Weekend in Boston

oo.. thanks for the clarification. We will be going to the airport directly from Durgin Park. Blue line it is!

Weekend in Boston

Excellent - i'll look out for those chinatown digs. Hopefully Hei La Moon isn't packed :D Thanks!

Weekend in Boston

Thanks everyone! We're really excited...we'll be heading to Charlies Sandwich Shoppe at 7:30 Saturday for breakfast then lunch at Parish Cafe and dinner at Neptune Oyster - possibility for ice cream at Toscanini's or a pastry at Maria's.

We'll be sleeping in slightly Sunday as we'll have to rise early Saturday. perhaps dim sum in chinatown and then a walk around the areas we might not have gotten to on Saturday, Lunch and Indian pudding at Durgin Park and then off to the airport. By the way - does the T take you to the airport?

will report back after our trip...

Weekend in Boston

thanks for the responses so far. I think i've made some additional decisions.

saturday:
- breakfast at Charlies Sandwich Shoppe (how far is the walk from the hotel?) then off to the Prudential Center for the duck boat tour
- lunch - undecided - hopefully something along newbery street on the walk to see beacon hill, boston common, faneuil hall
- dinner at neptune oyster and then perhaps a stroll through chinatown and perhaps the waterfront before calling it a night

Sunday:
- breakfast and lunch still undecided but want to see the freedom trail and north end before leaving for the airport @ 4:30. any good eats here? we will probably check out Durgin Park for the Indian pudding right before heading to the airport.

how does this sound? does it sound like we're doing too much? too little? am i missing a must see/do? any other ideas for a more efficient trip?

Weekend in Boston

The boyfriend and I are headed for a weekend getaway from NYC to Boston. Neither one of us has really been to Boston before so we're excited about exploring the city. We won't have a car and basically want to relax, stroll and see the sights. We'll be arriving Friday evening (8:30pm) and staying at the Intercontinental in Downtown and leaving Sunday 4pm.

I've searched Chowhound and it seems that we'll definitely have dinner at Neptune Oyster and then dessert at Modern on Saturday night. That leaves quite a few meals up in the air.

We're also unsure about how best to see/eat the city in the most efficient way beyond taking the Duck Boat tour Saturday morning.

Any itinerary suggestions as well as where to have a late dinner Friday after we land, breakfast saturday and sunday and lunch saturday and sunday? We may also need a late afternoon snack before we head to the airport on sunday.

we're pretty much up for anything from street food to high-end as long as it's yummy and we can't get it in NYC.

Thanks!

Food in Williamsburg

oo.. that chicken and guac dish sounds yummy!

Thanks - will definitely report back next week after i move in :)

Food in Williamsburg

Thanks! I'll definitely give these a try.

btw - Ida Red - the locations that you provided are great! I really appreciate it.

Weekday Celebratory Lunch...right pick?

so I've made the reservations for this Wednesday. Couldn't find an up-to-date menu anywhere.

We're eating in the formal room...anything we must try and/or avoid?

Food in Williamsburg

thanks - tried searching earlier but the posts were very difficult to sort through. The posts that came up seemed older (pre-2006) and considering the speed of change, I figured I'd ask.

I'll try again..

fyi - will be off of the Bedford Ave stop on the L.

Thanks.

Food in Williamsburg

I'll be apartment sitting in Williamsburg for 2 weeks. Since I've never lived in the area and the last time I ate there was about 2 years ago (only been to Planet Thai, Sea and Chimu), I'm extremely clueless about the foodie scene. I'm familiar with the city and flushing but am at a total loss when it comes to brooklyn so I'd love to hear some of your favorites.

I'll be at work during the weekday so I'm really looking for weeknight dinners and weekend breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner. Are there any must- trys in the area? If you provide a few suggestions along with price ranges and cuisine types and dish reccs, that would be great.

Thanks!

Mosco Pizza

no worries - it's across the street from the dumpling place. last I checked, still wasnt open.

Weekday Celebratory Lunch...right pick?

excellent! i feel much better now.. thanks! :)

Weekday Celebratory Lunch...right pick?

looking for a place to have a nice tasting/prix fixe menu lunch after graduation ceremony on May 9th. A place that takes reservations 2:30 or later would be necessary. At the moment, leaning toward Jean Georges but also have Le Bernardin and Gramercy Tavern floating in my mind.

I work in brooklyn so I never get the chance to take advantage of the high-end lunch meals in the city..want to take advantage of my day off and the occassion.

Been to Bouley and have dinner reservations at EMP the week after so would prefer to try someplace new.

Is JG the right pick?

$300 to spend

Thanks for the responses. After much internal debate between Cru, Le Bernardin, Jean Georges and EMP, I've decided on EMP. 5/12 is the date.

let's hope I don't change my before then :)

Thanks!

on dinner in manhattan. Looking for a place with first and foremost, excellent food. good service, not stuffy and if possible, romantic.

i'm a fish and vegetable lover; bf is a meat, foie gras and cheese lover. a place with a prix fixe that will suit us both would work.

we're not big drinkers so probably no wine necessary. we've been to la grenouille, bouley, morimoto's and veritas in the past.

...o, and hopefully a place with a possible slot for this coming weekend. can anyone help?

Forgotten restaurants of Chinatown

Danny Ng is my favorite place.

You definitely have to give it another try. They're famous for their prime rib with spinach dish - everyone that I have taken to the rest. raves about it. If you like pea shoots, they have a good one in a soupy broth.

restaurants with yuba (tofu skin)?

I love the curry broth noodles at Jaya on Baxter - it's across the street from vietnamese row.

Las Vegas - Food Itinerary suggestions

Hi - Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions so far..

let me add a bit more detail... we're chinese and from new york, so we'd probably not do the chinese food thing as we have it almost every day (thanks for your recommendation though sfslinky!- we'll definitely do that custard place though - it sounds heavenly). Okada sounds good as Japanese is my favorite but being from nyc, we also have access to a lot of japanese restaurants - does anyone know how Okada compares - is it like Nobu/Morimoto or is it more a sushi/sashimi type of place? Are they open for lunch?

and although we would love to open up another dinner slot by having lotus for lunch one day instead of dinner, we would really prefer not to rent a car for more than one day - we're trying to stay away from cabs (we'd rather spend the $ on food)

Perhaps we'll do Peppermill on the 10th and load up on enough food to tide us over until our 6pm dinner?

Las Vegas - Food Itinerary suggestions

So I've read about a billion posts on LV. We're headed there 9/9-9/13. I think I've got most of the food plans settled on based on recommendations from the board. Here is what I have so far:

9/10:
breakfast: open
lunch: open
dinner: 6pm at Shintaro (haven't heard a peep about this place on the board but booked as a package with one of our Cirque shows)

9/11:
breakfast: open
lunch: Commanders Palace
dinner: L'Atelier

9/12: rental car day
breakfast: open
lunch: Rosemary's
dinner: Lotus of Siam

I know one of these days we'll head to Bouchon for breakfast (probably on the 10th) - but that still leaves 2 breakfast slots and 1 lunch slot up in the air. We were thinking perhaps either the buffet at Paris or at Bellagio since there are no buffets on our agenda right now...maybe this will go well on the 10th when we have an early dinner - this way maybe we can forgo lunch?

any ideas/suggestions?
TIA!

Foods I can't live without from the Red Hook Fairway

chocolate chip cookies from their bakery - one of the best i've ever had.

Mizu

i love Mizu.. i usually go for their specialty rolls which are pretty inventive. They're amazing and melt in your mouth.

Lunch around Sugar Sweet Sunshine?

thanks for your suggestions everyone!!

The goal heading out was to eat at Dash Dogs (coworker has been wanting to try it)...but being the smart people we were, we didnt take the address with us. so we ended up going to soy (place that i've been meaning to try for ages) and we had a great time. The food was yummy - we started with the hijiki salad (seaweed, tofu, mushrooms), a very nice clean simple taste. i got the spicy tuna with avocado and sushi rice as it was too hot for the ramen w/ vegetables. Just the right amount of tuna and spicy sauce, on top of avocado with the perfect amount of vinegar-y rice .i would definitely go there again. I never would have ended up there today if I didnt catch wleatherette's post before we left.

i got my little box of cupcakes for dessert tonight - 3 pumpkin and 1 bob (and one ooey gooey in a baggie for now).

I am satisfied. *ahh

Lunch around Sugar Sweet Sunshine?

oo..let me see if I can get a menu off menupages for the restaurant.

as for the banana pudding - i agree it's delicious.. i might have to get one too..and those yumyum bars.. but i've been seriously craving their pumpkin cupcakes.

can you tell i have a sweet tooth?

Thanks for the reco!

Lunch around Sugar Sweet Sunshine?

heading to sugar sweet sunshine to satisfy my cupcake craving today. Any suggestions for a quick but yummy lunch around the area? Will have to head back to work after.

Thanks!

Midtown drinks & food

Hi,

Coworker is getting hitched. We're looking for a private room - cuz we're loud and rowdy - for about 10-15 people at a fun restaurant with good food and lots of fun drinks (margaritas, mojitos, daquaris, etc).

Does anyone have suggestions for a place in the midtown area - nearby or on the way to Penn Station? We're doing this midweek - so transportation home is a concern.

TIA!

One Girl Cookies - Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

A coworker of mine turned me onto the place as she lives in the neighborhood. I loved the place and have gone back numerous times. The cookies, brownies and whooopie pies (pumpkin cake w/ cream cheese frosting filling) are so good!!

HOWEVER - The past few times I went back, I realized that they have been cheating me. The cookies are $2 for 4, $3 for 6 and $4 for 8. Anything above that is by weight only. One would think that the more you buy (bulk), the cheaper it would be. This is NOT the case. The last time I went, it cost me an extra $2 because I bought more than 8 cookies, than it would have cost if I bought them individually - As if the tiny tiny cookies were not expensive enough!! Unfortunately, I did not realize until after I had paid and left. When I griped to my coworker - she said the same thing happened to her. Although friendly, the people behind the counter don't seem to care at all about this when the issue is raised. They just shrug it off.

Today, I went back for the whoopie pie (I vowed no longer to get ripped off on the cookies) which I so loved. Not only did they shrink 50% in size, the price went up 25%!!!!

That said, I will no longer be frequenting One Girl Cookies after being (rather, feeling) cheated one too many times - they are not *that* good.

If you do decide to go, get no more than 8 cookies at a time, and if you are going to get more than 8 cookies - get the light (in weight) ones.
