Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY Thread - July 2015 [Old]

Yay to the carnitas! Seared on all sides, shredded, then returned to the pan with some beer and a few extra shakes of taco spice. I served these with the corn/flour tortillas, which are also good. I like that the tortillas have enough flour to keep them pliable but mostly taste like corn tortillas.

Tonight we are having leftover carnitas meat with mango chunks too!

Strange Texture for St. Andre

Hello cheese lovers!

While it isn't a SUPER fancy/expensive cheese it is still a treat for me to get to buy my favorite cheese, called Saint Andre, a triple-creme buttery wonderfood.

The last time I bought it (within expiration date) from Trader Joes it tasted... strange. Not awful. Just weird. The outside was fine, the normal powdery rind and luscious texture near the rind. However on the interior it was kind of drier and almost crumbly, and more pungent (almost tangy and goaty? if that makes sense.) I served this cheese for year and years at a wine bar I worked for and it was ALWAYS creamy all the way through.... Hmm.

I saw another wheel being sold at costco and the same crumbly thing seemed to be happening! Is this a new trend for St. Andre or did they just have a few bad wheels? Thank you for your advice.

PS. I would have returned it, but it was the middle of the night and my cheese craving got the better of me and I still ate it all....

Favorite easy, healthy, seafood dished

I hope you're loving florida! I love simple fish- chop up some small baby peppers, shallots, and halve some grape tomatoes. Splash of olive oil. Throw in a foil packet with a light white fish and throw on the BBQ. Can't get any easier!

"It's Too Big" -- And Other Bizarre Restaurant Complaints

May I suggest the jellyfish then? ;)

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - June 2014 [OLD]

As an only occasional poster I'm so happy to get to participate in this post! I went to TJs and actually shopped for the first time recently! (im from FL but have recently moved to Oregon.)

YAY:
canned Cuban black beans: a have a bit of a salt-tooth. So delicious.... makes me feel like I'm back in FL eating some Cuban-inspired food.

Plaintain chips- " " ditto above.

chocolate/turbinado cugar/sea salt almonds- holy smokes....get these away from me! I eat the whole package.

The fruit and nut gluten free granola- I'm not even GF and this stuff is delicious! I think its a copy-cat or just repackaging of the udis granola which I love but can't find on the west coast.

pepper jelly- <333 served over cream cheese as suggested.

NAY-
packaged heirloom baby tomatoes- just....no. hard as rocks and just about as flavorful.
corn on the cob- very very starchy. Could be a fluke though.
