Nakayoshi Izakaya - 812 Danforth Ave.

I meant to say tempura, not teriyaki.

Despite the fact that this is a noodle-focused restaurant, I tend to prefer rice. I did try a ramen once, and I thought it was ok. The soba, on the other hand, was excellent, absolutely right texture - soft and chewy but not at all too soft. Shrimp teriyaka was right when I tried it too.

The tend to be about 1/3rd full most of the times I am there, mostly lunchtime and a few early evenings. No buzz to speak of, except that feeling you get after a couple of shots of suchu.

Yes, they have 38 "appetizers" on the menu.

I really enjoy this place.

Great to see real japanese food finally on the Danforth. Excellent beef yakinuku, soba, udon, ramen, tempura, unagi, saba, rice, etc. Sure you can get sushi there too, but in my five visits so far, I have been exploring the other delicacies. Also, there are not usually very busy, andIi only order sushi from busy places. However, little by little, this place is getting more popular.

Even the chicken teriyaki is surprisingly well prepared.

Prices are better at lunch than dinner. Overall, this a bit more expensive than the other, cookie-cutter japanese places around town, but I think it is worth the premium.

Aside from the usual sake and beer, they have sochu, and was able to convince them to sell it by the shot, rather than just by the bottle. Mmmm, I love my suchu.

Meatless products (ground round etc.) in Toronto

Ooops, guys. About the "mutton" at Kings Cafe.

I meant to sat "milligrams", not "grams". I hope that saying 23 percent of daily sodium helped a bit. So not a huge scoop of salt, but a significant amount nonetheless. Funny enough, it doesn't taste salty, but I guess that is often the case.

About sodium levels. For example, in the King's Vegetarian Stewed Mutton, a 55 gram portion has 548 grams of sodium (23% of daily values).

A bit high I guess, but I don't add salt, so I guess I'm ok with it.

I buy my veggie meat at Kings Cafe in Kensington Market August Street). They also have a location in Scarborough. I find their stuff to be the best of any I've tried. If you go to the Scarborough location (Sheppard Ave) you will have more chances to sample the goods before buying.

Sunday Night in Midtown Toronto - Suggestions?

I always find it hard to figure out where to eat on a Sunday night in this town. Anywhere moderately splurgy, Dupont to Lawrence, Dufferin to Bayview would work out.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks all

Dina's Cupboard in Yorkville has them, as does Petit Thuet on Yonge Street Near Rosedale Station, as does Edward Lesvesque on Queen St. East.

Minuet Cafe - 925 Danforth Avenue

This place just opened 4 days ago. I went yesterday and again today. It is easy to miss and easy to walk past. I looked in and noticed that the owner has a master baker diploma on the wall from Germany. We chatted for a bit. he is an asian fellow (i'm going to guess Korean).

The ambiance is ok, not special. Anyway, the long and the short of it is that his cakes are the real deal. Rich, buttery, fluffy, not excessively sweet. Just right if you like central european fine patisserie.

The prices are shocking low: $3 plus tax for a slice of cake, $3.50 for a slice of cheesecake.

best spot for lunch at IAH Airport ?

Cat Cora Houston Bush International Airport

This is a new (2 week old) resto at Terminal E in IAH airport. The service was awkward but friendly. It looks like they are slowly getting the hang of things. The food was a delightful, innovative and healthy style of new cuisine. Great spicy tomato soup, excellent beet salad, and fresh baked-while-you-wait chocolate fondant cake. Oh yes and some interesting micro-brew. A really find in airport-land!

Cafe Belong at The Brickworks

Totally Loved it! Easygoing, unimposing service, great views, interesting and tasty food choices, appropriate pricing (not cheap, but ok). A lot of subtle exotic spicing and a local flair.

Yemeni food?

I wonder if it was Yemen Cuisine at 145 Court Street. I walked by there last year and it was full of happy looking diners.

Tunisian/Turkish/Moroccan restaurant suggestions

I thought it was pretty good. Tasty, well spiced. No surprises here, just Moroccan standards. Very friendly owner. Fair pricing. I liked it better than Walima or Djerba La Douce. No Shisha (thank goodness!).

Supercore: Japanese cafe in Williamsburg

The food was tasty, but the service was quite bad. Not nasty, just poor. We waited a very long time, other people go their food before us, and after we ordered desert and asked for it four more times, it never came. The waitress finally admitted that they had run out. We were mainly served by one waitress, but another greeter-waitress also served us a bit. When it came time to pay, we got tired of waiting for the check so we went to the counter and asked the greeter-waitress to pay. The whole experience was extremely slow. We left a small tip -exactly 10 % and walked outside. To my amazement the hostess called after me and informed me that "service is not included". I said, "yes, I know." She held out the tip on the tray and looked me in the eyes. I was speechless at first and then confirmed that she was trying to tell me that the tip was too small. I said that the tip was small because we didn't get what we ordered. She just stood there, tip tray in hand. I said "I think you are pushing it". She apologised and walked back inside.

Chowfind: Marrakech (Moroccan) 1326 Danforth

HOT POT - last time I walked by there, there were installing restaurant equipment up front. It looked like they were aiming for an open grill concept. Anybody know more?

Spanish Crepes - Tripas

I understand they just opened the day I walked in last week. The owner told me the seating and counters were coming ASAP. The decor, despite being incomplete, looked asthetically impressive to me, so Is suspect the limited seating will be nice too when it arrives. Ricardo also told me that more ingredient selection is coming eventually too. TIme will tell.

Just for the record, Morocco has a wine industry, some pretty decent reds and roses, and many of the better restaurants in scenic locations serve wine and beer.

Spanish Crepes - Tripas

A tiny little new crepe joint opened on the north side of Danforth, less than half a block from Donlands. It is called Tripas. The owner explained that tripas were a kind of crepe from Spain. The texture is a bit different, almost like a very thin waffle. I tried one and it was very tasty. The prices are modest and they have an espresso machine, but I haven't tried the coffee yet. It looks like it could be a nice addition to the neighbourhood. Apparently they are open afternoon and evening. Unusual.

Restaurant venue for Sunday Afternoon private party - 40 people

Just to round the circle on this discussion. I had 47 people in my party at Melanie's Bistor lastt month and the service, vaule, food quality and overall experience were excellent. I'm really glad I did it there.

Tunisian/Turkish/Moroccan restaurant suggestions

There is a new place on the north side of Queen Street in the Beaches. It used to be a Sushi place and now it is a brand new Libya restaurant called Shakshouka. West of the Fox Cinema by a couple blocks. I can't wait to try it out. Anyone else been there yet?

Restaurant venue for Sunday Afternoon private party - 40 people

Well, after checking out a half dozen places, I settled on Melanie's Bistro on Danforth. She is all on one floor (including bathrooms), great food, and accommodating attitude. My close second choice was Sauvignon on Queen East, but it was a bit small for my group. Select sounded ok, but a bit too corporate. Ditto for Globe and Grano. These last 2 were also more expensive. I like family run businesses.

Tunisian/Turkish/Moroccan restaurant suggestions

I had couscous, pastry and tea at this little decor store/cafe yesterday. The food was really good. Just like a better than usual meal in Morocco would taste. She only had two choices - vegetable couscous and bastilla. I had the couscous, which was definitely steamed and not made instant-style. Great spicing and inexpensive. Pastries were also finely done.

Mmmm!

Tea Tree Cafe on the Danforth - vegetarian etc.

I liked Tree Tree. Erin is really friendly with everyone and her baking is different than anything I've seen in other similar places. Like clementine cake, and chocolate black bean cake. Good teas, good prices. Not so crazy about the coffee, but then hey, its a tea house. My wife liked the soup. I didn't try it.
