Solid dining (vegetarian-friendly, but meat OK too) on the East End of Long Island

I've lived in East Hampton for 20 years (grew up there), am now in NYC for the summer. Going home with a friend for the weekend to show him the place. I am generally not a huge fan of the sceney (Nick&Tonis, Pacific East [though I heard that closed]) restaurants. I like good, fresh food though, and assuming entrees are in the 15-25 range that's just fine.

My friend is vegetarian but I eat meat. I was thinking a few of my favorites from my research the last few years are:

Dockside in Sag
Matto in East Hampton
Nichol's in East Hampton (though this one is probably the least veg-friendly)

Other ideas/updates on these? Looking to show him a good dining time without ending up with a $250+ bill at Della Femina for four of us (mom+dad included).

Thanks folks!

Lunch In Flatiron/Chelsea (20th st.) area

I work on 6th ave. between 19 and 20th and am still looking to find a takeout lunch/sandwich (casual, below 10$) spot I like. I've tried Spoon and Fifth Avenue Epicure, and both were good enough but less than stellar.

Any recommendations? I'd heard about a promising French bakery (J'Adore on 23rd st) but also heard a rumor it is now closed. Anyone?

The ideal meal would be a baguette-heavy joint with ham/brie-esque fare, but really anything decent for lunch works just fine.

Grocery Store in East Village?

I recently moved to a summer sublet on 3rd st. near 2nd ave. and wonder if anyone has insider tips to grocery shopping. I don't do an extensive amount of cooking but do need things like fresh breads, some produce, cheeses, some meats, etc. Whole Foods is 3 blocks away at Houston and is nice, but I'm curious as to where others in the area suggest.

I've had Food Emporium and St. Mark's Market recommended. Thoughts? Other ideas?

When mentioning places, do provide a sense of how it compares to Whole Foods price/quality wise, if possible.

Thanks!

French restaurant in Ann Arbor

Despite warnings about the lack of "frenchness" to it, The Earle Downtown still appears best suited for my cheese/steaks/seafood (with some French flair) desire.

Momskitchen also recommended West End Grill. Is that the consensus?

The others recommended (Eve, Earle Uptown) are either not the right atmosphere or the foie gras/pate kind of French I'm not that interested in.

I forgot Weber's... it may not be considered a French restaurant but has lots of favorites. Any opinions of that place?

French restaurant in Ann Arbor

Hi there,

I'm a college student interested in taking 5 or 6 friends out to dinner for my birthday (mom is paying as a gift) and am a French food freak. I've visited Paris a few times and I tend to like the stereotypical stuff--moules frites, escargots, steak-frites, lots of cheese and seafood and steaks etc.

I've been looking a lot (I could spend a lifetime just admiring menus of restaurants) and seem to have it narrowed down to:

The Quarter Bistro

Eve

The Earle (downtown)

I've heard consistently good things about Eve, but when I strolled in for a menu the other day I found the place a bit stuffy, and though the appetizers look great, the menu lacks some of the traditional french fare I seek (and it's a bit short).

Quarter Bistro and The Earle are a bit better in that department (menu items). Comments on the food itself? Any restaurants I'm missing? All help appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt
