Roy Choi's POT

no, as noted by weinermobile upthread

if you go for breakfast, the congee and breakfast pizza are both excellent (but both are available throughout the day)

Non-Pork Broth Ramen Shops in LA?

I'm in the same boat as you. Ikemen does a great vegetarian miso broth, in addition to their chicken broth. If you're willing to branch out into udon, Marugame Monzo uses bonito (fish) broth and that place is awesome.

Bulgarini Gelato coming to Grand Central Market

Been to the GCM cart a couple times now... both times, the gelato was very icy and the young gent at the counter reminded me of Michael Cera both in look and his aloofness. I really want to like this place, but right now, I don't know if I feel right paying a premium for a product that hasn't been given its proper due by the servers and company selling it.

I'll try it again in a couple months; 'til then I'll just get my caffeine fix instead of my sugar fix :)

Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!

All Angolo is excellent. Ardmore/3rd.

Menu (via Yelp) is here: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/E2yCSD...

edit: I really like their Marinara pizza, but it was a bit too salty for my dining companions. Everyone liked the Frutti di Mare pizza, though. Great service, too.

Do you order take away from restaurants that you would never actually eat at?

Bon Chon Chicken in KTown has a very depressing interior that doesn't exactly beckon me to stay inside. Great chicken, though!

ISO unripened pecans!

Kind of strange request... my mom needs unripened pecans for a recipe. Anyone know where I can pick some up? Preferably in the Valley, but I don't mind driving :) Thanks!!

REVIEW: Priyani, Northridge

Hey crew!

Tried this place many months ago (and kind of forgot, actually) after a visit to CSUN. The coconut sambal is as amazing as DU mentioned; it has a very lovely, floral aftertaste after that initial kick of heat.

We had this jackfruit curry that was great; it put the jackfruit front and center, with the rest of the ingredients (standard indian/sri lankan curry-style) providing a dry heat AND a sweet aftertaste. Man, this was so good when ladled on the string hoppers (so ftw). The biriyani was weak, but that's because other places (or my mom O:)) do it better; the hardboiled+fried egg was cold and, despite all the wonderful veggies and all else tossed in there, the dish was quite bland.

I'm surprised that this place isn't inundated w/ CSUN students. Cheap, delicious and (quite possibly) the one place where I've simply ignored the country music blasting from the TV.

Great review as usual, DU! Glad to see you back in the Valley ;)

[[edit: omg this place is going to be crowded now. WORTH IT.]]
[[edit2: Go through the deli and into the parking lot; Priyani will be the first door to your left.]]

What to eat around Torrey Pines

TapEx is pretty good! Pricier than the Regents location, afaik. Croutons rocks, as well.

Boba from Tapioca Express + Yogurt World = awesome after a show at the loft.

What to eat around Torrey Pines

UCSD Student chiming in here:

On campus>
- The Indian place is.. just okay. (But then again, I'm picky... blah.)
- Santorini's is decent, but not much better than Daphne's (@ LJ Village Square); it is probably my favorite place to eat on campus. If you are driving (or catching the 101), a trip down to Village Square is advisable.

Off campus>
- The International Market and Grill is delicious!

Will check out Board and Brew; thanks geekyfoodie! I'll post up if I have any other suggestions.

The Infield

It really isn't that good. The menu is intriguing. The fact that they offer Hebrew National, Dodger, Sabretts and Papa Cantella dogs drew me in but... really, the preparation left too much to be desired. Had the "Fire Starter" on the Cantella dog and it was just... okay. Nothing special. The meat tasted bland and the toppings outweighed the dog a bit too much (and they weren't that good either... esp. the cheese!).

The guys working the counter were cool. They had Doc Browns root beer. But those were the only pluses. I really, really want to like this place. But I can't. Yet. Maybe it'll get better...

QT's is damn good. I just get my food and walk around the block while eating it.

Best ice cream in Los Angeles- an updated poll

Not sure if it's **the best**, but Milk is pretty good. Their coffee toffee bonbons and cookies and cream are excellent.

On a side note... only in LA is it possible to discuss the best ice cream in early December. :)

My boss wants to take the office out to some place in the valley that "isn't Benihana," so I've come here seeking assistance.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Which totally freakin' owns in my book.

Root Beer in San Diego

I'd like to second Pizza Port; their root beer is really good (the root beer float and pizzas are great as well; ask for the whole-grain crust)!

In fact... I'm going to eat there now.

For lovers of Indian Food: A Gem in K-Town

Makkah has great food; the chicken (any of it) is always on point.

Sorry for the thread hijack but... ahh... Bengali food. Didn't expect this to turn up here at all! :) You hounds surprise me sometimes.

One quick note is that Jafran has been renamed to Pardesh (with a very ugly yellow and red side... what an eye sore). Yeah, confusing, I know.

In terms of food, I'd have to rank it like this (best to worst):
New Pardes (try the Muglai Paratha... .so greasy, but so good! Four pieces for 5 bucks.), Asia Mart, Deshi (special mention for always having samosas and chai on deck :)), Pardesh, Aladdin

In terms of sweets:

Asia Mart (try the sweet yogurt, it's AWESOME!) and New Pardes have a tie (same supplier), Aladdin, Deshi

Aladdin often gets props for being the first "big" Bangla shop to open out here, but it's quality has really declined in the past few years. Unfortunately. The owner actually lives across the street from me, so I get to bug him from time to time.

Oh, a special note for those of you wanting to have some catering done for your next party:
Catering-wise, Deshi is the best. Don't bother with the others.

Armenian Sandwich in the Valley

On Oxnard and Woodman, there is the Superior Meat Market, which also goes by the Kabob Factory. They have a sandwich similar to the one that you're describing AND (at one point) had a "best food in LA" sign from the LA Times out front.

Maybe this is the place you were talking about? And even if it wasn't, go anyway. You won't regret it :)

Best ramen in LA?

Heya, I believe you mean Nippon Ramen, not Nihon. :)
I used to go there everyday after-school *tear*.
Truly a great bowl of ramen and definitely the greatest in the SF Valley.
