Shrimp 'n Grits, Hominy Grill, Charleston, SC
I want some form of sauce in shrimp and grits. Creamy gravy sounds tasty.
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
They are fully booked. The only hope is waiting in line for a bar seat. I would stop calling, as the waiting list has been closed off
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
It may not be a loss for them, but it is for me. I want to eat there again. One of a handful of triangle restaurants that always seemed to nail it. You could always taste the lengths they went to make killer food, especially if you know how to cook.
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
Along with Vinho Verde, it does lose that little fizz after being open for a day. Maybe that reduces Txakoli's by the glass appearances. That aside, I can't believe MG is closing. I thought it was a joke until there was a blurb on the late news last night.
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
This is terrible news. Outside of the comment about US restaurants serving Txakoli ( of which there are many), this is spot on. The last paragraph is a great synopsis of Magnolia Grill. Hard to believe they won't be in the culinary mix of NC.
raleigh nc - vino restaurant or other italian
Vivace certainly has the best Italian wine list I've encountered in Raleigh. The beverage program is great all around.
Restaurants in Durham?
Auto correct on a tablet. It is certainly a free country, and that allows me to disagree with your assessment of MG. It's a great restaurant that has spawned many of the top chefs in the region. I have eaten many special things at MG, testa included.
Restaurants in Durham?
There food is not mediocre. If you were actually a foodie, you could decipher that much. I've yet to experience Magnolia Grill running out of items with any consistency as well, so I would strike the always from that comment. By the way, highlighting a word in all caps usually emphasizes a lack of writing ability, not the word.
Affordable Raleigh Brunch?
If a ride to Durham is ok, you need to check out scratch. It is small and hard to get a table, but the food is worth it. Very reasonable, awesome coffee and plenty of baked goods to take home
Yuri for sushi in Cary NC
Had a very nice dinner at Yuri last night. Fish selection was really good, with a few nice surprises in Japanese snapper, kampachi and live scallop. rice was cooked perfectly and seasoned on the light side, and they served us that grated wasabe that comes frozen in a plastic bag ( much better than paste, not as good as the real thing) which was a nice touch. Roll selection was huge and mostly american in style, with plenty of fried, krab, cream cheese, etc. options and sweet sauces. Well executed for the style, and augmented with very fresh tasting fish.
We only ate from the sushi bar, so I can't comment on the rest of the kitchen, but the sushi side is very good. I found prices to be about what they should for high quality fish, and our server was
great. Looking forward to another visit and will order lots of nigiri next time. Definitely on my short list of sushi restaurants.
Sunday night dinner in Chapel Hill
Have to add Kurama to the list. Great sushi between ch and durham
Greensboro Monday night
Whats open Monday night. We definitely wanted to go to table 16, but it's closed. Where to next?
Lunch spots in Downtown Durham?
All you can eat sushi sounds like fish needed to get rid of.
KoMo KoMo in Cary
The Vivace review rivals it in sillyness. I started to wonder if it was a satirical blog when the lack of veal parm was mentioned twice.
KoMo KoMo in Cary
What do you think about this blog. After reading a few entries, I was left scratching my head.
Seeking Sushi in RTP area
Kurama in Durham is the best sushi restaurant in nc I've been to. They serve both American style sushi and authentic Japanese sushi. Waraji is pretty good as well, but not in the same league.
Il Palio - Chapel Hill
He's still in the area selling truffles and great olive oil from his estate in Umbria. I think the name of the company is simply flavors
Eastern NC - Fried Herring
The filling station in Robersonville usually has herring as well. They also serve beer. Blackbeards and Jamesville, if they're still in business, do not. I'd be willing to bet Blackbeards makes the best version, as their food is the best of the three across the board.
Where to eat in Snowshoe village
Just got back from snowshoe. Had four meals out and two good days of skiing before the warm weather came in. Here's my two cents.
Sunset Cantina - The best meal of the trip. Very tasty Tex-Mex and great service. They seem to pay attention to detail in the kitchen, as even the beans and rice were not an afterthought. Cornmeal shrimp relleno is not to be missed
Cheat Mountain Pizza - A small step up from digiorno. Wings were poor and service a bit slow due to understaffing. Least favorite meal, although not offensive pizza to fill up a family for less money than other options
Stash - The place was empty, so we decide on sushi over south mountain. All in all, pretty tasty. Fish selection was very limited and quality was average, but the flavors were good and the rice was spot on. The guys behind the counter did a good job with what they had to work with
Foxfire- had a decent lunch here, but felt like they had used the better pre-fab options out there. Wings were very tasty as were the fries. Not bad, not great
All in all, slightly better than expected for 20% more money than outside the resort (also expected)

Thanks for the reports. Heading up a week from Sunday, and Sunset Cantina and South Mountain Grille are on the radar. Is there still an Asian/Sushi place. As I'm typing that, I realize its probably not a great idea in WV.
Happy New Year
Hope everyone had a fun night. Happy New Year to all those that love food and beverage.
Il Palio - Chapel Hill
In Chapel Hill he worked at Elaine's and Jujube before Il Palio. Prior to that, he was in NYC.
Il Palio - Chapel Hill
Adam Rose is thecurrent chef, and a guy named Isaac is sous. Their dedication to sourcing great products and cooking them with passion makes Il Palio a must stop for people who are into food. Again, just a stellar meal.
Il Palio - Chapel Hill
It had been over a year since my last visit, so I was excited to drop by last night for an early meal. The food was awesome. Highlights were beef tartare flavored with capers and black truffle, Prosciutto with truffle marinated mushrooms, Beausoleil oysters, butternut squash ravioli with balsamic brown butter, lobster fra diavolo with squid ink pasta, grilled quail with pears, seared foie gras with brioche and duck sausage, shellfish stew in red sauce, seared duck breast and braised rabbit. Just fantastic food and a great server made for a perfect pre-game meal.
Where to eat in Snowshoe village
We are going for two nights. Driving up Sunday and leaving Tuesday afternoon, and will be eating out both lunch and dinner.
Where to eat in Snowshoe village
Thanks for the info. We're heading there at the end of January, so any additional feedback would be appreciated. I think we're stuck with the options at the top of the mountain, as no one wants to cook and everyone wants to drink.
Chola Nad Chapel Hill
How about a really good diner? Breakfast, lunch and dinner would help tackle the rent hurdle. Reasonable prices would help draw the volulme of people needed. If everything was made from scratch, the kitchen was run by a talented chef and there was an interesting beverage program I think it would have a shot at making a little money.
Chola Nad Chapel Hill
I've heard the rent on the Penang space is 14,000/month. What do you think will be able to survive there? It's gotta be something priced to do large volume.
Where to eat in Snowshoe village
Anyone have recent reports on the restaurant scene at snowshoe?
Chola Nad Chapel Hill
who's losing a space? Cypress lost a space because the economics of rent versus sales is razor thin on Franklin St. I don't see a great difference in this new restaurant's ability to succeed, especially in light of the close by Indian options. I also love Vimala's, and want them to continue to be successful. Lulu's Mom is correct in her interpretation of my post, which incidentally, seems fairly clear after re-reading. To clarify for burgeoningmoodie and rory, re-read my post. Cholanad occupies the old Cypress space. This will be a tough go for anyone, especially an Indian restaurant with vimala's and others in very close proximity.
As for Rory's last comment, come on man. I said Vimala's and Cholanad were not identical styles of Indian food, which you agreed with. I don't see enough people differentiating the subtleties of two southern Indian restaurants on Franklin St. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
