NOW MAGAZINE BEST OF TORONTO

The topic in the original post was NOW's reader-chosen Best Of list and I agree with many other posters, that is, it is not for me. The solution is quite simple, don't fret over it, just don't read it. Some posters have switched to a discussion of NOW's regular reviewers Almost always their names appear with the original review) and I generally enjoy reading what Stephen Davey has to say. His selection is different from the Toronto daily papers and I think his coverage of restaurant types is quite good. I will not comment on the geopraphic uneveness in the selections, I haven't looked at this.

Are restaurants open in Toronto New Years Day?

There are some excellent hotel restaurants (this is not an oxymoron)in Toronto - I would expect they would be open.

What to do with my OLIVER BONACINI gift certificate?!!!

I agree with what has been said. Jump and Biff's are fine, however, I believe Canoe is the OB flagship location and is turning out great food. Keep in mind that depending on your wine tastes you could be spending $200 to $400 at Canoe (for two).

Regarding Par-fyum, Chef Stephen Vardy (ex of Beckta) left as Par-fyum Chef on December 1. His replacement is Che Chartrand who was Vardy's Sous at Par-fyum and at Beckta.

Centro on an expense account...what should I have?

I was at Centro at the beginning of November for a special occasion meal - it was not free but it was worth every penny. We started with the "perfect oysters" as an appetizer, my partner had the rack of lamb and I had the beef tenderloin.
The setting, service and food were truly first class.

Mediocre meal at Monsoon

In fact the Chef Winlai Wong, her husband Sous Chef Sam Chao and others are no longer there. Is it closing?

The Academy of Spherical Arts

Since you're not getting much response I will add my observations that are now two (perhaps 3)years old. I found the ASA to be a fun place for a night of pool and drinking and/or eating. On one occasion I had a sit-down meal which as I recall was fine. It isn't cheap. You should check to make sure the pool areas are available at the time you want to go, they do often rent out their spaces for parties and at this time of year that may be a problem.
My preference for pool is the Charlotte Room, 19 Charlotte (Spadina and King) the food is not a problem but they do not really have sit-down facilities, mainly stools at the bar-type ledges at the pool tables.

Peridot?

We were at Peridot in early September and had disappointing meals. The manager and server were very friendly and helpful, however, the food was poorly prepared. I had the fish special which was very much overdone (not my favorite way to prepare fish) and my partner's lamb was so overdone that she could not eat it - very unusual for her. Perhaps this was an off night for the kitchen. It was late-ish but people came in after us and the room was essentially empty and I sensed that perhaps the manager was somehow involved with the cooking. Off night or not there are just too many places I want to try that I am unlikely to go back - this is perhaps my loss.

Has anyone been to the Fifth Grill?

J.P. Challet has only recently (less than a month)returned as Executive Chef so keep that in mind when reviewing any postings. Perhaps Fifth is his venue, I was disappointed with the product towards the end of JP's days at Bouchon and from Le Select when he was there.

I believe Claudio leaves at the end of September - too bad because I believe Claudio was Senses and won't be easy to replace.

Thanks, makes sense as my recollection is it is a better space - but I haven't been there since it was the Bermuda Onion (great jazz!).

Wolfgang and Trevor

If this info has been posted already, sorry, I missed it.

In the Star last night there was the notice of a Liquor Licence application for "Wolfgang Puck Gourmet Restaurant" at 131 Bloor W. That's the Colonnade - perhaps in the space on the mezzanine east of Dynasty. I haven't been by there recently I am assuming Dynasty is still there.

Also, yesterday I was on Wellington and decided to see what the latest note on 38 Wellington E. said - there have been a few since Bouchon moved out. The new note looks serious, "Trevor Kitchen & Bar", opening soon, and Trevor Wilkinson (ex Executive Chef of Lobby, Jump) is advertising for staff for both ends of the house.

Innocenti...any word?

Since Blowfish and Century Room have overlapping ownerships perhaps both OnDaGo and cream are correct - now we just need to clear up Tony's situation.

I don't recall seeing any review on reds since their new Executive Chef, Michael Steh, joined them around the beginning of June. If you do go perhaps you could tell us what you think.

Sunset Grill @ Yonge & Wellesley

Re:Son Lok, I have been twice and have very much enjoyed the food (but, I am no expert on Chinese food - I just know what I like). Son Lok has moved here from The Grange where they occupied large (and costly)space. Son Lok was actually re-named from Yong Lok (a very popular restaurant in its time) at the Grange when the owner/chef moved off and took the name with him.

Luce

Sorry, I am not a lawyer and I wasn't trying to deflate the issue you raised, I simply did not think "sold" was the correct word. I didn't mean to suggest Germain did not pay to take it back but if the Rubino's were leasing the space from Germain and did not own it, I did not understand how they could sell it back to Germain.

Luce

I am not sure "sold" is the right word, I believe the Germain Group who own the hotel took it back - but I suspect there is a lot more to the story. The Germain Group's Auberge Hatley in Quebec burned down in March and will not be re-opened so Germain had a few people they could move into Chez Victor (the replacement for Luce).

Toronto: Cafe Nervosa in Yorkville

L'Espresso Bar Mercurio is in the residence but its parent Bar Mercurio is across the street a bit west of the n/w corner of Bloor and St. George - this is more like a regular restaurant.

Toronto Restaurants - Has BYOW influenced your choice? [moved from Toronto]

For me it has not made any difference but unlike you I do not have a large selection of "good wines" at home - if I did it could well make a difference. I would be far more influenced to know that a restaurant was prepared to participate in tne THTR (Take Home The Rest) program. They need not need a special licence to do this (as they do for BYOW) but must ensure the cork is driven flush when it leaves the restaurant. I would probably buy more wine - either a second bottle or a red and a white if I knew I could walk out with what is left over. I remain totally perplexed why restaurants are not doing this.

Jamie Kennedy - Wow! 1.5 Stars! - Food really THAT bad?!

There must be some infighting at Torstar:
Read Linda Barnard (who sat in for Amy when she was on leave):
http://www.toronto.com/restaurants/ar...
and Alan Vernon (who Linda replaced):
http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_08...
for quite different opinions.
I have been at JKGM and do not agree with Amy's review.

THE EX - food and memories...

The first visit I remember was when the EX re-opened after WWII. I recall the original Food Building as having a very low ceiling but the big draw were the free samples - every display had them and they were worth waiting for. I remember peameal bacon sandwiches, and ice cream waffle sandwiches (though not as good as those in the basement of Eaton's Annex).

La Palette - on the downward slope ?

Shamez was an original co-owner with Michael and took over ownership when Michael left. In my visits he has typically been very visible in the front of the house and I would be very surprised if it were he that was rude and snide - I have always found him to be very professional.

(Toronto) Front street around Jarvis and Church - For tonight

Many of the places in that area would be difficult to get out of for less than $25. Have you tried Jason George at 100 Front E., just east of Jarvis? Decent food and not too pricey.

I too found the cheese cart at Biff's excellent - I have not tried it since Steve, the cheese sommelier, left but let's hope the quality has been maintained. I have also enjoyed the cheese plate at Pangaea.
