Alternative to Sushi Zo - warmer atmosphere?

I'm glad to hear that K-zo is still good. Was getting worried as I've been goin there since they opened. I like that private both behind the beaded curtain. Will go back first chance I get. I'll take your advice and sit I the middle of the sushi bar.

Best place for fun graduation dinner near ucla

I recall that they had a house margarita that was like $8 which were quite good. They also had the premioum cocktails which cost more. Don't know if the adult beverages are important to the op. Also agree that Nook is not a place to have a celebration dinner.

See if this works: Casa Sanchez on Centinela. A fun place for groups. A large, family run restaurant with extra large booths to accommodate, good food, a great mariachi band and excellent margaritas. Moderately priced and reliable professional service. They really take care of you. I've had a few small parties there and we've always had a good time. A very festive venue. Its about 15 minutes from UCLA so you'll have a good chance of scoring a reservation. Check it out.

Fraiche in Culver City closing?

Looks like there will be a lot of vacancies in Culver City which will force the rents down. I'd like to see a good Chinese and seafood house open up.

Fraiche in Culver City closing?

Thanks Servorg. Another one of my favorites bites the dust! Hate when that happens. So where does one go for good sushi in Culver City? And which of the CC restaurants are still worth going to?

Fraiche in Culver City closing?

I have always enjoyed k-Zo but the last time I was there it was below par quality wise and service wise. Maybe it was because it was a Monday. I respect your opinion so I will go back. Just curious...what 4 items do you order? For me, it's hamachi sashimi. I'm addicted.

My New Favorite Treat - Paletas

I had the strawberry, the pineapple and the Mellon awaits in my freezer. I also had some wonderful ice cream, coffee with some chocolate chips. Next time I go, I'll take home some of their fresh cut up fruit and try some of their other goodies. I've been on a fruit kick lately so this place is going to see more of me. I plan to stock up on those fruit pops.

Fraiche in Culver City closing?

The new owners are the same that own the Grill on the Alley. I'll be looking forward to a quality restaurant. I, personally, never had a bad experience at Fraiche but that was a couple of years ago. But I did hear many horror stories. The Culver City restaurants seem to have a short life span. K -zo I hear is going down hill, le Hermatage has closed, Beacon is gone and there are others that have closed.

My New Favorite Treat - Paletas

Thanks for the tip. I've driven past this place for years. So I tried it. What a hidden gem for ice cream and fruit lovers. Can't wait to go back and try some other flavors, Mateo's on Sepulveda!

Best $25 Steak dinner?

Based on your review I decided to give Petrelli's another try. The bread was like rubber, the vegitables were cooked to death. No excuse. A cihild could cook better. The lamb chops and the steak were ok for the price. But everything else was way below par. They need a new chef.

Is it so? Does anybody know why?

Kobe Beef in America - is it real?

Like many of you hounds, I am a steak lover. This is despite my high cholesterol. I rarely order it out since I pride myself in finding and grilling a top quality cut of beef. And I eat less of it and read about it a lot. I came across a magazine article that said that Kobe beef can only be sold in Japan by law. Any American source which advertises Kobe beef, or serves beef represented to be Kobe is giving you something else...but not the real "Kobe Beef." Read this, Kobe lovers and tell us what you think?

Lox in Pasadena?

Why stop there, Happy? Why not throw on a nice slice of red onion and tomato (preferably heirloom). Finding good corn rye is another story; I should also mention that the honey smoked whitefish from Costco is far superior to the PortLock brand which use to take first place (at a steeper price).

Lox in Pasadena?

The whitefish salad is more convenient especially if you don't want to deal with the bones, carcass or head. My wife likes the salad. I like the whole smoked beauty. Very moist and tasty. I've also had fresh and wonderful halibut, clams and shrimp from Coatco. I give credit where credit is due.

Lox in Pasadena?

I prefer the whole white fish which they carry. The product you show is good enough but has other ingredients. I think mayo....maybe a bit too much ,

Lox in Pasadena?

I agree that Costco's bagels are just not the same as the New York bagels which are now hard to fine. Cosco also has maple or honey smoked salmon (not the lox) which is wonderful on a bagel with cream cheese or just plain or in pasta. Actually more flavorful than the lox and a firmer cooked texture. Don't let the packaging stop you. I've had these products at Bristol Farms and found Costcto products to be much better and considerably lower priced. I also learned that many fine hotels serve Cosco lox at their expensive brunch buffets.

In Santa Barbara for 3 days? Need restaurant recommendations...

Brophy's on the pier. Very casual and very good fresh seafood. Known for their great clam chowder. Hope it's still as good as I remember.

Lox in Pasadena?

Costco is a good source for very good lox at a fair price. It is packaged 1.5 lbs for about $20 as I recall but the flavor and texture is as good as any that I could find. They also carry decent and fresh bagels.

Good Thin-Crust Pizza on Westside?

I just had a slice at the Abbotts Pizza on Sepulveda in Culver City (just south of Culver Blvd) and it was very good. The crust was thin and crisp and a good size. There are 10-12 tables so much better space than the Venice location. They also serve salads. Downtown Culver City on Main Street is La Rocco Pizza. Also, thin crisp crust New York style.

Marina del Rey- First Timer

For lunch or dinner i would recommend Cafe del Rey. Its right in the marina with a view of the boats and the water, great food and service. Consistently good. Very "Californian." For lunch, you might want to go to Joe's in Venice for a reasonable ($19) 3 course lunch.

Best Dover Sole

Brew, I know the difference between slime sole and what a quality restaurant calls "Dover" sole. No bobble to burst. I've never seen it referred to as "true" or "common" sole on the menu of a fine restaurant. Call it what you like, but when I pay $45 ala carte, it better be the imported variety and NOT the local slime sole. Believe me. I know the difference....but thanks for your input.

Real, Traditional Club Sandwich in LA?

The diningroom at Rancho Park golf course in west LA. Good place for breakfast too.

Best Dover Sole

In my quest for Dover Sole I tried the South Beverly Grill at dinner. As is my custom, I asked the server to bring me the whole fish. I was told that the fish were pre filleted. Otherwise the fish was good, but nothing beats being served the whole fish. In my opinion.

Best Dover Sole

I don't see John Dory on their regular menu but if I see it next time I go I'll consider ordering it. Thanks for the advice.

Best Dover Sole

Dover Sole is about my favorite dish and I order it when I see it. (Not to be confused with the terrible "Dover sole sold in the markets for cheap). As you of course know, the real Dover Sole is imported and is usually one of the most expensive dishes. Now to your question. The best Dover sole that I've had in the LA area was at the Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills. They will bone it table side for you but I tell them to bring the whole thing to me and I'll bone it myself...and chew on the bones when nobody is looking. I've tried about 5-6 other restaurantsm in LA for the Dover sole, but the Grill on the Alley serves the best. Very fresh and well prepared, pan sauted (sp?) That has been my experience. Good luck.

rec's near LMU , Playa del Rey

Went to the Buggy whip a few days ago as I wanted to try the stone crabs. 40 dollars for 4 claws. Not a whole lot of flavor. In my humble opinion dunginous crab is much better. On the othe hand, the oysters were very good. 8 oysters for 14.95 was a good deal. I'll go back for the oysters.

Pann's

How did your wife like the wings? Never tried Pann's wings. We go on occasion as my wife likes their food and the place is well run, clean, casual and comfortable.

Red Lobster

Best oysters I've had were at Gulfstream in Century City. Not too hard to find ok oysters.
If you have a rec for live lobster on the westside, I'd like to know.
Thanks.

Red Lobster

I get the picture. Not a fan of most chains.but was wiling to give it a try. Been to the Palm and Hop Li on Pico does a good wok fried lobster. When desperate there is Quality Seafood in Redondo. We really need a good seafood house that's casual and not downtown LA like the Water Grill. Really hard to find a good fish and seafood house. west side or culver city would be nice.

Red Lobster

In the mood for live fresh steamed lobsters and some fresh oysters . Any opinions about the Red Lobster chain? Thanks,
