at and savory)
Grilled seitan with black lentils and mushrooms ( a flavorful, hearty dish)
Dessert:
Cheesecake with figs
Seasonal Ice cream trio (hibiscus, egg nog, and blackberry cheesecake)
(Both choices were delicious and not too big to put you "over the top" after all of the above.)
All of that, plus 3 glasses of wine (lovely wine list) and a beer (Rochefort 8 Degree) = $122.
Service was also outstanding and the space (former Deux Chimenees) is beautiful. Elegant, yet casual and not pretentious.
I highly recommend trying Vedge - even if you are a carnivore. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Pasta near Nob Hill / Union Square?
Thanks, David! The menu looks good and you are right - it is very close. Perfect.
Pasta near Nob Hill / Union Square?
Hello all,
A friend and I are traveling from Philly to San Francisco next month to run a marathon. Looking for an Italian/pasta place for dinner where we can get basic pasta dishes for the meal the night before. I saw that Fino was recommended for that area. Any others? Walking distance or minimal public transportation preferred. We will be at the White Swan Inn.
Thanks for any insight!
Great hot dog find in South Jersey
The are Sabrett all-beef dogs, according to the order. The Chicago Dog is not listed on the online menu but was on the menu board at Cool Dog. Mmmm... must try.
Great hot dog find in South Jersey
Sorry, it's Cool Dog Cafe in Cherry Hill: www.thecooldogcafe.com
Great hot dog find in South Jersey
The restaurant opened on Route 70 East (in the same plaza as Ace Hardware) several months ago. My boyfriend and I tried it today for lunch and it was great. I had the veggie dog with relish, cheddar and mustard and he had the beef dog with ketchup and cheddar. We kept it basic and both were delicious. The veggie dog was the best I've had and the beef dog looked delicious (and boyfriend said it was). They have a huge menu of toppings as well as quite the variety of hot dog specialties. They also serve Belgian fries which looked and smelled terrific but we did not partake on this trip.
The place was spotless, the service was prompt, efficient, and nice/courteous and the owner walked around to check on everyone. He obviously takes a lot of pride in his establishment. I will be going back to try a beef dog (I have the Chicago Dog in my sights).
Tuna Hoagies?
I like Primo Hoagies' tuna diablo. Not traditional, but darn good. Haven't had their regular tuna sub, but I would imagine it to be good based on the other sandwiches.
ISO Best French Onion Soup in the Center City
Parc on Rittenhouse Square makes a mighty fine French onion soup.
Late Lunch inbetween Mount Laurel & Marlton for Friday
I've been racking my brain and all I can picture in those areas are chains. That being said, if you don't mind driving to Marlton to meet her how about Redstone Grill in the Promenade. Chain, but better than most. Pizzacato (sp?) Is over there, too, but haven't been in a long time, so can't vouch for it.
The Crepe and the Ribbon - Haddonfield
Nice review and I could not agree more. We had the same server and he was great. I was there a few months back and had the mozz-tomato-basil crepe. Delicious. Definitely give this place a try.
ISO Great Lemon Meringue Pie In Center City or So. NJ
Hi all,
Any recommendations for bakeries in these locations that make good lemon meringue pies? On a mission to find one for a friend's August birthday and this friend loves lemon meringue so I want it to be a good one. Thanks for any suggestions!
Ice cream spot in Cherry Hill or Moorestown areas?
Thanks, we went to Sundae's which had excellent shakes. The Pop Shop I would be willing to try if they had an adult swim hour. Every time I pass by there it's full of screaming kids. But good to know - thanks. Maybe the trick is to go later in the evening.
Ice cream spot in Cherry Hill or Moorestown areas?
Thanks all! I have choices!
kmsue - that's funny about Chik-fil-A - last night on the train I overheard someone raving about their milkshakes. Who knew!
Ice cream spot in Cherry Hill or Moorestown areas?
Hello all - looking for an independent (not Friendly's, etc.) ice cream shop in this area or nearby that serves exceptional ice cream and /or milkshakes. Any thoughts? Thanks!
London Grill, Fairmount
You know, I had brunch at London Grill last summer and had the same abysmal experience: the food was terrible and the server we had seemed disinterested in actually serving. Well, here's another mystery as to how this place manages to stay in business.
Haddonfield BYOB Holiday Dinner suggestions
Probably not a lot of help to you, but for what it's worth, I can speak for Melange which I find to have great food and service. I know others who have been at some of the others you mention and I've heard mixed reviews. Does it have to be Haddonfield? Collingswood has some great dining options, too.
Any good Greek places in South Jersey?
Try Onassis Cafe on Haddonfield-Berlin Road in Cherry Hill (Across from Wegman's / Cheesecake Factory / etc. shopping center). The owner is the same owner of Cafe Zesty in Conshohocken. Excellent Greek food as well as outstanding whole grilled fish. It's BYOB, too.
need help--what is best INDIAN or MEXICAN REST IN PHILI
I second Tequila's. Have not been to Lolita's. I wanted so badly to like El Vez due to various people telling me how great it is, but found the food to be way too salty, even the guac (which likely would have been good had it not been killed with salt and greasy tortillas chips). Also thought that overall the food tasted too greasy/processed at El Vez - and I got a vegetarian entree. Just my 1 cent of opinion.
Your favorite Wegman's Dessert
I second the Awesome Chocolate Cake. And they make a mini version if you don't want to commit to the full size. Oh My! It's wonderful.
Unique food gift recipes 2006 - what have you got?
Thanks for the recipe! Sounds yummy. This gives me an excuse to buy vanilla bean paste which I've been considering purchasing now for awhile. I LOVE applesauce....
Unique food gift recipes 2006 - what have you got?
So foodrocks, is that famous applesauce recipe confidential? Would love to have it if you'd be willing to share. Sounds delightful. Thanks if you can!
Fine Dining Around East Stroudsburg?
I think the restaurant in Delaware Water Gap is called Trails End Cafe. I used to go there frequently when my parents had a Pocono house, but it's been about 8 years. Used to be very good and innovative. I heard it's still there, but not sure.
Venison Tenderloin - summer recipe?
Interesting! Thanks - I will definitely try this - I have all the spices you mention.
Venison Tenderloin - summer recipe?
My husband's favorite meal is venison tenderloin and he has requested it for his b-day. I ordered some from D'Artagnan, but now I'm wondering what to do with it. Typically I make venison in colder months using dried cherries, etc., wine, potatoes, i.e. "heartier fare." However, in the 90 degree+ weather we have here in PA, does anyone have a lighter venison recipe?? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Can you cook venison tenderloin on the grill? Otherwise I'll just crank the A/C around dinnertime! Thanks.
