Talde...is it worth it?
I don't know - I LOVED my Talde experience...
Normally, I would put the mixed reviews down to kitchen inconsistancy, HOWEVER, I went with 2 other guests,,,,and we all had COMPLETELY different likes, dislikes and mehs -
What dish was my absolute favorite - one person hated , the other thought was ok,,,, and so went all of our opinions on every single dish!
I have never had a dining experience quite like that..
But for me, I LOVED almost everything, and have been craving several of the dishes ever since...in fact I have GOT to get back, and I don't live close by,...
What discontinued products do you miss?
LOL!!
True...
Cool Suzi, thanks! wow. loads of pics and articles...they are quite the controversial subject! In one of the articles someone reckoned they must taste like the pb inside the cracker sandwiches...Yes! Thats exactly what I am imagining... And why I would like it - I always loved the texture of that stuff... Alas, they aren't available in my area." " P.B. Slices are sold in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Washington" oh well//Thanks again!!
What discontinued products do you miss?
I would assume it didnt go over very well! I mentioned it here at work, and no one ever heard of anything like it.
I have strange likes, so it may hve appealed to me!

Jiffy peanutbutter slices???!!!!!!!
What?
I never saw or heard of that!!
Slices of peanutbutter??
Weird!
But I woulda tried it!! Sounds intriguing!
What discontinued products do you miss?
Oh yes, Ice Cubes were the best!
And you reminded me - (Well, this is an old thread, so I may have posted this before - sorry!) but, when I was a kid, every New Years eve, my mom would buy frozen hor dourves.
The brand was Red L.
A few boxs of pigs in blanket, and then a few boxes of assorted...potato puff, mini quiche, and a bleu cheese puff.
Man, they were good. I LOVED them, and it was such a special treat!
As I got older, and into cooking, I wouldn't think to buy frozen stuff....but now that I am even older, and becoming nostalgic, I find myself craving childhhood, crappy type foods.
I was litterally devastated to find Red L doesnt make these anymore! :(
Oh well...
Family foods I thought was normal
We used to dip celery in sugar...hmm - that sounds pretty good right now!
Family foods I thought was normal
I totally agree with everything you said!
I will eat it, but I don't see how the cheese compliments the pie in any way.
Just like last night, my friend insisted that I try a hot dog with cheese, which I had never had before. It was that melty Velveeta type on top of a hot dog.
The cheese tasted good, in the way that crappy cheese sometimes does - and the hot dog tasted good...but together - meh!
The cheese didnt compliment the dog in any way - in the way that mustard or sauerkraut do......much like apple pie and cheddar!
Where should we eat in Bruges?
Agree.
I had a wonderful meal there last year; it was our best meal in Bruges.
I had been to bruges 10 years ago, and every meal was stupendous....last year, though - not so much...I was actually pretty disappointed in our other meals there this time.
Weird/Bad Food Related Dates
LOL
Definitely!
Haven't had any dating oppertunites as of yet. (I am not ready for online dating) and I dont know any single men....BUT...when the time comes, I swear - food is going to be a huge factor this time.
I am just beginning to love cooking again..I cook for friends and co-workers, and the joy is coming back...
Wow - to have a partner that shared my joy - wow.
I am excited at the mere prospect!
Cold Food
I have no idea, but I feel like I just saw it...its not from "The Right Stuff"?? is it?
Top Chef: where are they now (ongoing)
Ha!
I know I got giddy when I saw Dale Talde - I imagine, I might embarrass myself if I actually saw Stefan!
**sigh**
Foods that unreasonably gross you out...
He said he didnt like "the taste"
They definitely taste like Baily's!
But he drinks Irish car bombs - which is Bailys and beer or some such crazy combo!
Foods that unreasonably gross you out...
oh, I hope my rants don't come across as serious..
I am just venting my frustration, but it's really, all in good fun.
We are very close, indeed, and our relationship is such that it's ok that I chased him down to get an opinion...and it's okay for him to tell me he thinks my food sucks. It's all good humored indeed.
I would never really want to cook for someone sour about it!
He claimed today, that he finds most of my food to be "delightful". So with that, I will keep cooking and baking for him..
What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?
This is a very old and long thread, and I may have actually posted about this awhile ago - because there is one food - which I litterally had only once - years and years and years ago, I adored it, and was captivated, and have never seen anything like it ever again....
When I was a kid, about 35 years ago, my best friend's family took me to a Sicialian *club* in Brooklyn,
I remember there being a huge espresso machine, a few pastries and I guess an ice cream freezer.
My friend ordered in Italian, and what I got was a cold bun filled with lemon ice. It looked like a Chinese pork bun..
It was the strangest thing I had ever eaten, but I LOVED it!
If there is anyone out there who knows what I am talking about, please respond!
I have done google searches and have never come across anything similar.
What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?
Thanks pie22, I only just saw this!
Wow, glad to know they still kind of exist.
Does the place also dip in melted cheddar cheese?
The stands at Ga used to have a vat of hot fudge and a vat of melted fake Velveeta type cheese...
Both looked good, but I always went for the chocolate.
Foods that unreasonably gross you out...
Ok, so -
Yesterday, I made mini Baily's Irish Cream choc. chip cupcakes, with Irish Cream buttercream, for the office.
Everyone was loving them.
Big hit.
Said picky guy ate one while standing at my desk...
There was no comment. Silence. Ouch.
I sent him an e-mail saying "Not impressed?"
He calls me and says: "Not my thing."
(I said I knew it when he didnt say anything and he said "Well, i know if I don't have anything nice to say, I won't say anything"
What a charmer!
Oh dear lord!
Whats not to like?
He said he didnt like the taste of the Baily's...
Here's the thing -I'm kind of a determined type - the more things he doesnt like, the more it makes me want to make things he does like.
Am I just fighting a losing battle here?
Top Chef Texas -- Reunion
In Heathers defense, Ty-lor worked for her, and he genuinely likes her.
I think because she is a bigger gal, and her voice is harsh - she comes across worse than she actually is...
I'm not saying she is sweet, but just not as bad as she seems to be perceived,
Top Chef Texas -- Reunion
Oh, I do too Mariacarmen, and actually, what I meant was that I still like the samurai look...though, I didnt think his hair looked bad at the reunion..
Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
A few years back, I went to a taping of Emerils show - I had never been a fan, but he was so genuinely warm and kind - during the breaks he talked to everyone and had the children in the audience come up to the stage for treats - watching his interaction with them was truly heartwarming to say the least.
I gained a huge amount of respect and admiration for him after that..
Top Chef Texas -- Reunion
Oh, I forgot to mention -
Was anyone else surprised by Moto Chris' quirky personality and humor?
I, personally never caught that at all!
The clips they showed of him last night, acting a bit silly, and quriky, I found to be very charming and endearing, but throughtout the show, I kind of thought he had no personality at all!
(though, I did always say I liked his hair!! - still do!)
Top Chef Texas -- Reunion
I enjoyed the show.
I did cringe a bit with all the Beverly stuff but I loved"Mediocre Chef" segment- I thought that was pretty funny.
I also loved how Ed admitted he was a dick at the bbq challenge.
Top Chef: where are they now (ongoing)
I finally did get to Talde - I was really impressed!
The food is tasty and very clever.
Dale was there, and he seemed really cool!
I couldnt believe how laid back he was - if you didnt know him - he might have been the dishwasher!
Yet, he was walking around and chatting, and seemed genuinely interested to know how people liked the food. Very personable in a genuine way.
I must admit, I was kind of giddy seeing him, and he is very good looking!

lol!
Completely off topic -
I went to Dale Taldes restaurant in Brooklyn Tuesday night - It was amazing!
Really clever food!
Saw Dale as well, and he was humble, very laid back - and DAMN sexy.
:)

Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
oh, yes, that's how I see it as well.
I thought Pauls dad was adorable!
Talde
Had an absolutely spot on meal at Talde the other night!
We were a table of three, and we are all old farts so we got there just at 5:00pm, on a Tuesday, so we didnt have to deal with a crowd. It was a good plan because we walked right in and sat down.
Chef must really make it a point to make sure the wait staff are well educated about each dish, because our server knew allot - even down to what was making the spicy mustard served on the side of the dumplings -taste so good...
We had:
PERILLA LEAF - -
for $5 - I thought this dish was incredibly impressive, nutty, fishy, spicy, sweet - many flavor explosions just in one bite...and I liked that each bite was slightly different.
SAIGON CREPES-
My dining companions were drooling over these.
I loved the crispy pancake. I guess it was potato/potato flour - not sure though, i meant to ask, but I forgot - there were too many great things going on - anyway, whatever they were, they were good!! However, for me, the inside was too much "green"... bits of shrimp here and there...I didnt get any bacon, but I let my companions finish the rest, since they were loving it so much.
SHRIMP TOAST-
delicious.
We all agreed it was just yummy, and the gravy reminded us of a gourmet shrimp w lobster sauce taste.
PRETZEL PORK & CHIVE DUMPLINGS -
My favorite of the apps.
The pretzel taste was tsuble but there, and some bites were more pretzely than others - again - I like the contrasting bites, but some may think "inconsistant".
The pork inside was juicy and tasty - and the spicy mustard was KILLER. I wanted to lick the bowl.
KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN
Very good, cruncy, juicy, spicy........ but by this point , I was getting filled up, and I only took 2 pieces of this. (Entree portions are HUGE as they ae meant to be shared)
One of us proclaimed this was her favorite dish of the night.
SHORTRIBS KARE-KARE
Wow.
This was stellar, the meat was tender, tasty, perfectly cooked, and the peanut-y coconuty sauce rreminded me of the massaman curry.
The BLACK PEPPER BUTTER TOAST was suggested to sop up that sauce.
I liked the bread - it was peppery and yummy, but to me, it did not go well at all with the shortrib sauce. I didnt get that at all.
CRISPY OYSTER & BACON PAD THAI -
Sounded better than it was. Like standard PT, but with fried oysters on top. The oysters didnt even taste that great - I left one sitting there, and the PT was kind of *slimy* to me. I like my noodles on the dry side. Again, I never got any bacon.
BANANA LEAF STICKY RICE -
I personally, wouldnt have picked this dish, but WOW was I glad my auntie did!
I LOVED it...the taste, the texture...and yes! I finally got me some bacon - and man was it good!
I wanted the whole order to myself.
Luckily the other 2 didnt care at all for it, so I did get allot!
the veg of the night was Brussels sprouts. Sound dull?
No - these were to die for - crispy, and insanely tasty..made with some kind of Asian pesto - I remember pistachios being one of the ingredients.
Then, I was really disappointed that there was only ONE dessert option. I thought that was pretty poor...and to boot it was Halo Halo, which isnt something I would choose either..
but we got it, to try.
Holy Crap.
I LOVED it.
I would say it was the best thing I had all night.
It was a big bowlwith a coconutty/herby ice with tapiaoca balls, grilled pineapple, (and maybe banana?), Captain Crunch...probably other stuff that i can't remember.
It was amazing, and my description is certainly not doing it justice.
The ice was subtle, and smooth, but yet TASTY...the stuff thrown in wasnt gratuitous - the captain crunch added great texture...I loved it, and sat there with it until the bowl was finished!
it was huge, btw, and my companions didnt love it as much as I did, so I ate allot of it, and miss it now.
Dale was there, and having been a fan of his, I was quite excied to see him!
He seemed really humble and laid back.
Price for final meal was $175 with drinks (excluding tip) - thought that was brlliant!

Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
Various thoughts -
I enjoyed the finale WAY more than I thought I was going to..
In fact, my brother was dying to talk about it, so he forced me to watch it last night!
Sarah did nothing to annoy me, and in fact, I thought she handled everything really well -AND that her menu looked great.
Had to read through the posts to realize what Grayson's clam comment meant!!
Really liked the format of the challenge.
Liked also, that half the judges went to one restaurant first, and then switched.
That seemed really fair to me.
Very happy Paul won!
and of course, a HUGE thank you to Linda!
You do an AMAZING job, and we all really apreciate it!
Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
Just curious, do you mean about mother-daughter relationships - or about making your parents proud? Or both?
Of course I know nothing about the man, but Pauls dad looked really warm and sweet - he was all smiley, and we saw him wiping a tear away...
He didnt seem the kind of man who would be tough to please...but, I guess Paul had a little bit of a rough youth, so maybe it's been hard for him to break out of the stigma that must have caused...
Top Chef Texas Finale Part 2 - Ep. #17 - 02/29/12 (Spoilers)
I'm pretty sure they must have asked her straight after she lost...
I am sure it would be a really upsetting moment, but I wasn't keen on her choice of words...
