Good restaurant to take mom to in Palo Alto?

Thanks, I found the cuban restaurant you mentioned on Yelp. It sounded interesting.

Good restaurant to take mom to in Palo Alto?

I am taking my mom to meet my boyfriend for the first time over dinner in Palo Alto tonight, I need recommendations as to a good place to make reservations. We're open to any kind of food, but mom is a bit price conscious so I'm not looking for any restaurant that is extravagantly expensive (entrees up to ~$25 ok). Recommendations for a restaurant with good food, a good atmosphere (without it being too loud), and decently priced would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

CSA recommendation and questions

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I have signed up for a 4 week trial with Two Small Farms. The first pickup is this Wednesday. I will reply back with my impression of the produce.

Visiting from Austin, Looking for Cheap, Authentic Taiwanese Street Food

I was at Mama Chen's a couple weekends ago. I thought it was quite good. The oyster pancake there was one of the more authentic ones I've had in the Bay area. Excellent, they even have a version of it with shrimp. They were out of a few things so I missed out on their guabao and sweet rice stuffed in intestines(?). Their green onion pancake was very thin and crisp. Their porkchop was really nicely seasoned. I thought their beef noodle soup was good, although not all that spicy. They had rice steamed in a bamboo pot that was ok (not enough of the flavor from the bamboo came through). I didn't order the stinky tofu so can't say whether it stands up or not. I'll have to see if I can get a hold of the menu again. I can't wait to go back, hopefully they'll have the foods they ran out of.

CSA recommendation and questions

How does the Mariquita Mystery Thursday basket work? I will probably try the Two Small Farms CSA first with the 4 week trial to see if it's not too much. I'm hoping they'll have mystery vegetables as I am always looking to expand my cooking repertoire. I'd like to try the Eatwell Farms program at some time too, since I've been curious to try pastured eggs for some time.

Sources for humanely raised, pastured pork?

Thanks for the suggestions, I will have to stop by BiRite and see what cuts they offer.

CSA recommendation and questions

Thanks for the tip. They sound great. I might be encouraged to eat a lot more veggies, especially knowing that they are grown in a more responsible way than conventional agriculture.

CSA recommendation and questions

I am a single person living alone but am interested in signing up for a CSA, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations as to a good CSA to sign up with. Right now, I am deciding between Two Small Farms and Eatwell Farm. Two Small Farms is cheaper, but Eatwell gives you the option of picking up every other week instead of every week. Since I will be mainly cooking for myself, would a box of produce from either of these CSAs be too much for me to eat in a week? How much food is included per box?

Thanks!
Wendy

Sources for humanely raised, pastured pork?

I am searching for a reliable source where I can find pork belly that comes from pasture raised pork. A reliable source of pastured eggs would be great as well.

Thanks!

Recipes using rose water?

Thanks! Any suggestions for finding organic roses, as some recipes seem to call for rose petals?

Recipes using rose water?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a bottle of rose water and orange blossom water, but have no recipes to use them in. I would love any suggestions on ways in which to use them.

Thanks!

Shanghai Dumpling Shop in Millbrae?

Hi all,

A friend suggested that we visit Shanghai Dumpling Shop this evening for their XLBs. I can't seem to find mention of them on this board, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion of their food? I am debating between visiting this place or taking my friend to Sunny Shanghai in San Bruno, as I love their food.

Thanks!

Pho (Redwood city or somewhere close)

What Pho places do you recommend in San Jose. Today seems like a nice day for pho.

Chicharrones

All this talk of chicharrones has got me craving them. I will be in the Mission tonight, around 16th St & Mission. Any suggestions on where I can get tasty chicharrones in the neighborhood?

Best steak tartare for lunch in SF?

Bix and Cafe Claude both have appetizer portions. Not sure if Bix serves it for lunch though. With Cafe Claude, you have an option of two sizes.

Bix - What can't I miss?

Thanks! I'm sold. I like their lobster spaghetti a lot, but the budget is a bit tighter this time around, so the chicken hash sounds like a sure bet.

Bix - What can't I miss?

I love Bix, but have not had their chicken hash, is it similar to a corned beef hash, but with chicken? I'll be going there in a couple weekends for a birthday dinner, I'm already checking out the menu :-)

Back A Yard in Menlo Park report...

Thanks a bunch! I'll have to print out your suggestions.

Looking for Taiwanese-style "Gua Bao" in the Bay Area

I think I saw gua bao being served at Joy Restaurant in Foster City. I'll check the menu when I get home.

Zackary's Pizza: how is the Stuffed Deep Dish?

What combination do you usually get at Patxi's? I'm thinking of getting a pizza to go and am debating between the Special (sausage, mushrooms, onions and green peppers) and the Spinach Pesto (spinach, basil pesto, and parmesan). Would the spinach pesto have tomato sauce on it in addition to the pesto?

Back A Yard in Menlo Park report...

Is there someplace close by where you can eat the food, like a park since the location seems to have limited seating? I'm thinking about going there this weekend.

Jerk Chicken/Fish/Pork in SF

Anything with Scotch bonnet peppers will be scorching hot. I made jerk chicken with it a couple times, the first time, I burned my fingers cutting the darned peppers. The jerk came out super spicy. Delicious!

San Bueno Taco Truck at Sansome and Sutter

While walking back from getting a sandwich from Noah's Bagels (coupon for $2 off of one of their "lighter fare" menu items, I came upon a taco truck on Sansome close to the corner of Sutter. The name of the truck is San Bueno. The truck offered a selection of meats (al pastor, carne asada, lengua were the meats I remember) and several preparations, including tacos, burritos and tortas. Since I already had my sandwich from Noah's, I just got one al pastor taco with spicy salsa for $2. The taco consisted of just the al pastor and a bit of cilantro, onion and salsa. I thought the meat was tasty, if a little dry. The burritos looked to be quite generous in size. I will go back for a further look in the near future.

As for my Mediterranean turkey sandwich from Noah's. I actually thought it was pretty good. The sandwich had turkey, some sort of spread (cream cheese based, tasty), roasted red peppers and pepperoncini. For $3.99 when using the coupon, it was a good deal.

Pictures of the sandwich and the taco.

Best SF Value Restaurants

I keep going back for that garlicky spread they provide with the bread. It also comes with the patatas bravas, some of my favorite in the city.

First Visit to Gallo Giro in San Jose

Any suggestions on locations? I'll be down in San Jose this weekend, I could grab Mexican for one of my meals.

Good Dining in or near Daly City

THanks! I love Mexican food. Will have to try all three.
