Houston's Steak & Ribs...why didn't I listen?

They might have "borrowed" the concept but they definitely did not come remotely close to the quality of the chain in the states . . . The smoked salmon app in the states is to die for... The food at the one here is very sad indeed...

Apple Fritter Search!

Hi TOVG

Nope it's not Yianni's . . . It's the place that sells pies and cakes and stuff like that

SB

Apple Fritter Search!

Hey Katzen,

I haven't had one in a while but there is a shop on the lower level of the St. Lawrence Market that has some really awesome apple fritters . . . I'm not sure of the name of the place (why do I never remember the names of stores I go to?) but it is the dessert place that is right in front of the stairs when you go down . . . they also serve coffees on the side of the store . . . Their fritters are crunchy in spots and moist in others but always full of apples . . .

Check it out...

moving to hamilton Mountain Any recs?

Hey Philly,

Try . . . Chicago Style Pizza . . . It's a great little old school Italian joint that makes a great red sauce . . . I've eaten a lot of their food and I always leave satisfied . . . It's not upscale but more of a family run place . . . And be warned their portion sizes are on the large size...

Zelda's on Church....Closed?

You are so right . . . The food at the Rainbow is terrible!!! . . . and yes it is amazing that given the area and the disposable $$$ there are not better choices...Lets keep our fingers crossed for the Zelda's location...

ISO best meatball sandwich in Toronto.

I really like the MB Sub at Olympic Pizza . . . The meatballs are very moist and well seasoned and their red sauce is very light and fresh tasting . . . Another bonus is that it is quite big and it comes with a cold crisp salad all for around 10 bucks

Zoulpy's Deli ... Are they open Sundays?

Wow... that really is a shame!! . . . They will be missed. . . One of the best bang for your buck places in town.

Thanks for the info and the other option...I have yet to get to Caplansky's new place and I do love a good hash (no doubt his will be great!!! ). . . So that might be the spot . . . although I think tomorrow there will be a bunch of road closures in the city (i think there are a couple races going on) We were wanting a place east of Yonge to avoid any driving issues...But I'll have to get me some of that hash soon!!

Thanks COTS,

Zoulpy's Deli ... Are they open Sundays?

Hey Guys,

I've only ever been to Zoulpy's for lunch and have always enjoyed their food ...So the question is... Are they open for breakfast on Sundays? . . . And if they are what do you like to get?
Thinking about breakfast for tomorrow...

Thanks,

greasy hangover breakfast near queen and bathurst

Hey Clamnectar,

That surprising to me . . . I have been to SD's many times over the years and although the food is not "gourmet" . . . I definitely would not categorize it as disgusting...What did you have that was so bad? . . . I find their homefries better than most and their "mexican" breakfast pretty good as well . . . And for an omelette w/ homefries and toast for 5.75 it's not bad ... their benny is only 6.25...as far as service goes I have yet to have a problem and have found most of their servers pleasant... during the week you can also get the daily breakfast special (11-4) which gives you 2 eggs, ham, bacon or sausage, homefries and toast for 3.25

As well...I have also been to most of the spoons listed above and I find for the money I keep heading back to SD's . . . Maybe it's me but I dig the place ...

Fish and Chips

Hey Guys,

My buddy and I actually got lost out in the south Queensway the other day and we drove right by New Toronto Fish and Chips . . . The place looked pretty busy so we decided to give it a try . . . We each ordered the 2 piece halibut and chips and we were amazed by the size and quality of the fish . . . The 2 pieces were fried to a perfect golden brown (a little greasier than some places... but in a good way if that makes sense) and the batter was perfectly crisp . . . As someone mentioned above the batter seemed a little salty (which was ok for our taste ) it just meant we went a little lighter on the salt ourselves. As for the portion size I was really impressed as the 2 pieces were quite large and thicker pieces than I have found at other fish and chip shops (I actually couldn't finish all the fries). I had asked the owner how long they had been in business and he told me 35 years . . . They've gotta being doing something right to be open that long and all I know is that we will be back!!

Best 'Snack' between Queen's Park and Roncesvalles

You could try a Papusa from one of the Latin places in the Kensington Market . . . Definitely on your way home . . . cheap and very tasty (without being too large) . . . Off hand I can't think of the names of the stores (fellow hounds...help me out!) . . . It's funny that you can go into a store so often and not know the name of it . . . I always call them the papusa stores...

You could also try a couple of vietnamese spring rolls (the fresh ones) . . . They're satisfying and don't make you feel too heavy . . . There are a ton of spots . . . on Spadina...Pho Hung comes to mind (apparently their wings are pretty good as well.. but I have yet to try them) and you could also go to the Golden Turtle just south of college on Ossington Ave.

Well that's all I've got for now . . . I'm sure more will come...
Happy snacking!!!

Help! Cheap places to eat - Hamilton or Brantford area?

Hi,

For some decent Italian try Chicago Style Pizza Shack on the mountain . . . It has great homestyle italian dishes and their red sauce is great! . . .I've always enjoyed the food there . . . The place is not fancy but is family run and offers outstanding value...

SB

What was your favourite restaurant that went downhill after they solidified their status

I agree with embee in regards to SC the chicken is inconsistently cooked . . . but the big change for me was when they changed their tasty chicken sandwich . . . It was originally (for decades) served on a nice crusty roll (much like a larger version of their dinner rolls) . . . Now it is served on a joke of a hamburger bun . . . The bun always made the sandwich and now I never order it . . . now I usually get delivered the family meal in which you can opt for 6 dark quarters and fries for around 28 bucks . . . And as far as the sauce goes . . . as a kid I always got a fries and two sauces ...one to dip and one to sip . . . that for me has not changed (I know I'm scaring you)...

Bring back the old bun!!!!

Best Jerk Chicken?

Hey Yummy,

I whole heartedly agree!

I too would love to find out where they relocated to (if they did) . . . I used to go in at least weekly for years . . . Their oxtail was the best I've had as well were their stews (at least that's what they called them) and their jerk . . . I was really dissappointed when they closed and I never noticed a sign saying they were relocating . . . If you find them let us know . . . It was a sad day when they closed!

Spaghetti and meatballs

No sweat Ziggy . . . Let us know what you think about Quattro Ragazze . . . I might check it out myself as you said. . . It's good to venture out of the hood . . . Next time your at Olympic. . . give the pasta a try they are pretty decent . . . I tend to stick to the red sauce so can't comment on the cream sauces . . . I know their lasagna is really very good IMO . . .

Enjoy,

Spaghetti and meatballs

Hi Ziggy,

I'm a fan of the spaghetti and meatballs at Olympic Pizza as their sauce has a very fresh taste and is not too heavy and I really think their meatballs are quite tasty as well . . . It's located on Gloucester Street just east of Yonge street . . . I think the place gives you a pretty good bang for the buck as far as value goes . . . I think the spaghetti and meatballs will run about 11 bucks and will include a salad that is a decent size and if you want you can make it a greek salad for 1.50 extra . . . Their lasagna and pizzas are also pretty good as well . . . If you get the greek salad and the pasta you will not leave hungry that is for sure! . . . I also find their staff very friendly as well . . .

Enjoy and have a Happy Birthday,

Best burgers

for an old school buger I really like the patty melt at The Pilot Tavern . . . It's served on toasted rye with sauted onions . . . The burger is juicy and seems very beefy ( I know a burger should taste beefy but many don't) . . . when you get it make sure to get the sweet potato fries as they are much better that their regular fries...

Enjoy,

SB

Best burgers

My buddy told me about the extreme burger at Moxies and claimed it was one of the best he has ever had . . . So I decided to go before we went to a movie at Yorkdale . . . I must say that the burger did surprise me . . . It was possibly the juiciest burger I have ever had and they had really good double smoke bacon and some good aged cheddar with sauted onions and mushrooms as well . . . It really was quite tasty . . . I don't know about the rest of the food there but the burger is worth checking out...

Unique Toronto Breakfast Recs.

I second Sneaky's . . . We're often in for breakfast on the weekends and are always happy with our meals . . .Their omelettes are great! . . . I also like their huevos rancheros and the eggs benny . . . their hollandaise sauce is not traditional as it's sort of a parmesean cheese sauce but I like it . . . Their steak and eggs are good as well. . . and for the money you can't beat it...

3 Toronto Hounds in Manhattan for a week...We need some casual places to eat

Hi Kathyrn,

As far as the BBQ goes . . .you are right . . . not all BBQ is equal!!! . . . Having lived in Texas for nearly 4 years it is somethig I crave (you don't get very good BBQ in Toronto) . . . we definitely love good ribs (we prefer pork) and we love beef brisket as well . . . Those would be the focus of our BBQ hunt . . . if we get good sides it's a bonus! . . .

any recs will be appreciated!

Thanks,
