Cheesesteak around rittenhouse sq...at a regular restaurant?
I think most of us are at a loss for how to answer this question. If all your friends want is a cheesesteak, then I wouldn't be all that concerned about pleasing their "sophisticated" Manhattan tastes. In the 19th and Chestnut area, there's plenty of good food, but I wouldn't reccomend if for such an unimaginative crowd (Tampopo, Mama Palma's, Pita Pocket, etc). If you want to get them a cheesesteak, and still eat a decent lunch yourself, I say Reading Terminal Market.
Where can I get good Pho?
Realistically speaking... Philadelphia. That's only partly a joke; I think most Chowhounders would agree that New York has a serious lack of good Vietnamese food. Pho Tay Ho on 86th in Bensonhurst is the best I've found, but I wouldn't really call it remarkable; again, it wouldn't be a contender in Philadelphia (or California or DC for that matter) but it's not bad for NY. Like every other Vietnamese restaurant in this city, it I think it suffers from bland nuoc cham (the fish sauce-based dip that comes with many dishes).
