Must Eat Places in Charleston, S.C. this summer

Will be in Charleston for 3-4 days in July 2014. Would appreciate names of a few must eat places - they don't have to be the most expensive. Looking the for the S.C. dinner experience, best bakery and coffee, and the like.

Many thanks.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Budget $20-30 per person, could be buffet or sit-down. Location can be DTLA, mid-Wilshire, Century City, Westside, possibly Santa Monica.

70-80 people.

Need reasonable $ parking.

Non-Thanksgiving dinner during Thanksgiving day - where to go?

Seasons 52 in Century City or Santa Monica, they will have regular menu and TG menu. They validate, three hours free parking. With Macy's being open on TG, go for it.

Sotto is Salty and Not So Special

Truly! Wrote a very brief review in Oct./Nov. on another site entitled "Pass the Water." Had dinner there w/out of town guest, and it was a very poor choice.

The bread was burned in most places, very bitter, not to mention carcinogenic. The fish - beyond salty. Dining partner's pasta was meh and so was the olive oil cake. Took a few tastings to find a wine I liked - waitress was nice about that.

Staff - nice, but had to flag them down a few times.
Will not be returning.

Juniors Deli is Closing:(

Went there for the pickles as a kid when Pioneer Chicken was across the street. Have been there maybe 15-20 times since then. Loved the revolving dessert case back when, but I won't miss the place in general. RIP Junior's.

Sotto is Spectacular

Tried it once recently with an out of town guest. After reading some of the reviews here, it must have been an off night for Sotto. Service was great, but the appetizer bread was burned, the fish overly salty and dry, the dessert...very meh. The server was very professional and allowed me several tastes of different wines before I found the one that hit the spot.

However, will not be going back, too many other restaurants that don't serve burned salt lick food and bland, boring desserts. We tried.

sammy's woodfire pizza and grill in el segundo

This is a general post on Sammy's, not really a reply to westsidegal, though I read your great posts!

Sammy's originated in San Diego, and is still there. Used to eat at their Torrance location all the time - family in the area - and it was great. It would get crowded on Saturday nights due to movie theaters next door, their good food and service (for the most part), and terrific happy hour.

They moved to El Segundo a year ago this July. Their salads aren't what they used to be, their happy hour is only during the week at an impossible time. The manager in El Segundo said that they have new vendors, etc. Have been getting lots of complaints about the new menu and tasteless food. The only things better at Sammy's than CPK are their bread and sundaes. Hope they don't change those. I can't be bothered to go a little out of my way to go there any more. I was excited about the new Sammy's in Studio City, but the menu and quality are just not the same as in the Torrance place. The owners expanded too quickly and got a little too greedy, and just about everything has gone down hill.

I recently saw an ad (if you are on Sanmmy's email list) that they have gone back to their old menu. I guess they got the drift. Ok, Sammy, hurry up and make it the way it used to be, it WAS a great neighborhood place.

Need restaurant near Century City but not the most expensive restaurants

Toscanova in the CC mall is very nice. Had a delicious Branzino, wonderful calamari (grilled) and arugula salad to start, partner had swordfish carpaccio to start. Wine just fine. Saw some beautiful pizzas and pastas go by. The place was packed on a Saturday night. But the service and food were great. I asked for no oil on the side of steamed spinach, and got just what I asked for. The spinach was really fresh, and plentiful. Not the most expensive place, by far.

I think this is a great go-to place.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Whole Foods makes an awesome vegan ( you would never know it) cc cookie for $1.89 - in their baked goods self-serve case.

Also, Literati had an amazing cc cookie awhile back, have not been there for about 6 mos, but incredible. Price: under $3.

Fig & Olive - has anyone been?

Had dinner there in November. Was fun, vibe great, waiter very attentive. Branzino delicious, carrot soup excellent, apple tart, lovely, wine choices ok. Dining companion had the ravioli...pasta is not their forte. Overall, really nice.

Tried to go back there for our firm holiday party, but they would not allow kosher meals to be brought in. We had our firm holiday dinner again at Spago. Spago has a small kosher kitchen, but they allowed meals to be brought in from favored kosher restaurants, anyway. Fig & Oilve said it was against the law.
