Sweetbreads recipe from Saveur

Looks delicious! And inspires me to try again. I deep fried them last night and they were good but nowhere near as good as I have had in restos. Once before, I bought some at an Argentinian grocery and threw them on the grill with no prep. Ended up feeding them to my dogs - they were inedible. You def need to soak them.

Westwood Revitalized? Saks Closes.

Sadly, Westwood Brewery has also closed. My husband works at UCLA so we lunch quite a bit in Westwood. Skylight Gardens has good beer on tap and a great ribeye. The best coffee for miles around is Profeta, right around the corner.

What Westwood needs, and really all of LA, is better, safer roads for bicyclists. My husband bikes every day and it's crazy how bad the roads are and how dangerous all those intersections in and out of Westwood are. It's a college town, of sorts, and should have better pedestrian and bicycle access.

Sweetbreads!

JoanN, thanks for this info. Had purchased sweetbreads, testicles and hearts from a lamb at the farmers market and wanted to fry it all up last night, only I didn't have time to press the sweetbreads. Your comment gave me the confidence to forgo the pressing and just soak them in salted milk for around 2 hours.
The testicles were okay, the heart was tough but good, and the sweetbreads were fairly good. Husband refused to eat testicles, of course.

New Metod line from Ikea arrives in the US when?

I am hoping someone out there has an idea of when the new Metod will arrive in the US? We are re-doing our kitchen but I am willing to wait if the Metod line will be arriving next year. It appears to be huge improvement over the current Akurum line. See link below. Also on the page is the link to download a pdf that describes in Swedish, the entire Metod line.

KitchenAid meat grinders

A hunter friend gave us some elk so we got the grinder to make meatballs with it. The KA grinder worked well. Ran the chilled meat through twice and added a little pork for extra fat and flavor.

What's your favorite restaurant?

Late night bone-in rib eye steaks at Pacific Dining Car in Santa Monica. Great steaks and great service served up in a large booth...

Dinner after opera in downtown or Plateau 'hoods?

Thank you all for your suggestions! I just made a reservation at Brasserie T!, whose kitchen they said closes at 11:30pm. The night before we are going to Pied de Cochon and I do want to try Maison Publique for brunch.
Can't wait to arrive and start eating!

Dinner after opera in downtown or Plateau 'hoods?

My husband and I will be visiting Montreal and attending the Opera on a Thursday night, which ends at 10:30pm. We will be on foot or taxi and looking for a restaurant that accepts customers walking in at 11pm. I was hoping for something either near the Opera or near our hotel, in the Plateau. Coming from LA, we are trying to eat foie gras with every dinner to make up for our forced abstinence!

Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

Do they serve blood sausage and sweetbreads as part of their bbq? Couldn't tell from the online menu.

Does anyone know where Bruno will go?

The closing of Saint Amour is horrible news! It was the only place I knew of in all of California that does andouillette!! It is what made Saint Amour such a unique French restaurant! It it opens without chef Bruno, then it loses what made that place so special.

LOL chris2269. I live in a world where everyone should be reading off the script I prepared! ;o)
But glad to hear that Cowboy Star ranks as the best!

I haven't been to CUT, but is their Prime Porterhouse, 34 oz, aged 21 days, corn fed, really any better than Cowboy Star's Myer Ranch prime porterhouse, 40 oz, aged 21 day days and corn fed? They don't have the prices online so I can't compare that element.

Father's Office is enjoyable and the food is good, but you have to go to the bar to order, which means getting the bartender's attention. Also, unless you go in off times, seating can be difficult. We go to the Culver City location, haven given up on the Santa Monica one (though, back in my nightclubs days, we went there before heading out on the town - but that was pre Yoon days when the only food was pizza delivered from next door). I admit, we went to Neighborhood during a slow time - 1pm on Sat, but it was nice to just sit and be served. I found the food comparable. To us, it seemed like a more relaxed, less pretentious place that Father's Office.
The beer selection is smaller, but it made it more manageable to order. IMO
I just wish we had a porterhouse in LA like you guys get at Cowboy Star!

I read all the postings about restaurants in the GasLamp district before I joined my husband at a conference at the Omni. I finally gave him good directions to Cafe Chloe, which he enjoyed for breakfast. He LOVED the coffee!
Friday night, we went to Cowboy Star. We split the fried sweetbread appetizer - my only complaint was that there was not more sweetbread. Otherwise, delish! Then we shared the porterhouse for two. EXCELLENT! They served it rare, like we ordered. They gave me a choice of veggies - I had spinach, he had peas. Came with mashed potatoes. I ordered bone marrow. The waiter forget to bring it so when I asked he brought it on the house. Closest thing to my fave dinner in Paris at L'AOC.
Next day we had breakfast at JSix. Good service - waiter always kept our water and coffee filled. The house smoked salmon was great.
We went to Neighborhood for lunch. Amazing selection of beers. Very good pub food! Friendly service. Wish I had something like this in my 'hood - West LA.
Dinner at Cafe Chloe. Another very good meal. Ordered a bacon tarte appetizer that was okay. Tomato soup was delicious, with a hint of spice. I had the steak frites. Fries are as addictive as people wrote! Hubby had the duck, which he demolished.
Next day, Sunday, we ate at Bread on Market. Okay pastries and a delicious cuban sandwich. Good coffee. Could be cleaner inside. The flowers on the tables were covered in gnats.
We also got ribeyes steaks at the butcher shop at Cowboy Star. Had them for dinner at home in LA. Excellent meat though lacking the in great crust we had at the restaurant!
Again, thank you fellow Chowhounds!

Dinner in Gaslamp district

Hmmm, I don't know if I want to tell him that I gave him the wrong directions! We always have fights over this. I insist my directions were right - he just mistook them! ;o)

I've continued to read the board - some people recommend Starlight and 1500 Ocean. Thoughts?

Dinner in Gaslamp district

I just sent my husband to Cafe Chloe this morning for breakfast - he's there at a conference, staying at the Omni. Said it was closed and another restaurant was opened in it's place.
I'm planning on joining him this weekend. Want to stay local - we're from LA so love the thought of walking everywhere! So for the best steaks, people seem to agree on Cowboy Star?
For seafood, what would people recommend? Oceanaire?

Any suggestions where to get high end appliances in Los Angeles?!

There's Carlsons - they had the fastest delivery when our fridge died right before Christmas. Bay Cities is also good. Snyder Diamond's prices are higher than most, I've found.

A can opener that can open Thai curries and Mexican menudos?

I have an OXO ergonomic opener that will BARELY (if at all) open my canned goods from Thailand and Mexico - cans that have a shorter metal top that American cans. I've tried other openers and thrown them out as they don't work either. Any ideas? Certainly I'm not the only one with this problem!?

MY TOP 10+ LA BBQ JOINTS - LONG - W/ PICS

Went to Phillips at their newer Crenshaw location this Sat nite and ordered what we always get - a slab of pork ribs with hot sauce, a pint of greens and a pint of beans. Excellent as always. I can't think of a time that we had a bad take-out meal from there, but we never waver from this order (well, sometimes we add mac n cheese or their 7-up cake).
