BYOB on MS Gulf Coast

the only restaurant on the coast that I'm aware of that has BYOB is Darwell's in Long Beach. Usually a live band also. The food is outstanding.

New Orleans on a Budget

There are many places to go on a budget, the first that pops into my head is Verti Mart

MS Gulf Coast Mini-Report

sorry Bill, I tried to warn you. Nothing on the coast knocks my socks off, it's such a shame.

Gulf Coast Recs. for Upcoming Trip

I know I sound like a cheerleader for Darwells but its the only restaurant that has wow'ed me in three years. It upsets me that all my favorite restaurants are simply not serving palatable fare anymore. I'm sick and tired of spending my hard earned money on mediocre food anymore. I've noticed the same pattern not only on the MS coast but also in NO. I'm gonna start patronizing only restaurants that WOW me.

Dragos in New Orleans

Bill, you sum up the Hilton location well. I have always gone to the Fat City location and the oysters and service was always stellar.

Gulf Coast Recs. for Upcoming Trip

Damn Bill, I know your counting on Flounder I havnt been to Blowfly since the 80's but I hear from everyone that their stuffed flounder is excellent. I also used to enjoy Steve's Marina but unfortunately they were awfull at their location at the airport. I havnt been since they re-opened at the Long Beach harbor, I doubt I'll give them another shot. If I have to drive all the way to Long Beach I'm going to Darwells, they didnt skimp on my seafood dish and the food was excellent!

Gulf Coast Recs. for Upcoming Trip

Bill, I hate to say this but if your expecting pre Katrina experience at Chimney's then youll also be dissapointed. Chimney's was my favorite restaurant before the hurricane and the new restaurant is not the same. The menu has changed and the food does not live up to their reputation. If you want the best food for your money I still think Darwells is your best bet.

Gulf Coast Recs. for Upcoming Trip

Bill , personally I'de skip Mahoney's. Pretty much run into the ground by Mary's son since she died, shame cause I loved eating there. I will agree with Littleman on Vrazels, probably the best fine dining establishment on the coast. I believe its where the old Angelo's spaghetti restaurant used to be located.
I've recently been to Darwell;s and was not dissapointed. My Yum Yum dish was loaded with seafood and I hear theres no filling in their crab cakes.

French dressing on pizza in Biloxi?

Hey Jim, I too have fond memories of Hugo's. Although I never put french dressing on my pizza. Can you tell me what all was on the Norman pizza that I used to love?

Central Grocery is Rude

Stopped going to Central decades ago. Was ordering Prosciutto and asked if it was Parma : received dirty look, asked to have it sliced thin yet another dirty look. I've givin up on their Muffaletta's a long time ago. An informed source told me they dont use pure olive oil anymore. Forgot what they were using,

Travel Channel's Food Wars: Was Domilise's vs. Parkway the Right Shrimp Po Boy Challenge?

Who puts Ketchup on a Shrimp Po-Boy? Thats the craziest thing I ever heard of. Parkway beats Domilis's hands down!

Who has the Best Po-Boys in South Mississippi?

I personally would pass on Fayard's. Pretty poor excuse for a po-boy. Their are much better along the gulf coast.

Breakfast in Gulfport or BIloxi

Try Boomtown for breakfast, much lager selection and much better grub than the local dives. Sorry but you dont wanna pay 4 star prices for 2 star food at the local establishments!

Need Good Southern Eats in Birmingham, AL

As for the BBQ joints you mentioned I'de stick to JIm and Nicks, they serve some pretty damn good BBQ not to mention the cheesy cornbread. Dreamland may be an institution in Al but I've had much better.

Nighthawk frozen dinners

I grew up on Nighthawk frozen dinners which I used to get at Wally world till they stopped carrying them. Does anyone know which supermarkets in south Louisiana carries Nighthawk?

South Louisiana hot sauces

for some reason Tabasco never really did it for me. Louisiana One Drop and Crystal are the bombs, especially on oyster and shrimp po-boys.

Fest Dining...I know, I know...don't shoot me

IMO I would go to Liuzza's by the Track. Within walking distance of the Fest and right up your alley if you want local flair. I'm sure they get pretty busy during the fest but its well worth it.

Man, talk about a blast from the past. I havnt even thought about the old Mary's Drive Inn in a long time. Located on Division Street right across from Lee Street stadium I remember dining there in the 70's with my Mom.

Don't forget to leave a famous name for pickup and don't act like a tourist and ask what the ziplock bags of water hanging outside are for, lol
