99 ranch market in hollywood (sunset/western) is closing

don't recall ever seeing a 99c ranch market in Hollywood.

99 ranch markets are in heavy Asian populated areas (mainly SGValley). Stores like the new Target make more sense for the Hollywood population.

A Week of Eating Alone at LA's Best Restaurants

Try casual EuroPane Cafe in Pasadena for pastries & coffee, good sandwiches & soup. Owner is Paris trained pastry chef & at least weekly is shopping the farmers mkts. Eating solo is common & comfortable there. NY Times recently said it's one of the places to visit when in Pasadena.

Cafes de Artists? Any ideas?

Ok, here we go: an artist friend is visiting L.A. area for a few weeks. He wants to check out the cafes & coffedhouses where our creative types hang out. So, where are our Cafe de Flore, Brasserie Lipp and Les Deux Magots?
Or, at least the next best thing!

Metropolitan Cafe in Pasadena

I passed by a couple days last week. Lights were on & look liked 1 of the the owners was inside. Their "stuff" appears to be still inside. But still closed.

Evicted huh? I guess they couldn't meet their lease.
It figures. A large space on expensive Colorado, money invested. How could they support their exps & make a profit by basically just selling coffee & tea. The non-drink menu was very limited & just average.
Nice people but maybe no previous hospitality experience.

Europane Musts?

slack, the 'tude is all but gone. The service is about as good as I can remember! Their best girl works M-F. The weekend? Well, then it's basically busy 24/7.

ThaiTalian in Pasadena closes...

Well, good mgmt exeperience recognizes that what works for one location may not do it for another. And, marketing (being found out) is a fundamental. You don't take anything for granted--you only want to know that you tried to do the right things and if it fails, then that sometimes happens.
In locations like 4 this Thaitalitian, I would advise the investors in the planning stage the poor history of prior businesses there. Try to contact the previous businesses & see what were their problems. That's just for starters.
But, owning a restaurant sound so much nicer than the reality of OPERATING a restaurant.

Good gazpacho?

D, I love the Gaspatch over at Bloom Cafe on W.Pico in L.A. I don't think there's much tomato in it compared to other GO's. Give them a ring to ask about it. They tend to be organic, so it may also be organic. The Soba salad is really good too!

Well, I'm just down the block from Daisy Mint-pass it all the time-but always wanted to pass into it. I don't think this board has one negative review of DM yet!
That's a rarity.
So, I guess I gotta finally ck it out soon. With my luck I'll be the one exception on this board but prayerfully not.

ThaiTalian in Pasadena closes...

In Old Town it's the high rents and competition that kills many of these restaurants. Plus, indie rests aren't as experienced managerially as the franchises. Higher & higher energy & food costs can be a death sentence today. When they plan these restaurants they fall in love with their idea and often 4get restaurants are a business where you need to make money by giving your customers what they want.

Pasadena: cheapish, deliciousish, different?

A 2nd for Aun Deli Cafe. Organic, healthy. The owner is a recent transplant from Japan where she cooked also. She doesn't have too much competition from other Japanese rest because her menu is different than most US.Japanese rests.

Cry, thanks for your recommends. Wheatberry is dead, i.e., now closed. I was last there about in May. Love EuroPane, but isn't their breakfast selections very limited? I need to convince Sumi de owner to expand her "breakfast" menu.

Well, I've given up trying to find a board that covers mainly breakfast and brunch in Pasadena. I guess 53,000+ boards wasn't enuf to cover this question. So, my fellow chowhounds your my lifeline. I've tried Yahaira's, Wheatberry (recently closed), Cafe Verde. Any other good recommendations out here from you hounds? Also, can anyone confirm if the 561 Cafe (the Culinary Institue School restaurant) does breadkfast or brunch? Thanks a brunch!

Europane Musts?

The attitude is in the past, and I'm personally thankful 4 that!
The customer service team there now is about as good a group as Sumi de owner has ever had. Let's pray she holds on to them as long as possible.
Maybe even 1 day the service will match the high food quality.

The house coffee is probably the best in Pasadena.
