Wanted: Restaurant recs for locavore faves or authentic pizza

If you want a place that showcases local ingredients, is kid-friendly, and is one of Portland's best pizzerias, it's Lovely's Fifty-Fifty. Scholls and Gladstone are great, but they don't really focus on seasonal/local ingredients. Oven and Shaker isn't very kid-friendly.

Here's my review of Lovely's:

As a backup to this, Ken's Artisan.

Recs for Portland restaurants - travelling with 6 and 4 year old girls

i would recommend ristretto roasters (multiple locations) for a good cup of coffee. if you're looking for a tasty pastry with your coffee, i recommend jim & patty's coffee on fremont.

i can't say much about food with kids since i have none, but if you're planning on taking in some local craft beer spots, laurelwood brewery and hopworks brewery are both VERY kid-friendly (play areas, video games, kiddie food specials, etc. etc.)

Chefs vs City - Portland - 6/25

premieres 6/25 @ 10pm. here's the description via FN site:

"Food Network chefs Aaron Sanchez and Chris Cosentino hit up one of the hottest new food cities in the nation -- Portland, Oregon -- to test their experience against two hometown favorites, Gabriel Kapustka and Ryan McMallen. This Pacific Northwest jewel of a city will challenge their patience, luck and strength with larger-than-life fish, herbs that seriously sting, artisanal cocktails, one-of-a-kind local sweets, and the spiciest Szechuan in town! From factory to farm, this is one Chefs vs. City you do not want to miss."

i know for a fact that the cocktail segment takes place at kennedy school (watched them film).. hoping lucky strike is involved!

Help for a Returning (briefly) PDX Hound!

i agree with your suggestions, except i find the broth at pho an to be overly anise-y.. if that's your thing. i prefer pho oregon just down the road for a better balance.

and re: ferruzza, the quality can also jump all over the board depending on which hippy is making your pie (i've had everything from very good to downright messy). if you want pizza, hit scholls, kens or pyro (which i feel does ferruzzas style with more consistency)

I'm looking for the best lamb in PDX. Tried the following

i had dinner at belly timber this week, they had a lamb philly sandwich on the menu which sounded really interesting..

One night in Portland, before and after Blazers game.

upright is only open BEFORE blazer games. but i would second this. have beers before, dinner after.

Hsiao Hsing rice wine - PDX

anyone know where i can find this in the portland area?

Hood River, The Dalles update?

the pizza at double mountain brewpub in hood river is excellent.. they are shooting for new haven style and the results are good...

British candy (Curly Wurly) in the Portland, Oregon area?

try barbur world foods in the future, they also have a large selection of euro candies.

PDX - Cheap eats downtown

heading downtown from where? east portland? eat local, downtown is for the birds :-P

Where to find Maggi seasoning sauce? SE PDX

um, any ideas?

preferably would like to avoid a trip out to gresham

thanks!

in case you're curious as to why, i'm making sangrita for a tequila tasting. here's the recipe i got from a chap in mexico about 10 years back:

1L tomato juice
12oz orange juice
6oz lime juice
1.5oz maggi sauce
1.5oz inglesa sauce (worcestershire)
tabasco sauce - al gusto
1.5oz grenadine
sal y pimiento

Who has the best cheese plate in Portland?

my favorite is at saraveza. they offer a nice selection of steve's cheeses, some charcuterie, and the best house made pickles i've had from any restaurant. and they'll offer up beer pairing ideas if that sort of thing interests you.

and as for happy hour specials, they do a pretty good sized ritz cracker/summer sausage/tillamook cheddar plate for $2 or $3.

best Thai food PDX - that is not Pok Pok

i really enjoyed the som tum at baan-thai near psu. they also have a red pumpkin curry that was recommended to me by a friend (didn't try it, though). especially recommended if you like your thai food with some heat..

Dinner pre-Rose Garden concert?

toro bravo is less than a half-mile walk from the rose garden, and it's one of the best dinners in portland.. casual atmosphere and you can try lots of small plates for a reasonable price. good cocktails, too.

just moved to Beaverton - need food help, big time

sesame donuts can satisfy the breakfast/dessert/coffee needs in a pinch, and they produce a donut far superior to the much-hyped voodoo. if you like microbrews, raccoon lodge is a block away from sesame and creates some really unique beer. both of these spots should be about 6-7 minutes drive from you.

Portland Adventures

i went to lucky strike for the mapo tofu.. and from someone who's eaten MPT at szechuan gourmet in nyc, i can confidently say lucky strike's is on par.

"BEST OF" Portland??

ice cream - cool moon
bakery - ken's artisan
coffee - stumptown annex
chocolatier - sahagun

for midweek market info, google portland farmers market and the schedule/info is on the left side of the webpage

Crazy upscale Chinese food in PDX or SEA?

I agree. And I definitely get the feeling when I'm there that the Chinese guests treat a visit here as an upscale meal out. Don't expect everyone to be in suits or the ambiance to be ultra-modern, but it should not disappoint. You will definitely have the opportunity to try some real traditional preparations on things like tripe.

Pizza in Portland

i show up at ~5pm, never go on a F/Sa/Su, and NEVER wait. FYI.

Late night dining I-5 near Portland

wow, didn't know there was such a montage hate here. i've been winning free breakfast certificates, thought the food was ok. sampled some late night cornbread & fixins, was not disappointed. perhaps we had different meals?

not to mention $4 pints of la folie.. that's a deal in itself.

Late night dining I-5 near Portland

Montage.

Probably the best late-night comfort food you're going to get right near I-5 after midnight on a Tuesday. If it was one day later, I'd push for Potato Champion.. Alas..

Best Tamales in Portland

Best Tamales in Portland

Not the most traditional, but I really dig the artichoke & cotija tamales from Salvador Molly's. They're available at the Saturday and Wednesday farmer's markets as well as at the restaurant. (I prefer getting them from the markets since the restaurant is a little out of the way for me)

Tamale Lady? (NE PDX)

yesterday i was driving down killingsworth near PCC and saw a woman waiting for the bus with a blue cooler and a sign, 6 tamales for $5.. i'm pretty sure she had chicken, jalapeno, and something else according to her sign.

anyone ever encountered her? are the tamales any good? does she have a regular 'spot'?

Quinn's Gastropub - Seattle

visited quinn's thursday night for dinner. enjoyed everything, but the marrow bone with escargot was a really memorable shining star. two of us split four tapas-style plates, had a couple drinks, and left satisfied for $30 each. my only gripe was sitting in the blah upstairs area. next time, i'll sit in the more vibrant bar area.

On the road with a picky teen - PDX

i second fire on the mountain. excellent wings, delicious sandwiches/salads for the non-wing eater, cool vibe, and plenty of good microbrews on tap.
