Need good food near JFK, but not Asian.
We will have a 3 hr. 40 min. layover at JFK next month around lunchtime. Would like to get out of the airport to eat, but don't want Asian food. I realize we need travel time and to be back at the airport an hour before departure. Any good options out there for us? Many thanks!
Question on oven roasted tomatoes and accompaniments
I use plum tomatoes, cut lenghtwise into 3 or 4 slices. I place them on a rack which is over a cookie sheet in a very slow oven. Set the oven as low as it'll go - I set mine lower than the lowest marked temp on the dial. I use a freestanding thermometer and try to keep the temp between 120 and 130. I leave them in all night, and if the tomatoes are really juicy, sometimes even longer. When they're the consistency I like, I pack them in jars and pour good quality olive oil over them and store in a dark cabinet. You can use the oil later - pasta salad with fresh and dried tomatoes, feta, olives, basil - and the tomatoes have so many good uses on their own.
Seared Tuna Method??
Although I'm an experienced cook, I'm confused about this. I think I remember reading, the last time I did seared tuna, that you should sear it in a dry skillet. That's counterintuitive, though. Should I add oil or not? Please help, company coming tomorrow!
Should I keep my Le Creuset round oven?
Return the LC and get the food processor. You'll get a lot more use out of the processor now and later. You've already got a crockpot for stews, etc. You can always buy the round LC dutch oven later when you're out of school and making a buck. You'll be happier this way!
Logistical Advice for a 2-Day Baking Spree
Consider freezing the formed scones and baking them entirely at the shower.
Cream puffs will be soggy if you make it the night before. So, consider completing the cupcakes on Friday night and doing the cream puffs entirely on the morning of the shower.
Good luck - I think you have an ambitious schedule. Any chance someone else could do one of the items?
YumYum Thai Atlanta
Help! I am obligated to dine here Friday night. I'm highly sensitive to MSG and don't know if Thai restaurants use it or not. The only Thai foods I've eaten are what's been prepared by friends. Can anyone give advice on what to order here that is msg-free or recommend any strategies for avoiding it? I know that Chinese restaurants usually have it in the mise en place before the foods are cooked.
Best Po Boy in New Orleans?
Hey Dude,
I live in NOLA and my 3 faves are the fried oyster poboy at Casamento's (they close during the hot summer months), the fried shrimp at Parkway Bakery & Tavern and the green tomato/shrimp roumelade at Mahony's. Good luck.
Need Recommendations : Visiting late-March/Early-April
Definitely have a fried oyster po'boy at Parkway Bakery (it's a pub, not a bakery) - the best! Try the gumbo at Orleans Grapevine. And anything/everything at Cochon.
Early Clean-up
You are not off base. The deli guy has the responsibility of serving customers until the department closes and then clean up. They don't kick you out of Macy's a half hour before closing so they go home at 9. And shame on the "customer service" person who said they'd "look into it". I'm pretty sure that was a clerk who probably would not pass on such a comment to his/her peer in the deli or inform a manager. How annoying!
one uptown meal
Dante's Kitchen - good choice. The chef has been getting a lot of local press lately and it has hurt a bit! Dick and Jenny's - too loud. Brigstens - too gloppy. Another good option would be Martinique Bistro on Magazine Street. Have fun!
Roman Candy
I have seen him several times on St. Charles Ave. around 4pm between Broadway and State.
Best Praline Available in French Quarter?
Definitely go for Southern Candymaker's. Mmmmmm, so creamy and good.
Brigtsens,Stella,or Gautreaus
Went to Gautreau's last week. Great meal! I was impressed with the delicious celery soup - very silky. Also, shrimp salad was terrific. New - (ish?) chef. I understand she is about to be named to Food & Wine's top new chefs this year. Room can be a bit noisy - it must have been the table with all the Spur's coaches...
New Orleans Trip Report- Day 1
Went to Napoleon House a few months back for lunch. Unbelievably bad sandwich. No kidding, it had 4 small slices of chicken on it, a leaf of lettuce and two slices of a roma tomato. Nothing came with it - no chips, pickle, nothing. I actually thought it was hilarious and when I pointed it out to the waiter - nicely - he was very rude. The whole experience smacked of the tourist trap the place really is.
Roadtripping to Jazzfest
Wow rockbound - that's a trip! Love Nantucket - haven't made it there in 17 months and counting, hoping for a trip in October. Nothing but lobster for me when I'm there. Lobster and more lobster. Yes to lunch at Luling City Market in A. Yum.
Mandina's
Call me crazy, but I did not like Mandina's at all. It was just gross. Greasy, gloppy, noisy and sevice was obnoxious.
On My Own 1st Night of JazzFest, Rec's for a Bar Dinner?
I'd go for Herbsaint - can get noisy around 8, tho. Nix Bourbon House - good, but definitely noisy and touristy. Cochon - good choice but gets noisy later, cool atmosphere, nice but not fancy. Perhaps Cuvee?
Vietnamese on the Westbank..
Can anyone recommend a good place that does not use any MSG in their food?
Caterer for Downtown Lunches
Here's your place: Food Art. They're located on Carondelet St., and deliver to the CBD. Use them regularly at my business.
Supporting great eateries still hurting 2.5 years later...
How about a couple of new places that deserve to succeed? It's a new paradigm out there. Try Bistro Daisy or Cafe Granada.
Is the Southern Food & Beverage Museum going to be worth visiting?
Happened quite by accident to be introduced to the Director of the Museum recently. I learned that one of the opening displays is going to be all about White House chefs and kitchens, etc. Sounded interesting...
French Quarter favorites ?
For a quiet, casual dinner I like Orleans Grapevine - small menu, good wine list, nice atmosphere. Or go to Arnaud's for a bowl of gumbo and shrimp romelaud - classic!
New Orleans restaurants (from a Yankee)
Definetly try Upperline and K-Paul's if you haven't yet. Also, had an excellent experience recently at Bistro Daisy. Also, there is a new chef at Marigny Brasserie - had dinner there last week. Food was much improved and very good - lighter and cleaner but flavorful and prepared with local ingredients. You might give it a try if you're going to hang out on Frenchmen for music.
Reporting Back - with thanks
Glad you had a wonderful time. Do come back & enjoy and tell/send your friends!
Supper Clubs In NOLA??
To cheesegrater, are you looking for a supper club - as in dinner and music/dancing? Or a dining club - as in dining out with other people who are interested in the same restaurant?
Dining Alone in the French Quarter
For a relaxing dinner alone in the Quarter, try the Orleans Grapevine on Orleans St. between Bourbon and Royal. Look for a small door & a couple of tables out front. Sit inside at the bar - good food - gumbo, cheese plate, veal medallions, etc and good wine list. Usually someone to talk to there. Or if the weather is good, the courtyard in the back is very nice, too.
