Looking for a place to take serious cooking classes

Hi fellow chow hounders,

I'm looking for a place to take cooking classes in Chicago---I live in Lakeview but don't mind traveling anywhere in the city as long as I am getting a quality hands-on learning experience. I admit that the only place I have taken classes in Chicago has been at The Chopping Block in the Merchandise Mart. I would consider myself a fairly decent cook in need of polishing up on technique and knife skills As for cuisine, I am open to any and all although I am most interested in French and New American.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Am looking for a place that makes authentic tamales for Christmas eve dinner? We live in Lakeview but I am willing to travel anywhere within the city.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

New Argentinean restaurant

Hi fellow chow hounders,

Have any of you heard of a relatively new BYOB Argentinean restaurant that would have opened within the past 6 months in the city? Possibly Lakeview or Bucktown?

Planning 40th birthday trip to San Francisco

Hi fellow chowhounds,

I am planning a long weekend trip to San Francisco to celebrate my 40th birthday in mid-September and would like to get restaurant recommendations for;

1.) One blowout dinner (the one restaurant you would say is the absolute must for anyone going to San Francisco..I am sure that will be difficult)
2.) Two moderate restaurants, Italian, pan-Asian and/or seafood restaurants would be great but my friends and I are adventurous diners so other types of cuisine could be of interest as well
3.) Two breakfast and/or brunch choices as well as a place for dim sum

Also, can anyone give some tips on getting from San Francisco to Napa for a day trip.

Thanks in advance,
Tanya

Need help narrowing down steak house for birthday dinner

Well, we moved from NY and his favorite steakhouse there was Peter Lugars so based on that it would be old school and straightforward. But when we were there we also enjoyed places like the Strip House, Landmarc and Dylan Prime. That is why I thought David Burkes Primehouse and Custom House could be good choices. And the only reason for Mortons (we have never been to one) was its claim to being the original. I am not sure if that helps but we are looking for something that not only focuses on the meat, but also has creative sides and a great atmosphere.

Need help narrowing down steak house for birthday dinner

I know there have been several posts comparing all of the steakhouses in CHicago but I have narrowed down my choices to the following four and need you chow hounds to help me choose the one for my husband's birthday:

1. David Burkes Primehouse
2. Mortons (the original on State street)
3. Gibson's
4. Custom House ( I know it is the least true steak house on the list)

I considered Gene and Georgetti's as well but decided against it after reading several reviews.

Thanks for your help!

Dinner in Lakeview,Lincoln Park or Bucktown Sat night

I have family coming in this weekend and am trying to think of a place that will appeal to a broad range of tastes and have a fun atmosphere. For now the cuisine(s) we have narrowed it down to are Pan Asian or ASian Fusion, Greek/Mediterranean, MExican, New American and maybe even Italian. I know this is a long list but any help trying to narrow it down will be greatly appreciated. Also, trying to keep the entrees to the $20 or preferably, under, range.

Thanks in advance!

Naha,Blackbird,Perennial or Aigre Doux

Even though i have heard great things about those places I think we are going to stick with Aigre Doux. I have been wanting to try it for too long a time. But thank you for all of your wonderful suggestions. One last thing, I know they have a nice bar at the restaurant but is there a bar nearby you recommend for a pre-dinner drink or should we just stick with the bar at the restaurant?

Comments on Cafe Iberico

I agree. Cafe Iberico has its place but i would not describe it as a top place for tapas but for what you pay it is pretty good. The wine is also extremely reasonable so it's a fabulous place to go with a group of people on a budget.

Naha,Blackbird,Perennial or Aigre Doux

Am in serious need of help in deciding which among these to choose for dinner with my husband. We have never eaten dinner at either one of these. It would be for this Wednesday, May 13 so I need to make a reservation fast. It's not a special occasion just want to try something new and have heard so many great things about all of them, especially Aigre Doux and Blackbird. I consider myself a foodie while my husband is slightly more conservative when it comes to eating. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Tribeca suggestions....

I would second The Harrison as a good choice. The martinis at Dylan Prime are fantastic! The problem with Upstairs at Bouley, at least the last time I was there, was that it is very small and hard to concentrate on a conversation. The Odeon can be kind of fun. We used to really like Landmarc but the service and food may have slipped a bit since they focused more attention on their Time Warner Center location.

Restaurant recommendations needed for group of 12 for early dinner

I am having family and friends coming in from out of town for my daughter's baptism at the end of May and am interested in recommendations anyone might have for an early dinner on a Sunday night for a party of 12. We live in River North so we would be interested in restaurants in our neighborhood, the Loop, Streeterville, the Gold Coast or Lincoln Park. I think our party may not be big enough to reserve a private room but a restaurant that offered that would be a nice option. We would like something nice but not too expensive and the culinary tastes of our group runs the gamut (in-laws who mostly like red sauce Italian, a foodie chef, a sister who is always on a diet to myself and my husband who like to eat good food and are fairly adventuresome) , making the choice a little more complicated. Mostly, we want a place that is special but not stuffy with a nice atmosphere and of course, baby friendly. Thanks in advance for your help.

Carnivale or Nacional 27?

I have some friends coming in from out of town and want to take them somewhere has great food and offers a fun ambience (ideally with live music) with a lively but not too young crowd. I have read about both of these and each one seems to fit the bill. Any thoughts on one over the other? I am also open to other suggestions. A place with a dance floor would be a big plus.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

New to Chicago/Looking for cooking class recs

I am looking to see if there are any places that offer cooking classes, specifically pizza making, for couples? I have checked out the Chopping Block and already took a class there but didn't see any pizza making offered. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
