dinner inexpensive around 44th and 6th ave.

Utsav Indian on 46th bet 6th/7th. Well crafted fresh Indian cuisine.
St Andrew's Scottish Pub 44th bet 6th/7th. Surprisingly good dinners, relaxed but attentive service, great beer list. Be sure to get seated in the back.
BXL Cafe 43rd bet 6th/7th. Belgian beer bar with a great Belgian menu and daily specials. A gem for the neighborhood.
Akdeniz 45th bet 5th/6th. Well prepared, cravable Turkish cuisine. Another neighborhood bright spot.

Figaro is fine, but nothing special just Italian cuisine. It is a solid low price option in the area.

Il Passatore - New Williamsburg Italian

We live in the neighborhood and have been several times for dinner and enjoy it very much. It's an excellent value and the staff are so friendly and attentive. We recently did brunch for six and the egg dishes were quite good. A salad and a pasta makes a great lunch.

Lunch near Rockafeller Center

I'll second Akdeniz. The food is very fresh and the service is fast. Also Utsav on 46th/6th for a fresh Indian lunch buffet in a nice setting.

NYC-unique gifts

Eli's does amazing food gifts. (Unfortunately, all but the bread basket bottom out at $100 each.)

Favorite Vegetarian

Candle Cafe and Candle 79 are reliably good.

Upper East Side suggestions

I was going to recommend Ian on 86th/2nd but realized it closed on June 27. How sad! We had an excellent experience there in the spring.

Cafe D'Alsace 88th/2nd is a solid choice, as is Spigolo on 81st/2nd.

Good corporate dinner for 35-40?

I second Metrazur.

I'm going to Mercadito tonight. What's good?

Cucumber margarita
Guac tasting
Baja tacos

They have some other fish tacos with huitlacoche that are to die for.

Quenelles de Brochet

Cafe D'Alsace serves them as well, and they are tasty.

Harlem? Does anyone eat uptown?

We finally visited Revival this week. It's a bistro on 127th/Fred Douglas. I've tried most establishments in the neighborhood, Sylvias, Amy Ruths, Spoonbread, Ginger, Native, Bayou (We miss it since it moved from Lenox to 109/Broadway), Mo-Bay, etc. Revival is a bit more unique than most of the "soul food" places dotting the area. Decor is nice, service pleasant. Menu is interesting and it recommends wine pairings with each dish which was a nice touch. And almost every wine is sold by the glass at reasonable prices.

Had the cornbread mushroom app which was bizarre but very tasty. Mains were just OK. We both had fish dishes that would have benefitted greatly from a little less fussing with flavors and sauces.

Would definitely go back to the bar for happy hour and snacks, and maybe dinner again to try something with less sauce.

Best place we have found is Taste of Seafood on 125th/Madison. Just get the all fish meal. Take it home and serve immediately with salad or other greens. Fantastic.

nyc with kids

I second John's Pizza (Midtown outlet is a little more comfortable) and of course Seredipity
Bubby's in Tribeca

Bread Tribeca - fantastic experience!

I had lunch there recently and was quite pleased. Great fresh bread, efficient service, fresh panini. The orange slices in the water were a memorable touch. Would definitely return.

Greenmarket prices

I hear you. The $4.85 organic english cucumber sitting in my crisper (also from Union Square) better be the best one I ever ate in my life! But I suppose it's just the cost of growing local.
