Stone Crab Weekend at Frenchy's

Wow...that was a great price! Did you have to wait long to be seated?

LOL! I know...I even found bits of it in my hair when last night's feeding frenzy was over.

Stone Crab Weekend at Frenchy's

Can't handle the Frenchy's crowd, but enjoyed my first taste of stone crab this season last night. Picked 'em up at Land and Sea Market for $21.95 per lb. (medium). Two pounds was just enough to make the hub-unit and me angry. lol I can never decide which is my favorite food on the planet...stone crab or foie gras.

An afternoon in Tampa?

Another option would be downtown St. Petersburg. it's only a 20-25 minute easy interstate drive from the airport. There are a plethora of good, independent restaurants (almost all of which will be open for lunch on Saturday), museums, shops, beautiful bayfront parks and an entertainment pier with a second Columbia location on the top floor offering panamoric views of Tampa Bay. You won't get the architectural authenticy of the Ybor location, but the food is the same. It's a very walkable area and one of the prettiest in the Tampa Bay area IMO.

Anna Maria Island Breakfast/Brunch Spots

Thank you...will make note of it. It's for the best that I didn't eat breakfast last week...I had to shoehorn myself into my stretch pants as it was this morning.

Anna Maria Island Breakfast/Brunch Spots

You guys are no help at all. :p It worked out well, however, as I never got out of bed early enough to go to breakfast this week.

Did enjoy one remarkable dinner at Beach Bistro on Holmes Beach, and two other notable meals...on at Bridge Street Bistro on Bradenton Beach and one at Harry's on Longboat Key (amazing $35 three course prix fixe wine pairing menu!).

An afternoon in Tampa?

Agree with Veggo. Probably your best unique taste of Tampa given your limited time frame. You can detox while strolling around Ybor before you head back to the airport.

The Refinery (Tampa)

When I was there over a year ago I thought it was one of worst meals I'd ever had in Tampa, and my hub-unit agreed. I might've given it another whirl given all the accolades I kept reading online, but my husband refused to ever go there again.

Anyone have any recs? I want a place that offers more than "all the usual suspects"...like creative benedicts, homemade corned beef hash, designer waffles and most importantly, mimosas. TIA!

VISTING ST. PETE BEACH LOOKING FOR GREAT SEAFOOD & STEAK

On Indian Rocks Beach, I like Guppy's and Keegan's for creative, fresh and relatively inexpensive seafood. If you like tapas, Tapas Garden is also very good with quite a charming ambience.

Best of downtown Asheville

I'm not an Asheville expert, but on my recent visit there were two standouts: Curate (Spanish tapas) and Bouchon (French comfort food). Both were top notch.

Why Do Subway Restaurants Smell Awful?

This is so timely! I never go into a Subway, so I wasn't sure what smell you were talking about. A coworker brought a Subway sandwich into the office for her lunch last week, and the place reeked for the rest of the afternoon with a plastic=y, chemically, faux toasted bread smell. I wanted to hurl.

Chow recs needed for trip to Charleston, Savannah, and Hilton Head

I was in Savannah a few weeks ago and really enjoyed Jazz'd Tapas Bar. The menu features tapas-style dishes with a regional twist. Shrimp 'n Grits, Chorizo Empanadas and Proscuitto Wrapped Scallops were all hits (and generous for "tapas"). The desserts really rocked our worlds, though...the Grand Marnier Creme Brulee and Butterscotch Bread Pudding were amazing. Nice ambiance, too.

Poll: Would you eat a dog

Absolutely not. Dogs are not called "Man's Best Friend" for nothing...they've earned that title through their devotion, protection and loyalty to our species. The very thought sickens me.

Eat Here - Anna Maria Island - Anyone Been?

I tried this over the weekend and wanted to weigh in. It's a really, really cute place incongruously situated in a strip mall. No reservations accepted and I read about the lines, so the spousal unit and I got there right when the doors opened and it filled up quickly even at 5:00 PM

Service was brisk and professional. The duckling pate was some of the best pate I've had outside of France...it had the perfect dense-yet-creamy consistency, was very liver-riche and nicely garnished with fresh fruit and toasted bread.

The $12 oyster basket delivered a lot of bang for the buck. The cornmeal breaded oysters tasted fresh and were fried to perfection. A pile of crispy, garlicky fries served as a tasty bed for the mollusks. I was not a fan of the cole slaw, however, as I found it kind of dry and bland.

The fried rockfish and chips disappointed a little. I loved the light consistency and crunch of the breading, but the fish did not taste particularly fresh. More of the amazing fries and equally unamazing cole slaw came with.

Deep fried ribs sounded more special on paper than they were in real life, but weren't bad. I would've preferred a stickier, more substantial sauce.

The apple crisp we shared for dessert was nothing short of amazing (I've actually decided to let it be my new boyfriend). ;) The fruit was richly spiced and tender, and the "crisp" topping was crunchy, chewy, caramelized perfection. Three entrees, an appetizer, a dessert and a bottle of wine set up back just under $100 before tip. Even though there were a few "misses", I liked it enough to return.

Please help... need to bring out the big guns for mother-in-law's visit!

You could always take her to the Columbia...it's almost always a crowd-pleaser. The one in Ybor is gorgeous, and the two others (on Sand Key and the St. Pete Pier) have water views if that's what you're looking for.

http://www.columbiarestaurant.com/

Parkshore Grill in downtown St. Pete has that "classy" flair you seek, with mainstream taste appeal.

If you really want to pull out the big guns, the food at Mise en Place in Tampa is always wonderful and beautifully presented...and both venue and menu have a "fancy" feel.

2011 Favorite Places to Eat - Tampa / St. Pete

Agreed on all counts. :) Service is always great there and they are always gracious about offering the deal. Over the past couple of years, I've noticed the spousal unit and I going for more and more "late lunches" at around 4:00 PM and making that the last meal of our day...it finally dawned on me what was actually happening. That's right...we've become our parents and are "early birds" in denial. lol Back in the day, I wouldn't have dreamed of going out to dinner before 7:30 at the earliest. The truth hurts. ;)

rhnault, have you tried Sunday's Fine Dining in Ybor, yet? We were pretty impressed with this "new kid on the block". They have a restaurant.com cert available online as well and accepted it nicely.

2011 Favorite Places to Eat - Tampa / St. Pete

I don't know for a fact that they do, but I'd be shocked to hear that they didn't. It was SO good...and I'm not a person who is typically bowled over by pasta dishes.

The Bernini deal is the best in town. Half price entrees and $2 Finlandia vodka drinks sure take the sting out of of feeling like you're aged enough to be doing the "Early Bird Special" thing. ;)

2011 Favorite Places to Eat - Tampa / St. Pete

I tried Laughing Cat for the first time a couple of months ago and was very impressed. The Seafood Bisque and Melanzana Rollatini were both outstanding and my Pappardelle Piemontese (prosciutto, wild mushrooms, onions, and peas paired with large egg noodles in an Alfredo sauce topped with parmesan) was the second best pasta dish I've ever eaten in my life...exceeded only by a Fiochetta with Pears, Asparagus and Taleggio I had in Italy a few years back.

I hope you like The Refinery better than I did. It seems to be a real crowd-pleaser on this board, but my experience wasn't that great. Perhaps it was just an "off night".

Curate - Asheville

Agreed. I'm a Tampa "hound", but had the extreme pleasure of dining at Curate when I visited Asheville last week. The prices of the tapas were in line with what I'm accustomed to paying at comparable venues here in Florida. Food quality and presentation, service, and a restaurant's ambiance are all important to me and I don't mind paying a little more for them. I fell in love with tapas when I spent a week in Barcelona a few years back and thought the ones at Curate were pretty authentic (bonus points). Especially loved the Berenjenas la Taberna and the Tortilla EspaƱola.

Japanese in St.Pete- Tampa area

Can't think of any Japanese restaurants in St. Pete off the top of my head. I like Pincho y Pincho in downtown St. Pete for a tapas and sangria lunch...plenty of seafood and not-meat options on the menu. Cafe Alma, Gratzzi Italian Grille and St. Pete Brasserie are also very nice (all downtown as well).

For dinner in Ybor, I really like Bernini. The Laughing Cat, Columbia Restaurant and Sunday's Fine Dining are also solid choices.

Food pics and my personal reviews of all of the above can be viewed in my blog. Enjoy your time in the Tampa Bay area! :)

World's 50 Best Restaurants...

Simmer down...the post was tongue-in-cheek since it didn't make the Top 50. You ARE on the Florida board, after all. ;)

Also, I still didn't think French Laundry was ALL THAT. Sterile, hushed, uptight atmosphere with uber-pretentious staff at every turn. Yeah, the food was spectacular...but I guess I'm just not a fan of wading through pompous BS all night when I dine. A little is to be expected in a restaurant with this kind of hype, but I really don't want to bring along my hip-boots. I'm a hillbilly, though...I'm sure it explains a lot.

World's 50 Best Restaurants...

Dayum...you sure get around ADT...that's awesome!

I have not eaten at ANY of them, although I have dined at two of the winning chefs' lesser restaurants...Keller's French Laundry and Ducasse's Le Jules Verne. French Laundry - not worth the $$$; Le Jules Verne - a life experience at any price (location, location, location). ;)

Knoxville and TN Blue Laws

I've been away from Tennessee for over 20 years, but plan a visit to Knoxville in a few weeks. Can you buy alcohol in restaurants on Sundays? If so, does it have to be after a certain time of day?

Oodles Uncorked looks nice for brunch...but I don't call it "brunch" if I can't get a mimosa.
