So what are you making for Shavout?

I was at Costco today and did not see the blitzes. How many blitzes did you get for $16?

So what are you making for Shavout?

Sounds delish. Do you peel off the rind first? What do you dip in it besides bread cubes?

Costco cheesecake? Did I imagine it...?

Cam we talk about the milk for a minute. What's the deal with the Jerry cans? Both my kids and myself find them very hard to pour from cleanly. After watching the cnbc special, I assume this was done as a space saving measure because now the containers are perfectly rectangular. But thespilling issue, as well as a couple of ver leaky cartons has made me willing to pay a "premium" for Trader Joes slightly more expensive ( but still way below kosher supermarket) milk.

Passover in puerto rico at Gran Melia

Club Kosher is running this year's program. It is NOT the same program as the one several years ago. I never went on their Passover programs, but I have been on several of their winter vacation programs. The food was always plentiful and delicious, they were responsive to suggestions and my kids had a blast. As for the Gran Melia, I also heard the beach is not really a beach, more of a rocky strip of sand. Don't know about the buildings though.

Trader Joe's Kosher Specialties?

I"m not confusing it with Pas Yisroel. My question is can you use challah for HaMotzei from which challah has not been taken (even if it is kosher)?

Trader Joe's Kosher Specialties?

That's what I figured, but I erred on the side of caution. I should prob call them.

Kosher French Macaroons

Cravingz in Cedarhurst sells them and they're good. It is owned by the same owner as Gotta Getta Bagel in Woodmere. I know he delivers challahs all over tri-state area, maybe he could bring you some macarons. (516) 792-5988 ask for Joel (owner)

Trader Joe's Kosher Specialties?

Other ppl mentioned the pareve chocolate chips. They are dangerous! I would prob lose 5 lbs if they lost their hashgacha b/c I munch on them all day (delicious!). Here are some other things I buy there:
Milk, OJ and eggs- super fresh due to very high turnover, Almond Milk and Soy Milk (low prices), Bread- whole wheat, sprouted, pita, wraps, bagels, etc. whatever kind you want, they sell it kosher and pareve.
I have bought Challah and Rolls there in the past but then I wondered if challah was taken cuz it didn't specifically say so on the package (montreal vaad). If anyone knows anything aboyut this, please let me know.
The sorbets are a great deal- they are so much cheaper than Sharon's Sorbet anywhere else. The Vanilla Soy Ice Cream will make you wonder why you ever bought Tofutti.
Fancy Sea Salts- Pink Himalayan Sea Salt in a grinder for $2???
Frozen veggies- not all have a hashgacha, some are blanched before freezing. Ask your rabbi.
Frozen fruit- Triple Berry Blend is awesome with Greek yogurt.
I know people who buy their pizza dough all the time (it's still kosher in my TJ despite a rumor last year). I think it is extremely hard to work with even when brought to room temp. I have given up on it.

Grilling beef to eat cold on shabbos

Kosher by Design-Short on time p 158. It's possible that Susie Fishbein adapted it for her Passover by Design book. The only thing that would be hard to substitute is Worcestershire sauce.
By the way, there is an index available online for all Kosher by Design recipes that lists which volume and which page each recipe is on.

Grilling beef to eat cold on shabbos

I vote London Broil as well- the best recipe I've found so far is Susie Fischbein's Bloody-Mary Marinated London Broil. You don't have to heat up the sauce for Shabbat, the meat is delicious without it.

Loving Hut, NYC

People freak out over that mac n cheese. It's made with Daiya cheese and I think it's rice pasta.

Loving Hut, NYC

Curious to know how this turned out. The food at Loving Hut is delish for takeout, but the entire place is about 4 feet wide. Not the place for any business meeting.

Specialty Cake-- like a kosher Charm City Cakes

Le Cake Chic in Lawrence is phenomenal. I don't have the contact info, but you can probably reach Daliah through the Le cake Chic Facebook page.

I Need a Broccoli Kugel recipe with NO MAYO

I have a frozen bag of broccoli and caulliflower (16oz total). I'd love to make a kugel for shabbos, but every recipe I've googled has mayo in it. I don't have any in the house and I don't like to use it anyway. Does anyone have a good recipe (besides the creamed corn and french fried onion one) for a basic kugel without mayonnaise.?

What is a Brick Roast?

Berel- You're in the 5T area, right?
I'd love to know which butcher is turning $7.99/lb minute roast into a $14.99 split minute filet for free.

Quinoa kugel and other quinoa recipes for Passover

Trader Joe's Quinoa is made by Ancient Harvest so it always bothered me that the TJs box said you had to rinse the quinoa, while the AH box said it was pre-rinsed.
If you follow the link to DaphnaR's recipe above, it says that you don't have to rinse either brand. Anyone want to weigh in?

What is a Brick Roast?

The square cut and French roast are definitely not the same quality as a brick roast. At Brachs they usually call it a shell roast and they often leave in the thick hollow vein running thru it which I find disgusting. I have seen brick roast at GG. I have tried grilling the "split" brick roast from seasons but I have much better results cooking the roast for 3+ hours in the oven like a brisket. The Tevya brand cooks up just fine and is Priced much cheaper than the others.

Wish list for Passover 2012 - manufacturers take note

Splenda is available institutionally for Pesach, but not for consumers. I scored a box of Sucralose from Israel this year.

Wish list for Passover 2012 - manufacturers take note

Sugar-Free Powdered Drink Mix. I don't know why this is overlooked year after year! On-the-go packets would be great, but let's start with some basic Iced tea/Lemonade/Fruit Punch cans.

Saving money on food for Passover

I love all these great ideas. Many of them I already do. The suggestion to keep it simple and use fresh ingredients/produce is definitely the way to go. Here's another suggestion- if you MUST have the processed stuff- pancake mix, cake mixes, baked goods, etc. buy the bare minimum for the first days. By Chol Hamoed, the "regular" supermarkets and many of the kosher supermarkets reduce the prices on the boxed stuff and especially on the baked goods. You can usually get the cereals and cake mixes for 99 cents.

Kosher L'Pesach Margarine

They have the Mothers' stick margarine at Brach's too. Strangely, my mom called to ask them if they had it in stock, they said "no" she asked if they were going to get it in at all this year and they said "no, just tub margarine." Less than 15 minutes later, I was in the store and they were unloading CASES of stick margarine!

Still good after a year?

The cake mixes usually have a "Best By" date stamped on them. The ones I saved from last year are still good. Also, tuna cans have a use by date. All the matzoh by-products are fine if stored in a Ziploc. All they are is flour and water- nothing that can go bad!

Passover Oil

Brach's had Grapeseed Oil in a (I think) 32 oz bottle for $6.99 for Pesach. not bad!

Kosher for Passover Almond Milk (Liebers)

I was in Brach;'s today and paid $2.99 for a quart size shelf-stable container. It comes in Vanilla and Original, but sadly not in Unsweetened. I was surprised with the low price- the Pacific brand and the Almond Breeze cost at least that much year-round in Brach's. It wasn't marked as "on-sale" so definitely take your receipt in for a credit.

Teff?

While we're on the topic of far out grains, has anyone seen black quinoa anywhere in metro-NY area? I don't mean red quinoa, I mean BLACK. I can't really order 10 lbs through Amazon, I just want to try one package.

Buddha Bodai reviewed in the WSJ

Since there are virtually NO vegan restaurants in Nassau/Western Suffolk, I went to Buddha Bodai in Flushing for lunch today. It's the sister restaurant of the one in Chinatown. I've been excited to try their stuff for a while.
There were lots of Chinese people eating lunch when I got there, which I took as a good sign. I debated for some time which dish to order telling the lady that I didn't want greasy, fried or spicy. She made some recommmendations- I ordered the lunch special of Shredded "Beef" with Bean Sprouts. It came with a pumpkin-mushroom soup and brown rice.
Now I am not one to limit my salt intake. I like my food with a good shake of salt. This food was absolutely inedible. The soup tasted like it had a chicken base, so I am guessing it was made with TONS of pareve consomme powder. The main dish was even worse. It was basically a bottle of salt in an inch of oil. The best thing in the meal was the part of the Plain Steamed brown Rice that didn't touch the sauce.
I was super-disappointed and my body actually ached after eating maybe 1/6 of the dish (I was starving). Dislike!

Shopping Advice

I've seen MimiCreme in my local Stop and Shop and the major kosher supermarkets all have it.. I heard they debuted a new product at KosherFest- a Richwhip type dessert whip. Heard it tastes just like regular pareve whip although it is supposedly healthier (though not lower in fat and costs about 5 times as much).

As I've mentioned on this board before, the Earth Balance Buttery Sticks are actually salted to the point that my baking came out salty tasting. I use the Earth Balance Shortening Sticks instead.

Sheva Brachot Catering in 5 towns area

My family used them to cater an in-home party for over 100 ppl. The food was absolutely amazing and delicious- so good that they had to deliver more in the middle of the party (not their fault). Even stuff like the egg rolls, which you would think wouldn't taste good unless straight out of the fryer, were fantastic. They also sent some servers to set up, serve and cleanup.
