Unrefrigerated side/snack
Oh, I do this with pepperoni and mozzarella all the time. I like the idea of changing out the meats and cheeses. Thanks, katecm.
Quick eats near Bob Carr theatre, Orlando?
Thank you for your reply. I rather thought that would be the case, but I figured if anyone would know of a gem, it would be you.
Quick eats near Bob Carr theatre, Orlando?
Is there any place near the Bob Carr theatre where I could get a good quick bite before the show this evening? I'll be driving in from Haines City(SW) after work, so, depending on traffic, may not have time for more than a sandwich on the run.
Walking distance would be great, but I have a car, so not a big deal.
Thanks so much.
Impromptu Meals - how do I plan for them?
I lay the pepper strips or portions of herbs on a cookie sheet and freeze them. Then I put the frozen bits in baggies. I've found this keeps the bags from clouding up or forming ice crystals.
McDonald's Happy Meal Cookies
I had some of these recently in Florida, within the last month. Yes, they are still in the character shapes. I noticed them by accident, the packaging is completely different and the cashier had no idea what I meant by McDonaldland cookies. They are in a white bag with red and yellow label and hang on a clip stand.
Yes, I do think they're more shortbread than animal cracker. A few years back I used to find Dora the Explorer cookies at Target that were very similar. I think buttery with the tiniest hint of lemon is accurate, too.
First time visitor to Haines City
Fiesta Mexicana on Ingraham Ave in the newly renovated downtown part of Haines City is quite good. Their tortilla soup has good days and bad days, but most things seem to be consistently good. There's a good variety of enchiladas and great sopapillas to finish the meal.
Best Products at Cost Plus World Market?
The Nyaker ginger thin cookies are my favorite. I also got some kind of sparkling mock margarita that was really good.
Favorite Ways to Cook Risotto?
Mine's not particularly healthy, I use veggie stock, white wine, coconut milk and finish with fresh mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes.
As to the risotto balls, I find that after it's been refrigerated, it's not has difficult as it seems it would be to make into a ball. If I've any leftover mozzarella, I'll wrap the risotto around a small piece. I bake mine on a baking sheet with parchment and am happy with the results. I'm not a fan of breading on anything, really, so I leave out that step.
How PERFECT is this for Halloween!?
I like the looks of these. I wouldn't scrape away quite so much apple myself.
We're having a belated Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon at work this week. I'm wondering if I turned the caramel into a dulce de leche, do you think I could get away with bringing these?
HELP! Need Rijsttafel dish idea...
You could make perkedel, potato fritters. They make a nice change from the saucier dishes. Gado-gado has pretty straight forward ingredients that should be available anywhere. The green bean and cucumber salad is nice as a change from the spicy stuff, too.
where is the best potato in the world?
The best potato I ever ate was from Lebanon. It was just so potato-ey.
Repurposing cornbread mix?
I use cornbread mix to make black bean patties. I usually use one small packet of mix and one can of black beans and 1/4 cup salsa. Put the dry mix, drained beans and salsa in a bowl and mash together with a potato masher or just with a fork, making sure everything is mixed together, but not pureed. Form into patties, then fry or bake till edges are crispy. I mix a little chili powder and lime juice into Greek yogurt and serve on the side.
70s Government Cheese
My dad and brother swear that the American cheese pack at Costco tastes just like the old government cheese and keep it in their refrigerators for grilled cheese and burger toppings. I'm a Velveeta grilled cheese fan myself, so I'm not sure of the authenticity. It's just too bad you have to buy so much to try it.
PF Chang's Frozen Dinner
I tried the sweet and sour chicken and thought it was quite good.
Making butter with tweens
I work with inner city middle schoolers. Most of my students probably don't have any idea where their food comes from. I think they'd really enjoy seeing cream turn to butter, especially if they had something yummy to spread it on when it's finished.
Good luck with your program. It sounds great.
Chocolate Covered What?
My grandma puts peanut butter between two ritz crackers and dips that in chocolate. It sounds strange, but it works. The ratio of peanut butter, crunchy crackers and chocolate just doesn't work the same with those already made mini-cracker sandwiches. 've told her to save me some.
Cooking tempeh
I like to slice the tempeh thin and bake it so that the outside is crispy and the inside is still soft. Then I make a peanut sauce and serve it over rice or add the crispy tempeh to peanut noodles. My easy peanut sauce is peanut butter (natural), sweet soy sauce, crushed garlic, a dash of sambal and a little coconut milk to thin it.
Hot Chocolate: Marshmallow or Whipped Cream?
For me it depends on the chocolate. For dark chocolate, I prefer whipped cream. For a milk chocolate, I prefer marshmallows.
My hot chocolate is made with skim milk because it's what I keep on hand, but I wouldn't insist on it if someone else were making the drink.
Mmmm, think I must go turn down the a/c and make some hot chocolate now.
Good cheescake crust- not graham cracker
I found that Marie biscuits make the crust most similar in taste and texture to a graham cracker crust if you're trying to keep it familiar. You can also find recipes for making graham crackers online, although you may not be able to find the right flours in your region.
What to do with lots of yellow lentils?
I like honey-baked lentils. It's basically 2:1 water to lentils; for 1 cup lentils, I add 1 T. honey, 2T soy sauce, 2 T oil, 1 clove garlic and any spices. I usually use a curry blend, but dill works nicely, too, and salt and pepper. Put everything in a casserole dish, cover and bake at 350 for about 45 min.. I add carrots and red peppers sometimes. It's a versatile dish and goes well with baked potatoes, rice or flatbread.
New Trader Joe's yea/nay thread
Yea to the Sweet, Salty and Nutty Trek Mix (or those words in some order--just finished the bag, so it's not in front of me now.) It's got peanuts, cashews, almonds, honey-roasted peanuts and cashews and peanut brittle. The whole mix is just right, although I'll confess to searching for bits of brittle to savor. I also enjoyed the sea salt brownies.
Nay to the shelf-packaged dhal makhani and the cilantro-lime prepared rice. The dhal smelled like what I remember chefboyardee to smell like and the rice was just too salty.
help - what to take to penang??
I've only been to Penang on holiday, so I don't know what they have readily available. Singapore, though, is just a short flight away and you can find most anything you'd need, including the tetley.
best crunch factor on chicken fingers
Yes to Cap'n Crunch. I took it one step further and added finely chopped peanuts. I did try peanut butter cap'n crunch, but they're softer and don't have the same texture.
Solo female diner in HK, Singapore & KL
I see you're only going to be in Singapore one day. If it's not a Sunday, you'll miss out on the great brunch experience mentioned in a previous post. The Tiffin Room at Raffles Hotel does a tea everyday and a buffet dinner, if you're interested in that. If you do find yourself in Singapore on a Sunday, I'd advise avoiding Little india. It becomes so crowded that I've felt unsafe on my own, even knowing the language. Any other day of the week, it's a fun, vibrant place to be. I usually stick to street snacks in Little India.
Most of the hawker centers in Singapore are fine for a single traveler. The East Coast center is nice for dinner as you can sit at a table and watch the sunset at the beach. Sorry, I don't know the names of the individual food stalls, but if you ask the taxi driver for the "New" East Coast hawker center, the last satay stall on the far side of the entrance (if you're facing the beach, it's on your right) has some really good peanut sauce--nice and spicy. The young coconut drink is nice to cool down the spice. I've found that in Chinatown, the stalls on the street are better than any of the inside places.
It's probably blasphemous to eat in a mall food court when on vacation, but I love the roti prata at Vivocity Hawker center(the upstairs one.) The mall is near the Harbor and you can catch the rail to Sentosa at the upper level. Grab a roti prata on your way or after a morning spent walking around the island.
Enjoy your trip!
My Lime Tree is Ready, Help With Some Recipes
I make a honey-lime marinade--equal parts lime juice to honey-- for chicken. Bake the chicken, then garnish with lime slices. The chicken is nice on its own, but also works well with a pasta salad with vinaigrette.
ISO Sellerie Root
I found celery root in Wegman's a couple of weeks ago. The Wegman's in Fairfax, that is.
Need recipes or ideas for zatar and sumac
I like to add za'atar to my corn chowder. It gives it an unexpected kick.
Fresh garlic from the Greenmarket!
I usually roast a few bulbs and used them as spreads or in mashed potatoes or add to salsa or hummus.
Frozen (and all Related) Dinners?
Amy's meals are good. I like the chili bowl and the enchiladas.
I've also been known to give in to the Stouffer's draw, I like the corn souffle and the mac and cheese.
Canned Pumpkin--How Do You Use It (Besides Pie)
I use it for soup, too, but more of wintery soup, not spicy. I just substitute it for the potatoes in a creamy potato soup and add a pinch of cumin. I made the pumpkin and black been dip, too.
I also use it to make pumpkin bread, same recipe as banana bread, but substitute the pumpkin puree for bananas and add pie spices.
