Kampala
Emin Pasha is nice, but the absolute highlight so far has been the pork joints. WOW. love love love pork cooked over fired w avocado and diced red onion+tomato. lots of local people eating at the pork joints and drinking beer. this page has a decent list:
http://www.inkampala.com/kampala-pork-joints/
we tried deep blue, and the cave like places across from deep blue, we also tried Rise&Shine and Rhino in Makindye. At Rhinoe we also had pig ears and deep fried pork ribs. but the sticks of pork are the best.
Also on the way to Jinja there is some great goat on a stick and also checken on a stick. so far any food on sticks has been pretty good.
johannesburg - modern vibrant restaurant
I think Melville is the place - live music, good music - start at Lucky Bean and then wander on to Sophiatown. vibrant neighborhood around 7th st and 4th ave.
Restaurant recommendations in Johannesburg?
We ended up in Melville and I liked it a lot - ate at Melon, Lucky Bean, Xia Xia, Cafe de la Creme - I'd go back to any of them.
Kampala
thanks, we had the thai food at metropole the night we arrived and were surprised how good it was. we ordered spicy and it was spicy! next night we tried Casablanca. the food took forever! we ordered ethiopian food (or abyssinian) and it was good. We also had a paper dosa at garden city food court and it was ok. then today we had a mediocre/bad lunch at Javas (dont know why any of us though food at a petrol station would be good). 1000 cups of coffee has good coffee, no wifi though.
will definitely try your suggestions - thank you so much. I am loving the wild and crazy Kampala.
Looking for southern Tassie recommendations
yes, Garagistes. the food at the MONA restaurant was beautiful and the setting stunning, I myself might choose Monty's instead - food is also great there and it is a very friendly cosy setting - plus walking distance if you are staying in Hobart. You do have to book though. The New Sydney is completely different - I liked it, better than your average pub food. A german chef - I liked the mains a lot, the dessert was a little too deconstructed for my taste. I think it would be an enjoyable low key lunch, not super gourmet, but good.
In Huon Valley I like the red velvet lounge and on Bruny I loved the Get Shucked Oysters and the bread and cheese at Bruny Island cheese. I miss the oysters, wish I could have more.
in Hobart I really like the pecan sticky bun at Sweet Envy in North Hobart. they have great ice cream too. I also like Jackman McRoss in the battery pt location. and the bread from summer kitchen at salamanca mkt. oh and Pigeon Hole does a limited menu, but it is delicious. and A Common Ground down at Salamanca (but a full time store, not just at the market). I liked the Saturday market and the smaller Sunday market.
take some warm clothing.

any other suggestions? any South African food we shouldn't miss?
Various Spots in Perth
ahh, Pata Negra was in the newspaper recently because someone objected to the $55 price tag for suckling pig. the pigs are apparently flown in from Victoria.
Various Spots in Perth
new favorite cbd coffee: Zekka. good people, great coffee. 76 king st.
Also really enjoyed Harvest down in N Freo. Plan to check out Andaluz this weekend.
Six days in Melbourne
here is a nice summary of the best coffees in Melbourne

Six days in Melbourne
so much good coffee - really try them all - some favorites -almost too much to say just about coffee
brother baba budan-important in the overall relationships of great espresso in Melb
cup of truth-we love the friendliness of this place, but you have to go a few times, it is underground, in the degraves subway near the city library, standing room only
seven seeds- up near victoria market, more breakfasty and sit awhile sort of place, and great coffee
dead man espresso - either a walk or a tram ride, out of the way, but good breakfast and great coffee, good vibe
st ali - one of the motherships, also slightly out of cbd, but one of the pillars
also a tram ride, but worth it: Proud Marys - maybe my favorite - but I also love Three Bags Full - they are both great food and fantastic espresso.
(who do you love in SF? I love BB in Linden)
as for craft beer (you sound like you like the same things I do) - I think Josie Bones has the best list of craft beers. get on the 86 tram. they have a stunning selection of beer and also great offal. I think I've written about it. We like hoppy IPAs and Josie Bones always has a few we've never tried before.
if you want to buy some beer to have in yr hotel room check out Purvis Beer on Bridge Rd, plus they are good people there and can tell you which pubs have good beer.
also not a bakery exactly, but I like to hang out at brunetti and eat italian pastries and watch the people go by, there is one in the cbd, but it isn't as satisfying. transit will get you everywhere. Melbourne has my favorite transit of any australian city.
Hobart choices and Tasmania help Please add too
oh and for comparison sake maybe try the jackman mcross bakery in battery point. they are good, but I would still choose the pecan sticky bun of sweet envy over anything at JM
Hobart choices and Tasmania help Please add too
oh yes, I had no car. North Hobart is walkable, but I usually took the bus. you catch the bus in front of the GPO (big post office, center of town w clock tower) on Elizabeth st, once you go past the republic pub on the right, press the button and get off at the next stop and Sweet Envy is across the street. it is great to talk w the owners if you can - they have travelled a lot. sadly, the coffee there is not good, if you want the best coffee stop in Pilgrim first and say hi to Will and Tyler - they are very friendly and care a lot about coffee. North Hobart is a nice little neighborhood.
Greenhouse, The Walk, Cullen Restaurant, Wineries - [Perth, Subiaco, Margaret River]
I like the Subiaco market on fri-sat-sun for fruit and veg - good prices and very fresh produce. place is packed. also love the petit four at la galette de france which is also at the market.
Hobart choices and Tasmania help Please add too
You could eat right at Henry Jones - not cheap - but sure convenient. I like Black Cow up in Launy. Eat some Cape Grim beef - it is delicious. I never made it to Lebrinas - it was closed every time I called. Also try a pecan sticky bun and salted caramel almond ice cream at Sweet Envy in North Hobart. I love Garagistes.
Ordering a coffee in Australia
I'm in Perth now and the whole "topped up short mac" thing is irritating! does not seem to happen anywhere else in Australia and I have to remember to say traditional or I end up w a latte. And even w traditional, I often get too much milk. Zekka is my current favorite, _love_ zekka. and Elixir. And Dancing Goat. but, finding fantastic espresso on a Sunday is a real challenge, not to be found in the cbd, we went to Victoria Park to a place called The Imp for coffee this morning. they use fiori beans and bannister downs milk and it is good. and there is breakfast too.
Perth Restaurant and Wine Shop Suggestions
We had dinner at Harvest in N Freo last night and it was excellent. I really liked it - lamb brains, raw veal, and some great fish - full review and photos are here:
http://blog.edgeplay.org/2012/02/harvest-restaurant.html
I had a glass of a white spanish wine that was elegant and spare. I made a booking earlier in the day - the place does fill up. The service was friendly and fast and personal. I will go again. the menu is online and I thought it was very creative.
Greenhouse, The Walk, Cullen Restaurant, Wineries - [Perth, Subiaco, Margaret River]
any suggestions for MR besides Knee Deep and Cullen? any great bakeries near there? great chocolate? We are leaving tomorrow after work.
Various Spots in Perth
ok, more coffee research has been done and my favorite in the city is currently Ristretto, in part because it is great coffee, but also because they care so much and make an effort to be friendly. Today we went out to Elixir which was very good. We also went to Dancing Goat and the Daily which were also quite good. And we have a list of other places to try.
Epic was ok, but too many people working the machines and it wasn't the level of fanatic and friendly that I love.
Also found a good butcher in Swanbourne and a nice grocery store there too.
Mondo Butcher farmers mkt only runs sept-dec
Perth Restaurant and Wine Shop Suggestions
I agree w you about LC food, do not need to go back there. Perth does have an amazing beerstore- International Beer Store - the selection is stunning.
Hobart Tasmania Lunch ideas
oh also in Salamanca check out A Common Ground - great salami and other treats
Hobart Tasmania Lunch ideas
I also like Ethos, Smolt, and Pigeonhole. Tasmania has great fresh produce, wonderful pinot noirs, some great steak from cape grim. also some great local scallops. Pigeonhole is very small w limited choices, but they have great bread. Sweet Envy is a great bakery and Jackman McRoss is also good. Pilgrim Coffee is the best coffee, Yellow Bernard is also good and Villino.
If you are in Salamanca check out wursthus and dr coffee and tricycle cafe.
Hobart Tasmania Lunch ideas
which day of the week? I would spend the day at MONA and eat at the Source
http://mona.net.au/mona/restaurant/source.aspx
Various Spots in Perth
is it called Hawkers in Chung Wah Lane? I also want to try Bullcreek Hawker. We tried Greenhouse last night - I was very happy to see lamb brain on a menu - and it was good. For a cbd restaurant it seemed reasonable with an interesting menu.
Various Spots in Perth
yeah, the duck place had a line out the door, so we will be cking it out. I think Northbridge is our kind of neighborhood. I'll try Epic Espresso.
Various Spots in Perth
thanks! it does seem clear I have to get out of the CBD. Today I rode the red/blue/yellow cats and I still didn't see to much that looked interesting in terms of shopping. I did stop in Torre butcher and they said if I come back on Weds I can get goat tongues and other unusual meat choices.
Is there any sort of farmers markets during the week?
I'll check out those coffee places. We found great single origin fantastic coffee in Hobart - I thought Perth would have that level - I'll keep searching. Where is the best selection of cheese?
I will check out Phi Yen and the Good Fortune Duck place looked good too.
Various Spots in Perth
I'm in Perth for the next two weeks and looking for suggestions. This morning for coffee I tried Velvet Lounge and Tiger Tiger (I'm staying in the cbd), they were both acceptable short macs, but they weren't choose your own single origin bean - not at the level of Proud Mary or BBB in Melbourne. Where else shall I go for great coffee?
For dinner last night I was very happy with our choice of Tak Chee house on William St in Northbridge - we had 1/2 HainĀanese Chicken, lo-bak and kangkong sambal. It was open on Sunday night, walking distance from the cbd and about $40 for two! Where shall we go next? We have bookings at amuse feb 1 and will go to Little Creatures on the wkend.
I'd also like a gourmet grocery store in the cbd - I found the two woolies, but was hoping for better. I found a place called Herdsmen, but it seems to have closed/gone out of business.
Restaurants in Sydney & other environs
ok, I'll take Hobart. you could read my posts for the long version - here is what I currently love:
Smolt in salamanca
Monty's - not far from Salamanca
Garagistes - I like going early, 5 pm, before they get slammed. no bookings, communal tables
ethos
Coffee:
Pilgrim (on argyle near liverpool, say hi to Will)
Yellow Bernard (not open on wkends, say hi)
Villino
Dr Coffee (salamanca)
go to Mona and then eat at their restaurant Source, take the ferry there
Peppermint Bay
Sweet Envy - pecan sticky bun, go early, opens 830 am and the ice cream
right now there are great cherries, in general the produce is great. try cape grim beef. bruny island oysters. when are you getting here?
I'm happy to help w Hobart questions. If I had a day in Sydney I'd eat laksa and chat thai and Quay if I had the $$$$.
Finger Limes
when I was in Sydney I found them at the fruit shop on Glebe Pt Rd, the one near Bridge Rd. I have not seen them very often.
