Street corner tamales in San Francisco?

There is a woman who sells them out of a cart on the corner of 19th and Florida in the Mission. I have never tried one but there is usually quite a crowd around her. I drive by about 9:30 and see her most days

Restaurants Near Bart in the Mission

I work in the Mission and time was tight. Turns out they were running late and had to cancel. Upon re-reading my original post it does seem that I was unclear on why I wanted the Mission

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Perfect, that sounds easiest.

Thank you again for all of your help!

That doesn't sound weird at all, I actually thought the same thing after posting. Is there someplace to eat that is outside the boarding area? Quality isn't so much of an issue, this is more about being together.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions

Restaurants Near Bart in the Mission

Hi,

My brother and his kids are barting to SFO and want to meet me for dinner. It would have to be close to a BART station, preferably in the Mission as they will have luggage. I am drawing a blank with the addition of the kids. Anyone have any ideas? The kids are picky as well.

Starting to rethink this.......

TIA

Private Dining Room at Flour + Water

All,
I had to post about the wonderful dinner we had in the private dining room at Flour + Water. I didn't even know that they had a private room. It is out the back and up some stairs in a newly acquired space. They do all the plating right in the room and it makes for a very intimate party with the chef explaining each dish as it is served and the sommelier describing each wine as it is poured. The menu is very different from the regular menu, chef said that they have more opportunity to experiment/cook things they cannot do downstairs.

We had 8 courses each of which was better than the next. I didn’t set it up but learned that you can work with the chef to customize it to your liking. We also had a couple of people with dietary restrictions and they were able to accommodate on the fly.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a small, private party. We were 12 people and easily fit around the large table. Not sure how many more would fit.

Sonoma Dives?

Hi,

I am planning a party in Sonoma and the group is not into high end. I can't seem to get an idea of what to do with them. If they had their way the place would have peanuts on the floor! I don't want it to be that much of a dive but someplace that they can let their hair down as it were. Good food would be a plus, they are not animals :) As you might have guessed these are old collage friends, individually they would probably want something high end but as a group........

It would probably have to be a buy out since there are about 30 of us.

Any ideas? I don't really know the area that well.

Thanks!!

Cafe des Amis

I finally made it as well. I met a friend there for brunch on Sunday and have to agree with Bob below, it was great. I had the Nicoise salad and it was not what I would have expected with cooked tuna but it was really nice and the dressing was perfect. My friend had the Croque Madame and pronounced it heavenly. She also had the frisee salad which she shared and it was really good as well. Service was attentive and not overbearing. I can't wait to try dinner and will report back.

Cafe des Amis

Thanks for the heads up!!

Cafe des Amis

I realize this just opened but I was wondering if anyone had tried it yet. I have seen people in there but I am not sure if it is officially open yet. I peeked in the window and it is beautiful so I am wondering if the food matches the decor

Ame as a walk in??

I keep reading about Ame on this board and my friend is coming to town tomorrow. I was thinking I could take her there for dinner and was wondering what would happen if i just walked in on a Saturday night. Has anyone tried that? I am thinking it would be around 8pm

SF - fab restaurants serving great food in the bar

We did this once down by the waterfront. We hit Boulevard for some foie, Waterbar for oysters, Ozumo for sashimi and the ferry building. It is all walking distance. You could also add to the list: Perry's or Epic Roasthouse I am not sure about bar seating at Perry's but I hear Epic has an upstaris bar area. There are probably some I am missing.

Italian in Cow Hollow?

I will admit that it has been a while but when I lived in the area, many years ago, I really enjoyed E'Angelo's. Not sure now, any hounds been there lately?

Aqua chef change

I wonder, considering until recently how thinly he was spread, how much of it was really “his” food. While I am sure he is a wonderful chef, he keeps leaving restaurants in disarray. I went to Aqua on my birthday in March and really enjoyed my experience there. My only beef was with the overpriced wine list. I, personally, would love to see this more of a potential re-birth but only time will tell. It will be interesting to see what transpires.

My friend and I had a fantastic dinner at Conduit on Valencia. You can sit at the counter and watch/chat with the chefs.

Breakfast near Oakland Airport

We had the basics; eggs over easy, I had the chicken apple sausage which I loved, friend had the Niman Ranch ham. Didn't try it but he wolfed it down. Like I said pretty basic stuff but fresh and well prepared. I ordered the biscut....meh...a bit dry. Would like to go back when I have more time to enjoy but lexdevil was not fooling around when it was suggested that we let them know we were trying to catch a plane

Breakfast near Oakland Airport

Thank you for the suggestion; we had a lovely breakfast. BSK was cute and fun and the food fresh and well prepared. My friend loved the coffee and he is very picky so at least I didn't have to listen to him fret about the state of horrible coffee throughout breakfast!

Breakfast near Oakland Airport

coming from SF; we have a conference call at 8am so we leave then but the flight doesn't leave until 10:40. Last time we hit the airport at 8:30

Breakfast near Oakland Airport

Hi All,

I have a flight tomorrow and am looking for a decent breakfast near the airport. I saw a Carrows last time but my partner in crime said no way. I cannot stomach another airport meal and we do have time to do something if it is close by and fairly quick.

Thanks in advance!

Dinner for 30 – Marina District

We had a lovely dinner in the private dining room at Bistro Aix website says it holds up to 30 people. FWIW it is also always on our local critic's top 100 list

http://www.bistroaix.com/

I hear that Izzy's a steak house has a private room but I have no idea how large it is and I have no idea how the food is since I have not been there in years.

Perry's on Union Street also has a back room.

Hope this helps!!

Most places in the area are smaller so 30 is tough.

Nettie's Crab SF

Funny, I heard such mixed things and my girlfriends and I decided to try it anyway. Loved It! Artichoke dip was great; steamers (as noted) were wonderful as was the bread that we used for the sauce. We also had the crab and beet salad that had a nice dressing and a generous amount of crab. We spent two days eating and drinking our way around town and as I dropped my friends off at the airport they thought Nettie’s was the most memorable meal we had. Possibly because we had a late lunch and the place was empty, I don't know why they get such mixed reviews

Freddie's Sandwiches (North Beach), SF - any good?

Excellent sandwiches but beware the place is packed at lunch time. Our office gets lunch here regularly; one swears it is the best egg salad and he considers himself quite the expert. Love the chicken salad myself. Give it a go and let us know what you think.

Feddie, if that is his name, can be quite gruff

Where to eat on vacation in SF

I agree with the Marina suggestion. Try Laiola, fun atmosphere and lovely food. Also has a younger vibe and is near hip bars.

You could also try Range in the Mission; great cocktails and service (at least the time I was there) also around many hip bars but the area is seedier. We spent $180 for two pple but don't go by that; we tend to try everything

Local Roasters

I heard about this on the Gene Burns show Saturday:

www.roastcoffeeco.com

It appears to be new so might be worth checking out. They are the owners of Spruce and supply the coffee to all of thier restaurants. I don't know if they are fair trade or organic.

I do know that the coffee at Spruce is wonderful

Best Seafood in SF

I had a really nice dinner at Anchor and Hope; I even enjoyed the Unagi which I usually don't like but the waiter insisted.......

The presentations were simple but very fresh

Spruce or Gary Danko

Spruce seems to be underserved on this board but I can say my two meals there were fantastic. It is just the right combo of quiet vs ambiance meaning there is a good vibe there but you can still enjoy a nice conversation. Danko is also wonderful but I don't like the area as much. I am local so the wharf area is a bit much for me but you might like it for an after dinner stroll. There is not much happening in the neighborhood that Spruce is located in but the bar there is well stocked with some excellent drinks if that is what you are into.

Your decison will probably be based on where you can get in so call now. Either way I don't think you can go wrong.

Avoid Mina like the plague; I hated my dinner there. My reasoning is that I want to walk out of a restaurant feeling better than when I walked in and Mina failed on that count; it just feels wrong in there somehow and the food did not live up to the hype for me. Can't really put my finger on why but I think it seemed to be too much work to eat there with all the different combos.

Hope this helps

Park City Fine Dining

Hi there,

I am new to this so pardon any errors. I have a business meeting in Park City and have to plan dinner for one night. I need the best of the best and price in no object. I did a search and the posts about Park City are old. Any recs? I have no idea about the area and have one suggestion for Grappa but from what I can find it seems as if it is hit or miss.

We like contemporary cusine in a VERY upscale environment.

Thank you so much for your help!
