hi again!

i know in my OP i asked for non-italian recs - but plans have changed and we may want a delicious italian feast anyway! do you guys have any recs for me?

(liked scarpetta but now there's one in la, did NOT have a good meal at osteria morini, and have been to the batali restaurants in vegas many times and love them - are there any that are different?! we're also planning on going to eataly for lunch one day...)

thank you!

any recommendations of what to order there - or at otto on the following night?

thanks for all the responses so far! thanks to you guys i checked out txikito - i made a reservation for wednesday night.

now for monday - im considering the dutch, fatty cue, or fatty crab. thoughts on those?

if it helps, in los angeles my favorite restaurant is animal, hands down. and some restaurants in new york that ive been to and enjoyed are pippa, abc kitchen, balaboosta, perilla, kin shop, momofuko noodle shop.... on my last trip i went to osteria morini but was not a fan.

thanks!

Hi yall - this LA hound needs your expertise!

I'm starting to make reservations for my trip to NY in early April. My boyfriend and I will be in the city for three nights - one night we're meeting friends at Otto so we need two other reservations, one for a Monday night and one for a Wednesday night.

We are staying in Union Square but will cab or subway anywhere. I'd like to keep both meals under $150 total each night - just food (we don't drink.)

I'd prefer non-Italian recs - would love upscale Asian but not sushi, Greek, American, Tapas, or anything exciting!

Barring that - thoughts on any of the following would be appreciated: Tertulia, Flex Mussels, John Dory Oyster Bar, Alta, Co-op, The Dutch, Marc Forgione, Fatty Cue?

Sorry for all the info! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Do you order take away from restaurants that you would never actually eat at?

I refuse to actually eat INSIDE Chang's in Brentwood (that empty tank freaks me out), but when I want Chinese food delivered it's the only place I turn to. That Sesame Shrimp? MMMM!

Dinner on La Cienega - help!

hi friends,

im looking for a restaurant for dinner this thursday evening. my boyfriend and i are seeing a show at the largo on la cienega and i am in charge of picking where we eat beforehand!

id like to spend no more than $75 for the two of us, so nothing too fancy. we probably won't be drinking anything fancy - he might get a beer but i don't drink so thats not too important.

i was thinking maybe mezze - which i liked but didnt love - or eveleigh? the closer to la cienega the better. we basically eat anything but i was thinking tapas or small plates could be fun to share.

any ideas? thanks in advance!

Taking a friend to Vegas - she's never been!

Hi all!

Hope you can help me out! I'm a Vegas "regular" -- fly in about 8 times a year from Los Angeles.
I'm meeting a friend from Texas there at the end of the month - she's never been, and I want to show her a good time. There are many, many places I already know and love, but I'd like to also try something new if possible.

I would love to get some recommendations for both Wednesday and Thursday night dinner options for the following:

- sushi
- steak (Craftsteak is my favorite, but I'm open to new places)
- seafood (I was not wowed by Aquaknox)
- italian
- other kinds of asian/fusion

We're staying at the Palazzo, and would prefer to spend about $75-$100 per person each night, drinks not included.

Thanks so much in advance!

New "it" spots in Century City/Brentwood/Santa Monica/Venice

Tavern in Brentwood? Riva with the new tasting menu in Santa Monica?

Delicious in Newport?

Hi CH,

My parents recently bought a beach house in Newport Beach, right off Newport Boulevard, near PCH. I was hoping yall might have some delicious recommendations for restaurants in and around the area, especially:

- breakfast spots
- sushi
- seafood
- a few fancy dinner places?

Thanks in advance!

Sensuous, Luscious and Sexy! The Voluptuous Dishes of Animal [Review] w/ Pics!

based on your review, exilekiss, i dragged my friend back to animal last night. we decided to split 4 appetizers -- the poutine, the sweetbreads, the petite basque, and a lambs neck/goat cheese ravioli. the poutine was phenomenal - id never had it before and i fell in love. the sweetbreads were phenomenal (i loved the brown butter/caper sauce), and the petit basque, which ive had before, was great also. i didnt like the ravioli -- im a big fan of goat cheese and i felt the lamb's gaminess totally overwhelmed the cheese and the delicate pasta (which had a beautiful texture).

our servers were fabulous -- came over to chat with us several times about food and other things as well! total bill (after chocolate bacon bar = very good, VERY rich) was $66. cant wait to go back.

They Want Meat!

My friend is celebrating her first anniversary with her husband, a die-hard carnivore. He has requested a place that serves steak -- this could be a steakhouse, or a restaurant known for a delicious steak dish.

They live in Culver City, but will happily travel to Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, Brentwood, Beverly Hills, Westwood, or Malibu.

Any ideas or suggestions? THANKS!

Back to Cecconi's tonight... I'm nervous.

so after a fairly awful dinner at cecconis a few weeks after they opened, i am being dragged back. i'm not so excited about this, so i figured i'd turn to CH to help me out.

last time, i ordered the octopus ap and the baked gnocci... both decent but not great, and the service was awful - hence me not really wanting to go back.

anyone have anything there that rocked? im looking at the menu now... im kinda interested in the calamari, the burrata, the chicken paillard or the eggplant parm -- thoughts? also, how are the pizzas?

thanks yall!

Dinner for Bachelorette Party

i threw a bachelorette party at lola's right around there last year ... they were really helpful and made a set menu for us to keep the price down low. everyone LOVED the martinis!

Italian that took over Mortons?

its called cecconis... it is an offshoot of the london restaurant of the same name.

search the boards -- lots of people have posted. my personal opinion is that while, yes, it is good, the service was abysmal. it took two hours for two people eating two plates of pasta.

Magnolia in Hollywood?

Hi CH --

What information can yall give me on Magnolia in Hollywood?

I am going to see a show at the Pantages on Friday night and looked through some boards and saw this...

It's still open, right? Is it walking distance to the theatre? And most importantly, how's the food? What do yall like there?

Thanks in advance!

Shamshiri - WORST SERVICE EVER

i was also there with my parents that night... how strange! my service was not great, but it was fine. the weirdest thing was how the waitress and the busboy kept slamming down the dishes and drinks. everytime they put something down on the table, it made a huge noise.

that being said, i did enjoy the food. i will be back, but if my service is bad, ive been warned!

Restaurants with "Rules"

still open and still has the rule! i graduated a year ago :) bear down!

Pizzeria Mozza TONIGHT for my FIRST TIME! (so let's play a game!)

CH – I need you! I just got a reservation for Pizzeria Mozza TONIGHT. While I’ve never been, I’ve been drooling over all your reviews for the past two years or so and now, in my time of need, I’m calling on you for help!

So let’s play a game. EVERYTHING on the menu looks good to me and obviously, I can’t order it all (I wish), so instead, how about you choose for me?

To start: fried squash blossoms, Mozza caprese, OR mussels al forno?

A pizza for me: goat cheese/bacon, clam/garlic, OR squash blossom/burrata?

A pizza for my friend (she has what I like to call “white bread tastebuds”): margarita OR Bianca?

Dessert: butterscotch buddino OR caramel copetta?

Feel free to suggest any other things you think I should try. Thanks in advance! I’ll let you all know how it goes!

Accommodating Kosher Diet for Office Holiday Lunch?

if you stopped by this year on july 4th, they were closed because it was shabbat, the jewish day of rest. july 4th fell on a friday this year.

BARNEY GREENGRASS: EXPENSIVE, NOT IMPRESSIVE

i have brunch on my birthday here... i think its a great place for a celebration blow out! maybe he had an off day? i've never had anything except amazing breakfasts and brunches here. id still recommend it for a celebration blow out!

Casual Seafood in L.A.

i second this! malibu seafood is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. get the shrimp or squid sandwich, clam chowder, steamed clams... actually, everything is good!

Fab Hot Dogs--mini report

just wanted to put my two cents in -- i dragged my parents here yesterday. my mom and i had manhattan dogs -- they were great and had a delicious snap/crunch to them. my dad, a notoriously picky eater, ate every bite of his chilli dog, so i guess that means it was good!

oh, and i want to join the tot debate -- i loved them! deliciously crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. mine were flecked with pepper and i added a little bit of salt... MMM!

3 hot dogs + 2 orders of tots + 3 cans of soda = $17

Soup is good food!

joans on third has great fresh soup every day. my favorite is the butternut squash!

if you log onto their website and click daily specials, it will tell you what kinds they're offering that day.

Fun Bday restaurant thats also a bar/club scene?

i also recommend the belmont -- i have been to several birthday parties there where a group of about 10-15 have dinner there, and everyone comes afterwards to drink and spend the night at their bar. its always very fun.

their french fries are delicious!

trendy but not too expensive

i took two teenager to ketchup... even they thought it was disgusting. please spare the girls!

sushi roku on ocean came to mind.. not my favorite for sushi but definitely a hollywood scee, as i've seen celebrities there a few times. they have options that aren't sushi on the menu as well.

i've also seen celebs at Bandera on Wilshire and Barrington - i know it's a chain but i do enjoy their food, and if you take the girls on a thursday, friday, or saturday night, it's definitely a scene.

Sushi. Tonight. Help!

Some relatives came into town today unexpectedly and want to go for sushi tonight. I know there are a ton of topics on this, but I’m in a jam and don’t have time to search properly, so I know you all can point me in the right direction!

I guess we’d like to spend around $50 a person, and some of us are adventurous sushi eaters while some aren’t. I would love to make a reservation, too, so a place that takes them would be helpful. I’m open to Culver City, Brentwood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills… help! Thanks in advance!

Looking for a chill bar to show around to some NYers

id try bar lubitsch in west hollywood. very chill, great drinks (lots of different kinds of vodka), its in a good area but in my experience it never gets too loud. have fun!
