decent cocktails in Oakland, Pittsburgh

We have dinner reservations for tomorrow night at Legume and would like cocktails before. Are there any decent cocktail bars in the area?

The River Cottage DVD's in US?

The easiest way to watch them - without having to fuss with BitTorrent, etc - is to buy them through Amazon Video On Demand. They have the original four series plus a couple of specials / highlights shows.

You can find them all here: http://amzn.to/bGo4UL

I bought them all and watched on my Roku box, but computer viewing works great too.

Michael Ruhlman: Expert in Residence!

I'd like to make some dried cured sausages, but apartment living means I don't have have a great place to hang them. Would a small wine refrigerator work? Any other suggestions - short of moving out of the city?

Samosas, Jackson Heights

I'm moving to Jackson Heights soon and was hoping to have a samosa and empanada housewarming party. I've heard where to get good emapanadas, but would also appreciate advice on the samosas.

Silent H - banh mi reports

Just a quick addendum: had the "Greenpoint" Banh Mi today - made with kielbasa - and it was terrific. I think this is the "something missing" I was looking for. (Though I'd still prefer thai chilies over jalapeƱos.)

Silent H - banh mi reports

I've had the banh mi (classic) at Silent H twice now and have been underwhelmed both times. I can't really put my finger on it, but there seems to be something missing. It's just lacking something in the flavor department.

Two specifics come to mind:

1) The bread gets too soggy from the pickled vegetables (not a problem in Chinatown)

2) The chilies are JalapeƱos - I much much prefer the spicy kick of Thai Bird chilies - as is commonly used

3) A request for "extra spicy" was answered by a bunch of whole peppercorns on the sandwich. Weird.

Ok...that was three. Anyway, I still like the sandwiches. They are, without question, one of the best lunch options for the money in the neighborhood. I live and work in the area so will be eating them with great regularity - even unimproved. My selfish reason for posting is that someone from Silent H will read this and seek to improve them.

Anyone else have thoughts on the banh mi?

Buffalo Wings in Williamsburg/Greenpoint

Except that's really nowhere near Williamsburg/Greenpoint area...

Welcome to Williamsburg- All the Info you Dare to Share

Closed. Owners are opening a new place (or have opened a new place) called HOPE LOUNGE on Hope Street between Roebling and Havemyer. Haven't been yet, though.

I'm not sure if it was gentrification that forced them out, but it was gentrification that let them in to begin with.

Quick help pls - chicken "smells"

What does "funny" mean? In any event, I'd say two days in the fridge should be fine - assuming it was fresh when you bought it.

good weekday lunch in Williamsburg?

I second DuMont if you're bringing out-of-town guests. It's certainly more refined than Union Picnic (in a good way - and without much price difference) and is within walking distance of the park. Sit in the garden.

Another option would be Bonita - excellent mexican, great lunch specials - on S. 2nd& Bedford.

Mugg's is closed at lunch time. Kasia's kind of sucks.

Great coffee in Brooklyn

"And I agree that Gimme in Wmsbrg has the best baristas."

Yeah...when they're not too busy strumming their guitars or chatting with their friends to serve you.
