Simple French dinner

Bi-annual visitors to NYC, always in Dec. We started out years ago at Le Madeliene in Hell's Kitchen. When they closed we moved on to Gascogne, mainly for the cassoulet. Now they are closed and we will be in town this weekend.

We tried Le Gigot and I really wanted to like it, but the dinner was only okay and the noise level was just a little lower than the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

Have a reservation Saturday night for La Sirene, but am a little concerned. Given our past two favorites, do you think La Sirene is the correct choice or should I keep searching?

Favorite restaurants near Gulf Shores

As with many resort areas, the formula down here is that the quality of the food is inversely proportional to the splendor of the view. Sea'n'Suds is right on the beach, so you do the math. The one exception might be Cobalt, where they put out some nice dishes with a decent view. Be aware that it gets very loud in there when crowded. I find The Gulf gimmicky and inconsistent.

Group of.20 in Panama City?

Looking for a spot for dinner with a group of 20, including 7 or 8 kids, on a Wednesday night in June. I realize it's high season. Doesn't have to be a foodie place, just appropriate for a group that size. I would prefer a non-chain operation. Any ideas?

Late night Sunday dinner in West Village

Seeing a play at Bank St Theater on...well, Bank St. Looking for dinner afterward, preferably between theater and the subway. Prefer no Italian, simply because we will be on our way to Italy the next day. Everything else is in play, from burgers to pizza to French. Thank you!

Chinatown Dim Sum for rookies

Just to bring this thread up to date, we went to Jing Fong around 1100 on a Thursday. Loved, loved, loved it! The teenager was a little apprehensive about some of the dishes, but I finally managed to snag enough things she recognized that nobody went hungry. I liked the shu mai and a couple of dumplings that I really didn't recognize. I was very surprised at how low the bill was, too. Thanks, everyone, for the recs!

Are all hot dog carts created equal?

About to make our annual trek to NYC next week. I love the food carts in midtown, but wonder if I should be looking further out. Staying downtown, but we get around all of Manhattan. Where is the perfect hot dog?

Visiting Gulf shores Alabama - Where to eat?

I've lived in south Baldwin County (Gulf Shores) for over 10 years and the restaurant scene has always been a moving target. Cobalt, Cosmo's, Tin Top and Villagio at The Wharf maintain their spots near the top, while some pretty good efforts come and go.

Elli Bistro (same owner as Ginny Lane and Villagio) recently closed, which is too bad. Might be the space, which has now seen four attempts to keep a restaurant open fall by the wayside.

Lambert's (motto: If it ain't fried, it ain't food) continues to rule with the quantity over quality demographic, a significant group in this region.

A new entry called EAT! On Canal Road in Orange Beach is creating some stir. Small space where they serve up some very good food buffet-style. I was not a fan of buffets before and am still not, but those folks can cook.

Another addition that I'm personally excited about is the upcoming opening of Chappy's in Foley, where Cafe Le Roux previously was. For you Gulf Coast types, yes it's that Chappy. He has moved around some since Katrina took his building from Long Beach, MS to who-knows-where.

Additionally, all the fried seafood places for which this area is famous continue to proliferate. Shrimp Basket keeps opening stores, Mikee's, DeSoto's, Steamer, Original Oyster House, etc. Wolf Bay Lodge has a fairly new location on County Road 20.

By all means, come to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. You won't go hungry.

Chinatown Dim Sum for rookies

Looking for a Chinatown dim sum restaurant for a group of four who have never done dim sum. We'll need some patience from the employees, I'm sure. Should be on a weekday for lunch. Also, any idea on.what time would be the least crowded? I'm thinking around 11 or after 2, but what do I know?

Anyone have the scoop on Gascogne closing?

We're about to make our annual trip to NYC and I'm crushed to find Gascogne is "Closed indefinitely", according to their website. First Le Madeleine, now Gascogne...my wife and I seem to be poison to French restaurants. Now I'll have to find cassoulet somewhere else. Looking at Le Gigot...I'll try to keep from driving them out of business.

Fun place to take 20 YO daughter in LA

Not a layover, but we do have to drive from LAX to Ventura County later in the day. I would prefer to stay on the west side for no particular reason. Just too lazy to drive further...

Fun place to take 20 YO daughter in LA

Picking up my daughter at LAX around 11 am on a Sunday. Would like to take her someplace fun for lunch. She's not a foodie by any stretch of the imagination. Thinking maybe Pink's and then Sprinkles for a cupcake, because these are places she has seen on tv. Any ideas along those lines?

Thanks, folks! Great idea, Jazzy, about having her pick something up. My feeble mind never thought of that one.

Late week night dining near FQ

Meeting MrsDD in NOLA and my flight is scheduled to arrive at 12:25 AM Thurs night/Fri morning.. Staying at the JW Marriott, so that puts us at the hotel no earlier than 1:15 to 1:30 AM. Any place within walking distance to get something decent to eat? Obviously, don't need a heavy dinner, but a late night supper would work. Room service at hotel shuts down at midnight. I know I can get something to drink close by...

Late night dining on a Tuesday night

Mrs DD flies in at 2340 and will be hungry. The yakitori place up on 6th St where I took her the last time we did this is now closed. Any suggestions for something good to eat between midnight and one on a Tuesday? Staying at the Marriott Marina, so maybe Basic? There is always Jack in the Box and Rudford's, I guess...

Intimate dinner in FQ or CBD

Mrs DD and I will be in NOLA in a couple of weeks. Working across the country from each other, I look forward to quiet time when we see each other. We're not hard core foodies and like small, intimate places with decent food. Think Irene's in NOLA, Gascogne or the old Le Madeleine in NYC. I'm all for Irene's, but I know she likes to try new places. We'll be at the JW Marriott, so walking distance from there would be best. Thanks!

Bull Valley Inn Port Costa

Anyone been to the Bull Valley Inn, lately? Haven't been there in at least 25 years, but always loved the space and food. We'll be in the Bay Area next weekend and I'm wondering if it's worth the drive from downtown SF on a Sunday evening. Or is it even open on Sunday evening?

Lunch stop SFO to Monterey

A search revealed some recs for Chinese in the SFO area, but daughter might balk at that. Wife and daughter arriving SFO at 11 AM on a Friday and we'll be heading to Monterey. Knowing them, they will want something to eat within an hour of landing, so would appreciate some recs in that 101/85/17 corridor. Most other cuisines are fine, or anywhere with a decent cheeseburger...

Waikiki take-out

Thanks, KM. Had Korean from "ME BBQ" in the pink building last night. Good stuff! Maybe Fatty's tonight...

Waikiki take-out

Spending 3 weeks in the Marriott Waikiki for work and looking for take-out. Sometimes go to Wolfgang Puck Express (okay) and last night had a great tuna-avocado sandwich from Ruffage. Any other good take-out places in the Diamond Head end of Waikiki? I'm probably too lazy to walk to Rainbow and getting the car out for that seems a waste of time. I haven't seen any Chinese take out places down that way...

Chablis? Is that a wine?

I realize Maison is not a mecca for foodies, but we like to go there for lunch or brunch when we're in NYC. I like their croque monsieur and my daughter loves the cheeseburger. Anyway, we were there Sunday and the young waiter was obviously very new. Had to keep repeating orders while he wrote, but that's cool. I asked if they had a chablis by the glass and he looked confused, but said he would check. A few minutes later a lady server came to the table asking what I had ordered. When I said I wanted to know if they had a chablis by the glass, she said, "Chablis? Is that wine?" I'm just sayin'...

Downtown on a Friday night

I'll be arriving at the Marriott Financial District about 8:00 PM on a Friday, meeting Mrs DD. Looking for a solid (doesn't have to be foodie-ish) place for dinner. Pretty much anything but Chinese. I'll be traveling all day, so would rather not venture too far afoot. I understand we may have to go to West Village or Chelsea, but that's fine. Would rather stay fairly close to the #1 train. I'm a big fan of Gascogne, but we always go there when we're in town and she may balk. Help? Thanks!

Grand Cafe?

Staying in the Union Square area and looking for a restaurant within walking distance or a short cab ride. Not really locked into the cuisine, just looking for some nice atmosphere and some good food. We don't see each other often and like to maximize our opportunities.

Grand Cafe?

Struck out on my effort to get into Gitane or Cafe Claude for dinner at a decent hour next weekend, so I called my hotel and asked the concierge to have a go at it. He didn't do any better, so he recommended Grand Cafe. I have had a couple of bad experiences with concierge-recommended restaurants in NYC, so I'm a little skeptical. Not much written about GC on this board, so does anyone have an opinion?

San Francisco - romantic with decent food

Mrs DD and I just decided to meet in San Francisco on the weekend before Valentine's Day. Working across the country from each other, the times we get together are special. I'm looking for an intimate place for dinner on Saturday the 12th. We aren't hardcore foodies, so the cuisine is open to just about anything except maybe for Asian. My first choice was Gitane, but they are slammed that night. Any suggestions to help me out? We're staying near Union Square and I would rather leave the car parked. Short taxi ride would be okay, though. Thanks!

Least appetizing food ads?

Currently visiting the Norfolk area and today I saw a billboard ad for Prime Rib at WaWa, which is a regional gas station/convenience store. Just doesn't sound too appetizing to me...

Downtown dinner for 12, some kids

Going to NYC early Dec with wife and some of her dance students. Staying in the Marriott downtown. Wife and I will get our Gascogne fix one night, but at least one night I will be expected to come up with a fun place with decent food for dinner for everyone. So, I'm thinking red sauce Italian in Little Italy. I know most CHers don't like or recommend Little Italy, but this is a group of tourists, not foodies. And 6 of the 12 are 11-12 YO girls.

Anyone have a good idea for me? I'm not locked into Little Italy, just thought it would work. Thanks!
