Ice Fili - Russian Ice Cream

I just checked back and saw the responses -- Very grateful, thank you!!

I will be checking out the groceries you mentioned! I've heard that ice cream is seasonal there for winter! Meaning.. they enjoy eating their ice cream when it is cold out! Can't wait to try :)

Ice Fili - Russian Ice Cream

hi chowhound! i am really interested in trying ice fili's ice cream somewhere in LA -- my searches online have yielded ZERO results but i have heard that they do export to California...

so wondering:
1) has anyone ever tried russian ice cream before?? what do you think??
2) where can i get a hold of some???

apparently ice fili also makes one that is like a creme brulee with corn chips in there? I.WANT.TO.TRY!!! :)

pls help. thanks again!

december honeymoon in Paris -- food recs needed!

hello!

i am writing from Los Angeles~ and need some recommendations for where to eat while in Paris on our honeymoon! we love food (gross understatement) and would really like our dining experience in paris to be memorable.

can you help?

we are looking for equal parts of great meals (both in terms of food and experience) + grab and go type meals (less expensive, more chill environment). since we'll be there for christmas too... if anyone has suggestions for where to eat on that day, we'd greatly appreciate it!!

also, we may take some day trips around Paris and do not have a problem centering that around a good meal if necessary. thus far, versailles is on the to-do list but nothing else.

dates: 12/23-28 (wed-mon) -- including christmas eve/day.

location: we will be staying at Le Méridien Montparnasse (19 Rue du Commandant Mouchotte) and Westin Paris (3 Rue De Castiglione) during this time... but as they say, have fork and willing to travel~!

i have done a fair amount of research on this board but honestly it is a bit of information overload. i have places like jules verne and Boyer Les Crayeres on the list, but as a first timer in paris... too many options is not a good thing.

i'm the first to acknowledge that recs are based on personal taste, so i take everything with a grain of salt -- but really what i'm looking for is to just put yourself in my shoes... and tell me where you would go!!

THANK YOU sincerely in advance!

Free-Range.. Organic..

help!

we have some friends coming to town and need some recommendations: does anyone know a good spot that has a variety of organic and free-range (meat) options????

i have heard of O Burger (in west hollywood) and Local (in silverlake)... any other recommendations?

willing to drive, although i'd like to keep it closer to downtown and pasadena than the westside...

please please help!! :)

Advice with chinese/western wedding cuisine please

Ryan and Caroline -- Congrats!!

I think there are a number of options, but it would be easier figure out a location first of where you'd like everything to be held - that would really help you narrow down the ideas.

I'll let everyone else speak to other locations, but I'd like to put in my 2cents about the Universal Hilton if the only thing you're worried about is the crowds/parking/logistics, etc.

I've been to more than my share of weddings there, some for over 500+ people. They do a phenomenal job with food (you can definitely work with them to create a menu you like) and their manager is really efficient. I've sat at the head table a number of times, and they really do make sure that the bride and groom are taken care of for the evening.

With weddings of that size, I have never noticed any big logistical problems. It can be a nightmare if your guests may be prone to running late, but if you stress an earlier start-time than what you intend, you should be fine. Just plan your day-of schedule well, and let the hotel handle the rest -- they are a well greased machine.

Enjoy!!!! :)

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

I am reviving this because I've done some research now and still cannot find this cake --

I know this much: the chinese name for the cake described is "su pi dan gao"

I've searched in all the chinatown (los angeles) bakeries to no avail. So my next stop is alhambra area bakeries. Is anyone familiar with the area and know which specific bakeries I can visit to find this cake?

All I need is one slice so I can inspect/examine/study it to begin my baking adventure!!

Please help :)

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

yesss.. definitely flaky like a puff pastry... anyone's guess is better than mine right now since i devoured it so quickly. geez.

i love that link, thank you for sharing, i will definitely use a variation of that recipe once i figure out that missing, and ever elusive, flaky layer.

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

I've definitely heard that it is quite common in chinese bakeries, so I may need to go find one now and try to investigate all the layers in order to duplicate. I agree with the cream... it was very different!

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

Wow... I appreciate all the responses!! I am very curious now as to what it really was that I had (phyllo versus others). The real reason why I am so curious is because I am trying to duplicate.. so if anyone comes across any recipes similar, please do share!!

Thanks again to the ever helpful hounds!

Chinese Bakeries

Pei, I know you posted this a while ago, but in my search for the su pi dan gao you described above, you are a godsend for finally putting a name to my recollection.

Thank you!

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

I can't remember EXACTLY what all was in the cake at this point since I gobbled it down so quickly, but it was definitely very similar to what you described above. Your details may help me narrow down my recipe search a bit. Thank you!

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

Yes! There was phyllo as a middle layer in the cake. It wasn't very thick, and it was in conjunction with the light creme and fruit in the middle... it was the perfect combination of texture and flavors. I'm dying to try and replicate for an upcoming birthday.

What is the cake that I'm thinking of?

I’m not typically one for sweets, but I went to a chinese wedding recently and had the best cake EVER! Not the typical wedding cake...

It was light, not too sweet, and it basically tasted like sponge cake with fruit, light cream AND a layer of phyllo??? Does this sound familiar at all?!

It was amazing. I am wondering if anyone knows what this cake is called and if there's a recipe out there for it!

Please help!!!
