Best red velvet cake?--not cupcake!

So, I'm really tired of the traditional yellow cake with buttercream frosting. I don't think I can ingest any more of that frosting without feeling like my teeth are going to rot. I've decided to go with a red velvet cake for an upcoming birthday instead. I don't really have a preference between a vanilla and cream cheese frosting, but I would like some thoughts on where to find a great, moist red velvet cake!

Birthday dinner for 10- Fun, young, fairly inexpensive

Hi All,

I have a 23rd birthday coming up, which also falls a couple of days before I'll be leaving NYC for good and moving back to Chicago. I'd love to have a combo birthday/farewell dinner on 8/15 with some close friends. I'm looking on the east side, Midtown and below.

I'd like to spend max (with tax and tip) about $40 a person. I'd love the food to be great, but I'm realistic about what I can get for that price, and am willing to settle for pretty good food, good drinks, and a fun, low-key and not overly trendy atmosphere. I'm open as far as cuisine, though I was thinking Mexican might be a good option--after all, margaritas certainly seem festive!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Top Chef restaurants

24 Prince is Nikki from the most recent season's restaurant down in Nolita.

Fried Mac n Cheese Bites

24 Prince also has mac n' cheese rolls. I thought they were pretty good, though I think I would like pretty much anything involving cheese, noodle and frying!

Salt--Thoughts?

I have a friend coming into town and thought to take her here. She appreciates good food, but isn't particularly adventurous and is more into the dining "experience"-- nice decor, good service, etc. Can anyone share their experiences at Salt?

Craftbar?

I've been a couple of times. I'd say the food is fine, average at best. I like the pecorino-stuffed risotto balls, though I think you can find better ones in the same neighborhood at Bar Stuzzichini. I remember being disappointed by the ravioli with apples and trompettes- overly buttery and bland. The brown sugar cake is pretty good.Be aware that the menu currently listed on menupages.com isn't completely accurate, as there have been some updates.

Service has also been spotty both times. Last time, they graciously and quickly replaced a drink I sent back, but then we were hard-pressed to get the waiter's attention for the rest of the meal. It seems like the waitstaff is nice and friendly when they do come over, but getting their attention is the real difficulty!

I Need Your Help! - Frozen Yogurt Spots

Berrywild is so good. Better than Pinkberry. The coffee flavor is especially good, and really tastes like coffee, whereas the new Pinkberry coffee just tastes gross, like a weird coffee additive on top of their regular yogurt.

Borough Food & Drink- recently

I've read some not so stellar reviews of Borough Food & Drink. And yet, I've also recently heard some good things about it and seen that it's gotten some positive recognition. Knowing that a restaurant's food and service can be rocky at the beginning, can anyone who has been there within the past few months offer an updated review on this restaurant?

Many thanks.
