Sweden markets and restaurants
A rather splendid lunch -- for tiny amounts of money -- can be had at Nystekt Strömming, an outdoor fish stand on Södermalmstorg, a square close to the McDonald's and the restaurant Gondolen where you cross from Gamla Stan to Södermalm.
It's a rather shabby looking kiosk, but there's a long line every lunchtime for paper plates of herring with potato and lingon berry and mashed potato. Rather unexpectedly it's a member of the Slow Food movement, and it's just smashing. If the day is sunny, it's perfect.
Sweden markets and restaurants
There are three markets in the city -- Östermalm and Hötorget, as mentioned, but also Södermalmshallarna by Medborgarplatsen on Södermalm. It's nowhere near as nice as the first two, but could be handy if you are based on Söder.
I'd head to Hötorget for the fish or Östermalms Saluhall for meat, afterwards popping into Androuet cheese shop on Nybrogatan. Yes, it's French rather than Swedish, but it's outstanding. Pick up bread from Riddarbagariet and you're all set.
Eating in Stockholm, Sweden
At Martins Gröna (Regeringsgatan 91, in the city centre) there's a choice of two very good, very hearty vegetarian dishes, plus home-baked bread, tea or coffee and lingonberry juice for, if I recall correctly, 75kr.
If you really are short of cash look for Gooh!, a fast food place where you can get some meatballs and potato with a side order of lingonberries for 49kr. They are devised in collaboration with the chef at Operakällaren, one of the best restaurants in town, and considering how cheap they are, they're very good. There are various Gooh! outlets: one of the most central is at Norrlandsgatan 15.
