Prix-fixe sunday dinners at AK?

Has anyone tried this? I heard it's a 4-course meal, but just wondering if there is a fair selection on the menu, or if it's just plain good.

Gjelina for group of 10-15?

I'm thinking of dinner for a large group on a sunday early evening at Gjelina. Hoping to try the outside garden area since people say it's quieter than the inside. Is this doable? (do they have seating to accomodate this size of a group?) Yay/nay?

Honey Pig.. Has anyone been there this year?

It's a great place for a large party, because they offer so much food! a group of 3 girls went there earlier this year, ordered the pork, beef, and mushroom, and could not finish the meal. definitely save room for the rice at the end... their beef steaks are delicious, too (i forgot what part of the beef it was, but it was a thicker slab of beef than regular galbi).

Park's BBQ or Chosun Galbi?

Park's has meat with much more flavor than anything chosun can offer. the price is similar; they are both on the higher end in terms of prices. Both have nice ambience, although i do have to give chosun an edge on this aspect due to their outdoor seating area. but still, the food alone will make park's worth it.

Thousand Cranes reviews??

I've read the article, but i'm not interested in the tempura bar for this particular event... i'm looking more towards the kaiseki dinner.

any other helpful suggestions?

Thousand Cranes reviews??

I'm planning on taking my family out to Thousand Cranes and reserved a tatami mat room for our family of five. I've read on the board that after the ownership change at the beginning of the year, things have gone downhill in terms of the service, quality, etc. and am a little concerned. Can anyone elaborate on the dining experience there?

I'm hoping that it isn't true...

Kyochon - Korean fried chicken

I really don't see what the big deal is with kyochon. is everyone so deprived of "crunchy" chicken that this mediocre bites of chicken blinds them into thinking this is the best fried chicken ever?
don't get me wrong... i'm korean and i love fried chicken as much as the next person, but for crispy fried chicken, i think the the ultimate example would be the traditional korean type served at prince. Tender chicken meat underneath the thin, cripsy veil of skin is what it's all about. otherwise, you're relying on the batter and the sauce more than anything else.
kyochon's original chicken has too much of the garlic and soy flavoring, and the spicy chicken is so gut-searingly spicy that you can't appreciate the meatiness of the bird. actually, the meat is not even all that meaty but rather puny compared to other fried chicken in k-town.

How to prevent a soggy croquembouche?

I want to make a croquembouche for a birthday event, but i want to make the puffs the night before the event and have them still be fresh the day after, not soggy.

any suggestions/tips?

Any DineLA Reviews?

I was there on wednesday night with a group of four, and we tried everything on the menu. Everyone liked their food. For the appetizer, I enjoyed my butter lettuce and endive salad with persimmon and pomegranate, and the roasted chestnut soup with truffle cream was satisfyingly sweet and savory. The boucheron was divine, and even the broccoli dish, of which we had low expectations, was actually surprisingly good.

For the entree, I think the two fish dishes (pompano and salmon) took top honors. My risotto that came with the salmon was delicious! One friend loved the braised short rib, but I'm a bit biased as I'm so over the whole braised beef thing at this time. The duck confit was okay. My friend thought it was way too "mushy", though.

My friend who had the tres leches loved his dessert, but after having my rich, decadent dulce de leche chocolate cake, I couldn't taste anything myself. I'll just take his word for it.

Overall, a good, solid pick, but nothing extraordinary.

Well, at least I saw Govind Armstrong in the house. That made it an extra-special night for me.

Any DineLA Reviews?

Ditto. Had been wanting to try it since its opening, but was quite undershelmed myself at this experience. Went with a group of four, tried everything on the menu. Tiny portions. So-so on taste.

The best part of the dinner for me was their bread service. I think I had two of their rosemary rolls, served warm from the oven. Need I say more?

DineLA Report: Grace

I agree... it's a great value, but please remember this isn't a night at a fast food joint.

It's only fair to show our respect to the venue, proprietors, and other guests.

So disappointed at Joan's on Third

I agree... I stopped by for breakfast with a friend and was stunned by the breakfast menu, which was both extremely limited and expensive.

Ordered fruit/yogurt granola parfait for $8. granted, yes, it came in a tall parfait glass, but i think i'll go back to my $1 fruit & yogurt parfait at McDonald's (I'm embarrassed to even mention it, but it's the only thing i'll order there, other than the coffee)

add orange juice for $3.50, and i left the place feeling very hungry and dirt poor from having cleaned out the bank account.

perused the premises and everything seemed really overpriced.

thank you for the great ingredients and quality, but don't gouge our wallets, please.

No name Korean places in K-Town

love it... especially the old-school korean ghetto decor and stripped down seating options (benches, wooden chairs and tables)

food is great for ahn-ju (appetizers to go with alcohol), and price is very reasonable.

Soju Bars in K-Town and OC

not really a soju bar per se, but a regular bar. they have cocktails, beer, hard liquor, and yes, soju.

i guess it's a bit more upscale than places like dansungsa.

Ole Tapas Bar, Studio City - Great!

hmm... i went there a couple of months ago for the second time, and i thought it was pretty average (which was my reaction on my first visit). the only thing that stood out was the flatiron steak.

and don't even bother with the dessert menu.

good white sangria, though a bit too sweet for my taste.

recipe for those soft, fine-crumb japanese toast breads?

you know, those square, 3/4 inch sliced white loafs? they may be considered pain de mies... (unsure about that...).

i love their super-soft, tender texture and would like to recreate them, if anyone has any idea on how to do so...

Best Dim Sum

I agree about sea harbour.

it costs a little more, and there are no carts, but the dim sum you order comes out so fresh and hot and it's absolutely worth waiting and paying for.

it's the only place my group of friends will go these days (unless the drive on the 10 is suicidal...)

how long is dried powdered milk good for?

i have a recipe for crumpets that requires dried milk... the bag i have has been expired for a little while (i'm ashamed to even say how long...).

is there really an expiration date on these things? they ARE dried, after all...

Gonpachi vs. Celadon vs. Mako?

been to gonpachi and celadon... i'd say celadon for the anniversary. good food and ambience... my experience at gonpachi wasn't that bad, actually, but celadon takes the cake anyway.

sno:la yogurt - review

i tried it out this morning... just was passing by and noticed it as i was going down beverly blvd. i actually backed up, parked, and was late for my appointment just to get a taste of this rendition of the froyo craze.

they were actually not even open yet (it was 1/2 hour before opening... didn't know!), but they were gracious enough to grant my wish (especially since i backed up and even fed the meter for the experience!).

the flavor i chose was pomegranate, with blueberry, strawberry, and pomegranate seed toppings. i picked the small size, and the total was $4.95 for a seriously huge portion! no air pockets, guys!!! and goodhealthgourmet was right... definitely creamier than pinkberry, and it did have a tartness that was comparable to it, if not a tad more tang (was that due to the fact that i happened to pick the pomegranate flavor?).

i also got a sample of the mango flavor, and it seriously tasted like fresh mangos. fantastic! next time, i might order the "twist", which gives you a twist of two flavors (again, genius!!!). i would have done that today if i had not been in such a rush and had studied the menu a little closer.

all in all, it was a great breakfast for me! i will definitely be back for more...

Two Bad Burgers at 3 Square

hmmm... that's too bad...

i went there and sat at the communal table for lunch a few weeks back and had the best time! hans rockenwagner himself was at the table, shuffling paperwork and accomodating guests at the same time. i was a bit star-struck, but kept to myself and munched on...

i had the mini sandwich sampler (chose the meatloaf, tuna salad, and shrimp grilled cheese), washed it down with a bottle sparkling lemonade (sonoma something? it was fantabulous!!!). i had a great time, the service was fast and friendly, and i vowed to return again to try the other stuff on the menu.

maybe it was an off day? i still think it's a gem of a place in the area.
