group lunch near north end

What about an early dinner? Any ideas?

Weekend in Harwich- kid free and good food & wine?

We ended up stopping at the Beachmoor in Wareham on the way down for a drink and an appetizer (I couldn't resist, I love that place) and then did dinner at Ocean House. It was unbelievable. I would say one of my favorite restaurants period. We sat in the lounge and we could see the waves lapping on the beach outside our window. Very close quarters, so I don't recommend going if you are claustrophobic or don't like chatting with strangers, but we didn't mind and had a great time. My mother got the $25 three course special and she chose a garden salad, campagnella pasta, and a flourless chocolate cake. I tried a little of everything and they were all delicious! I got the filet mignon with french fries and asparagus... Delicious! We both ate every single bite. It was packed in there but there was a nice lively atmosphere.

Today we had lunch at Friendly Fisherman's in Eastham and the lobster rolls really are addicting. We stopped for ice cream at Schoolhouse in Chatham on the way home- another gem!

I couldn't have done it without my Chow Hound friends- thank you!

Thanks Neil and Luci, Ocean House sounds like the perfect fit for us. I checked out the menu and they even have a $25 Fall 3 Course Dinner special. Thank you!

Weekend in Harwich- kid free and good food & wine?

I am taking my mother to the Cape for the weekend. I have gotten some good insight about lunch spots, fried seafood, pizza and ice cream. But I would like to take her out for a nice waterfront seafood dinner on Friday night. Fried food would be a no-no, I am thinking something like the Beachmoor in Wareham... reasonable prices for the quality, nice view and a good mix of steak, seafood and chicken entrees? We like Amari's but that may be out of the say. We are staying in Harwich so either within 15 minutes away or on the way down. Any suggestions?

Pittsfield/Lenox

I have been to the area three times and can't get away from Arizona Pizza. It is a rustic pub/restaurant but their food is excellent and they have a decent beer list. Everytime I have gone it was right before a Tanglewood show and I had no problem getting a table or a seat at the bar, eating in a timely manner and getting to Tanglewood in time. In fact all three times we had time to kill so got another drink at the bar. The waitstaff are very friendly and if you have to drag along the 2 year old you can get away with it.

ETIQUETTE- who pay's?

So because I am responsible, hard working, and perhaps more financially savy I am the only one who has to pay? Doesn't seem fair to me.... Maybe that is life :(

ETIQUETTE- who pay's?

Perfect! That is the response I was looking for.

ETIQUETTE- who pay's?

I agree, I would like my siblings to chip in or my father to refuse my money. Being the only one chipping in makes me the "nice guy" I guess but irritates me.

ETIQUETTE- who pay's?

This isn't just my father's birthday it is for all special events and birthdays

ETIQUETTE- who pay's?

Myself and one brother are 25+ and working, he is a teacher and takes classes so claims to have a limited budget but goes out almost every night and picks over the top restaurants. The other two are high school and college but have summer jobs.

ETIQUETTE- who pay's?

Traditionally, for a birthday or special occasion my family goes out to dinner to celebrate the guest of honor. This occurs 2 or 3 times a year and we never go out to dinner together as a family except for these few occasions. Usually the guest of honor chooses the restaurant and sets up the plan. Everyone else in my family expects my father to pay on these occasions and does not open their wallet. I always offer at least the cost of my meal and my father accepts the money.

I have started to grow tired of this set up. My brother planned a lavish dinner out in the city after I already purchased him a gift, and I was the only one to throw $40 to my father. Had I known about this dinner out I would have skipped the gift and offered to chip in for his dinner as a gift. Last week there was another dinner that I indicated I couldn’t attend- my family was up in arms and insisted I go. Again, I was the only to resentfully offer the money for my meal.

How can I bring myself some peace and get this situation under control? I don’t mind paying for my meal but it really frosts my cookies that everyone puts their nose in the air while my father fumbles for a credit card. I feel that we should agree ahead of time what kind of dinner it will be- I would like everyone to be on the same page. Any suggestions about how to broach this subject????

A Monday Dinner in Roslindale- Sophia's Grotto

Yesterday was a gorgeous day and my boyfriend and I were trying to think of a new place to eat that perhaps had al fresco dining. Marina Bay was our first thought, but then I remembered dining at the Birch Street Bistro a couple of years ago and really enjoying it. I searched on Chowhound for Roslindale recommendations and ended up looking at 4 places (Delfino, Sophia's, Birch Street and Geoffrey's). Delfino was closed on Mondays, so although that menu looked best we had to pass it over. Geoffrey's menu seemed a bit limited, as did BSB, so we opted for Sophia's.

From the moment we entered the little brick courtyard I was in love! How could a patio in Roslindale feel so much like a meditteranean getaway?

We started with the bruschetta with tomatoes and mozzerella, which was perfectly cooked. It was a nice hearty chewy bread that had been grilled to the right degree of crunchiness. My date got the Vesuvio pizza, a small brick oven style pizza that didn't leave you hungry. It was topped with sausage, sliced tomatoes, ricotta, mozzerella, and red peppers. The cheese was fresh and almost creamy and the sausage didn't over power you. The tomatoes were perfectly cooked and blended in with the sauce. I got the Ziti Boscaiola- sautéed mushrooms, prosciutto, asparagus tips in a pink sauce- and it was amazing! My date and I were supposed to share but I could not stop eating that pasta. Everything was cooked perfectly and it blended together so well... the vegetables were tender, the prosciutto not too tough, and the pasta al dente.

To top it all off, we got a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant. We were also surprised by how reasonable Sophia's was- including two cocktails (a pomegranate and a strawberry martini), our bill came to only $52.

I must say that after several horrible dining experiences over the past couple of weeks, Sophia's was a breath of fresh air! (Literally). We are definitely going back again!

Retirement lunch- Braintree area

My company is looking to have a retirement lunch somewhere in Braintree or
Randolph area (convenient to Needham, Boston and Taunton). I am looking for suggestions. I thought of Cheesecake factory, Bella's, La Scala, Rock Bottom.. it doesn't really matter if it is a chain restaurant or not, as long as they can accomodate us with a section or room of our own. (We will have 20-30 people).

Thanks for your input!!! :)

Need Rec's for 8 by collegse in Providence, good food, reasonable prices

Caeserta Pizza on the hill is a winner in my book. Great pizza, beer, soda, crowd friendly, cheap... I can't resist going there everytime I am in Providence!

Where have you always had a bad meal?

204 has some excellent meals and some that need to come off the menu. They have had the same menu since they opened in 1989. If you ever go again I would recommend ordering off the specials menu or asking your waitress for recommendations.

Went last night- thought it was going to be the next Sky or Stoneforge of the area. Not so. Hardwood floors and bare walls made the place seem cold. We asked to sit at the bar, but learned they have no "bar," but a lounge area where you can sit in big leather chairs near a gas fireplace. At first glance the room seemed warm, welcoming, relaxing, stylish etc. We sat next to the fireplace but it gave off no heat, which was unfortunate considering the horrible draft from the fire escape door. I think I put on and took off my jacket at least 5 times. Eventually we asked to move seats because it was so cold. The room was also noisy despite the small number of people present.

We ordered the calamari ($8) and the pizza of the day ($12). The calamari was horrible. Probably the worst I have ever had. The batter fell off when you touched it, and the consistency was like large thick tough rubber bands. We sent it back. The pizza had chicken, spinach and alfredo sauce and was quite plain.

I was very dissapointed- I walked in with high expectations and left thinking it was one of the worst meals I have had in a long time! :(
