Chicago Gourmet 2010

I agree -- this festival is EXCELLENT. They currently have an early-bird discount of $90 (versus $150) for a one-day pass which makes it a little easier to swallow. We went last year and watched a cooking demo on the Millenniuum Park stage by Rick Bayless and Marcus Samuelson -- very cool. And the amount of food and drink options are almost overwhelming. When you arrive at the entrance, they give you a wine glass, tote bag and guide to the festival. Then you are free to taste as much of whatever you would like. It was not overcrowded and had some nice sitting areas throughout (think modern couches and hi-tops, not old picnic tables). Definitely worth the splurge if you are into higher-end food.

We also attended the Green City Market Chef's BBQ last year which was also a great event, but they have increased the price from $60 to $100 this year and it only lasts for two hours (6-8pm). You get A LOT more for your money at the Chicago Gourmet Festival and will see many of the same chefs, in addition to many, many more.

Best small restaurant with mind-blowing food

Caro Mio, www.caromiochicago.com, at 1827 W. Wilson is a wonderful Italian place in a great neighborhood. When we lived in Ravenswood, we used to go there almost weekly and became good friends with the staff. The food is amazing -- fresh, homemade pastas, gnocchi, etc. and it is BYOB. We actually did our rehearsal dinner there years ago -- so delicious!

Reasonable Chicago Birthday Dinner

Think Cafe, www.think-cafe.com, at 2235 N. Western is very good and BYOB. I also really like doing Spanish tapas for group dinners and Cafe Iberico on LaSalle (near Ontario) is great! If you were willing to go further North, I would highly recommend Caro Mio, www.caromiochicago.com at 1827 W. Wilson. They have amazing Italian food and are BYOB with no corkage fee. One of our favorite restaurants in the city!

Bakery in Western Suburbs?

I have ordered several cakes from Busy Bee and they do a very good job. The cakes are delcious... especially their Atomic Cake with about 10 layers including fresh bananas, strawberries, fudge, yellow cake, and chocolate cake. They do a nice job decorating, but don't so anything super cool like you might see at some other bakeries. And their chocolate frosted cake donuts are awesome : ) They are closed on Sundays and close somewhat early during the week.

La Saltena Empanada Dough - where to find?

On a recent visit to Miami, my grandmother made some great empanadas filled with picadillo. She purchased the empanada wrappers at a latin grocery store, filled them and baked them in the oven. The brand she used was La Saltena... has anyone seen these in the area? I live in the Western burbs, but work near O'Hare and am in the city somewhat often.

Thanks!
