North Vancouver -- green grocer/vegetable store

We just moved to Lynn Valley (from Richmond) and are looking for a good green grocer/vegetable store.

I have only discovered Kin's and generally I am not much of a fan of Kin;s.

I'm willing to drive, preferably on this side of the water.

Any suggestions?

Onigiri wrappers

Has anyone seen the onigiri wrappers that are prevalent in Japan that keep the nori separate from the rice until you are ready to eat it? The kind that are on convenience store or grocery store onigiri in Japan.

Last time I looked at Fujiya (maybe a year ago) they didn't carry it.

ISO of Bibb/butter lettuce

Any suggestion for reasonably priced bibb/butter lettuce? I checked out a couple of markets in Richmond and one had it for over $3 a head... Perhaps T&T?

DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker

I haven't had any trouble with it. It usually takes about 25 minutes for soft serve texture and longer to firm up a bit. I usually let it go about 30-35 and throw the ice cream in the freezer to get really firm.

I don't pre-cool the machine but I do make sure the ice cream mixture has chilled for at six hours in the fridge. The batches I do are pretty small -- 600-700 ml.

I've done an number of recipes from David Lebovitz's The Prefect Scoop. I made his Philadelphia-style vanilla by making one and half of the recipes and then freezing it two batches. I did the Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream in one batch last night (it took about 35 minutes to freeze).

Pinky's out, new burger joint in on 4th Ave (Vancouver)

I think its worth mentioning that they currently don't have any boosters or high chairs. We took our 10 month old and had a little travel seat for him, so we did fine. This seems a bit odd, since its Kits. While we were there at least two other kids needing highchairs came in and a least a couple that would have preferred a booster to being nose to nose with the table.

That said, I loved the food.

I got mine at William Sonoma in Calgary to save on the PST when I was driving through last month.

Give the Vancouver Store a call and see if they have it.

It has been great so far for a dozen or so batches and I have done a couple back to back, if anything the second batch is done faster because the machine is already cool.

Any feedback on seafood tower at Blue Water Cafe?

If you are doing a beach day in Kitsilano I'd recommend Rocky Mountain Flat Bread -- great for lunch or dinner. Local ingredients, interesting pizza, local beer and very kid friendly. I've take my nine-month old a couple of times and he loves it -- especially watching the wood burning pizza oven.

Reasonable and tasty eats for a band on tour in BC, especially in Northern BC and Okanagan?

In Penticton there is a great little lunch spot, Il Vecchio Delicatessen, on Robinson, behind the bus depot. They make the best little sandwiches for $3.75. Any two meats and a cheese plus toppings. It gets really busy on weekends but is worth the wait. When in area we stop by Penticton for these sandwiches and head to the beach or a nearby winery.

Brew pubs and kids

Hi there,

We are venturing to Seattle for the first time (from Canada) to explore your brewing scene. However, we have a four-month-old. Are your brew pubs, like many in Portland, actually restaurants where we could bring a baby (we are talking lunch and early dinners, like 5 or 6 pm)?

Any recommendations for baby-friendly places that have great beer?

Papi's -- Steveston

Moving with the times, Papi’s Ristorante Italiano (12551 No. 1 Road, Richmond) has ditched the formality, resurfacing as Papi’s Trattoria and Enoteca and offering a lower-priced casual menu that changes each Monday. The restaurant’s popular cooking classes and winetastings resume in September. Next door, the wine bar has become Mondo Burger, serving classic burgers, hot dogs, floats, and shakes.

I think a diner could do well in Steveston -- not sure in Mondo Burger will fill the bill.

Their website doesn't appear to be updated with the changes... so if you know more I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

baby-friendly restaurant for weekend brunch/lunch/tea

Not the brunchiest menu, but Rocky Mountain Flatbread is amazingly kid-friendly. Front room has easy access to a play area to keep the more energetic kids busy. It's a great lunch spot and a short walk to the beach after for a run around. If you want to do a dinner there on a Sunday/Monday night the kids can make their own pizza. It is busy (at least a dinner) but they do take reservations. We saw a giant group of close to 20 adults and a bunch of kids last Saturday night, looked like the staff handled it easily.

Vancouver Dinner Reception Location for 40 - 45 People

If you are interested in Steamworks, consider the Transcontinental, next door. It's run by the same group, so similar food but the atmosphere is a bit nicer -- reminiscent of the 40s with the their big round booths. I've been to private events there and it seemed to work well.

looking for reasonably-priced kitchen gadgets in Vancouver

I read a review of many in magazine and oddly enough President's choice at Superstore came up for best value in Pizza stones. I grabbed one and love it -- crisp ever time (granted you need the right dough and a 475 degree oven). I think it was around $10 and came with a wire rack as well.

Lard -- Vancouver

Thanks! Commercial drive is a great suggestion -- can't believe it didn't occur to me.

I haven't tried T&T yet. I have see pork fat there but not rendered lard (granted I wasn't looking for it at the time). Worse case I could put in the effort and do that myself I guess.

Hida miso

In September we went to Takayama and Shirakawago.

There we had the greatest grilled veg and meat on magnolia leaves and some sort of miso paste.

I was wondering if anyone has ideas on what would be in the miso that makes it a specialty of the Hida area and makes it so tasty?

Steveston Village, BC - good eats?

I really like Kisamos greek. It is a small family run place with affordable prices and nice size portions, but they aren't re-inventing the wheel.

Steveston Pizza has a phenomenal reputation -- but it's take out.

A great experience is going to Pajos Fish and Chips on the the water (as in floating on the water). It is pretty neat how it serves its food in cones and has specially designed tables to balance them.

I would skip Reflections Gastronomie. Over priced and self-important and the food is average on a good day.

Finish with Timothy's Frozen Yogurt. It's great!
