Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?
Another bonus with a Costco membership is the complimentary "tire service" if you happen to hit a nail or something. I took the vehicle in to their tire bay center to have a leak fixed...No charge for the repair. The tires weren't even purchased at Costco...they were the car's original.
It sure helped me out on a Sunday morning. Who knew?
Garlic powder & onion powder vs garlic & onion
I am a huge user/consumer of fresh garlic, shallots and onions. I grow my own and hesitate to use store bought when my supply runs out (short growing season) I do a fall planting as well in an attempt to expand yield.
Having said that... garlic and onion powders are most useful in my pantry..for flour dredges, dry rubs, wet marinades etc.
For an all around dry rub that suits just about everything ..I always look toward Ted Reader's "Bone Dust" If there are ingredients you don't favor ..omit them. i.e I leave out the curry.
http://www.food.com/recipe/bone-dust-bbq-rub-50639
The recipe makes alot...and can be cut in half or a quarter or whatever...but I just find I have to make it more often.
Bringing fresh cream cheeses on plane from NY to California - how to keep from spoilage
I totally understand the desire to want to bring both the Bagels AND the cream cheese.....Sometimes it's about the superior flavor, .....nostalgia.....or the " I brought it special from NY" bragging rights factor..
Either way. pack the cream cheese in your checked bag. double bagged in large freezer ziplocks, encased in frozen gel packs for best results upon arrival.
I would not risk it as carry-on even if you did conjure up a way to keep it cool. One assumes you will take more than 3 oz....and the chances of having a diligent TSA worker assigning the cream cheese a "gel-like" moniker would be too chancey for me.
looking for seafood buffet in waikoloa. dinner buffets perferably. a good buffet with crab, lobster, primerib, anything like that.
The Surf, sand & stars buffet on the beach at 4S Hualalai is top notch.
http://www.fourseasons.com/hualalai/menu_2029/
Call them for reservations(a must) and pricing. I believe it to be similarly priced to the buffet at MK...perhaps slightly higher.
arctic char in place of salmon
I can not think of a recipe where Artic Char or say Rainbow trout could not be substituted for Salmon. The fish have similar textures and oil content making them adaptable to favored recipes.
Here is a link to the recipe I believe you are referencing..... ( For the convenience of other readers)

Foodies out there, any special recommendations for good local Christmas eats @ Kauai?
Fresh Poke at either Costco or Fish Express in Lihue are good options.
What Food were you forced to eat and hatted has a child ? [Moved from NAF]
Liver.......They would tell me it was a veal cutlet.....yeah right.....like one bite would confirm that deception....
Big Island local foods
Oh, it's a shame your visit won't encompass a Saturday on island....many of the popular markets have Saturday as their prime day. There are other options though.
http://www.konaweb.com/konaweb/farmer.shtml
The Anna Ranch market and the Waikoloa Beach King's Shops Wednesday markets may work for you. They are relatively new to the Big Island market and continue to add product vendors.
Big Island local foods
We like to check out the Homesteader's market on Saturday up in Waimea town.
http://hawaiihomegrown.net/reports/114-waimea-homestead-farmers-market
They have a variety of home grown and homemade products, They also have some wonderful food stalls that serve up some very tasty local dishes.
There are baked goods. We always try and pick-up some lilikoi shortbread from one vendor.....Jane's..I think it .....sells out fast.
For your situation at the 4S ......some products wouldn't be suitable...but we have a kitchen..so our food basket would differ a bit.
Palani French Bakers are there and have a Brioche loaf that is off the charts....toasted with lilikoi jam...it is spectacular. I take a loaf home as well.
As wonderful as the dining options at Hualalai are...and unless you are only there for a few nights....i would suspect you may well want to venture away from the resort for a few meals.
We like Manago....feels like you've stepped onto a 1950's movie set..
But my rec for killer Pizza is nearby Manago in Captain Cook.....Patz Pies. Out of this world NY style pizza . fresh ingredients, salads etc. They just recently moved locations into what used to be "paparoni's" We virtually head straight there from the airport.
Mike's BBQ serves up some wonderful options at the Kona International marketplace.
Kona coast Macadamia Nut factory has a small tour and sells chocolate covered macadamia bark....also in coffee country area.
http://www.konaoftheworld.com/
Green well farms is a good little tour in the area (coffee)
Going to Kauai for 11 days in November
Hamura's Saimin on Kress St is a definite must stop for a taste of local flavor. Order a large "special" and 2 BBq chicken stick, piece of lilikoi pie and their homemade"pretzel" cookies to go.
For fresh fish ...check-out Fish Express in Lihue across from Wilcox Memorial hospital and the Walmart.
Try and catch the fresh Malasadas offered by the lady just outside of KMart . She is there fleetingly and you will be lucky to catch her.
Sueoka's snack shop in Koloa town on the side of their grocery store has insanely cheap tasty food. Good hamburgers.
Pass on the BeachHouse...total Zoo. Hostesses with Mega attitude...a real turn-off. Mediocre food. Everyone pops up at Sunset and races outside..like they have never before seen a sun set. Totally disruptive and a definitive mood breaker. If the food was passable ..some might be able to look past the disruption...but sadly not the case.
For a lovely romantic setting...splurge meal Tidepools at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu is the place. Lovely setting....Terrific food.

Counter depth refrigerator...yes or no?
My sister bought one by mistake...didn't realize that it was designed that way. She is rather disappointed in it. There is a significant lack of space.....making placing platters etc in the fridge a nightmare. It makes things difficult if you like to entertain.
We just recently purchased a new refrigerator and during the shopping phase....if we encountered a "counter depth"....we quickly shut the door and moved on.
Kaui - Good Lunch
Hands down, I would take a short taxi ride to "Hamura's Saimin" right in Lihue on Kress St.
Sit at the counter and order an Extra large "Special", 2 chicken BBQ sticks and finish with a delicious piece of lilikoi chiffon pie.
I could just live on ______
Brie...., Goldeye....Sea salt Pita crackers
Ok...maybe some swisschard, tomatoes, garlic.
Supermarket/fish market poke in Maui, Hilo, and Kona
Foodland Farms, or KTA on the Big island...Delicious Tako Poke, Crab Poke, Ahi Poke...very fresh.
There is a good turnover of product in most of the markets.
Safeway in Kailua -Kona also has a good selection.
Samples to taste are offered almost everywhere...if you are particular on the seasoning.
Costco will also offer samples. Not available all days of the week however.
Best Spots to score great Sausage in Winnipeg
Thanks for the tips bubster.
How do you do those pork button strips on the grill. What a great idea! Do you marinade them?
I have only had them breaded, sauted then finished in the oven (Mother's rendition)
1993 Chateau Neuf de Pape Pere Anselme La Fiole
Thanks for weighing in Chef. Opening it will certainly solve the mystery.
Oops..must have hit the space bar on my header..
Do you go crazy for an item then stop liking it?
It's all about human nature with a little OCD sprinkled in on my Puffed rice Kashi ....everyday
1993 Chateau Neuf de Pape Pere Anselme La Fiole
So, I have this bottle of ChateauNeuf de Pape wine which we purchased back in the day and always meant to get around to it.
As time went by...I thought ...Yeah , we'lll open it for our next anniversary...
We liked the wine back in 1993...bought a few bottles of it if I remember correctly.
Is it still good?.
Has been stored on it's side in our Dining room wine rack.(Room temperature)
Best Spots to score great Sausage in Winnipeg
Well, this is a topic that I could go on and on about.......
The North end of Winnipeg usually satisfies my sausage cravings...but I know there are many a spot throughout the city.
Current favorites:
Karpaty (Bannerman& Mc Gregor) Best Smokies..hands down...all glistening and warm right out of the smoker. They also do a very meaty delicious coarse garlic sausage.
Wawel(Selkirk ave) : Great ham sausage for sandwiches and salami, Coarse garlic sausage is mighty tasty.
Tenderloin meats(Main St): Meaty garlic sausage rings, moist and chock full of ham. They also have a tasty all beef salami, wonderful corned beef(Tastes less salty than most other brands)
W.O.C> (Winnipeg Old Country)on Dufferin: Great spot to hit up for salami, pepperoni, ham sausage..you name it. been around forever.
European meats (Burrows); Additive Dobreceini (sp?)...like a smokie..great on the grill.
Striker's (Burrows): Best pepperoni ever!!! You can buy them fresh or already dried. You can keep them out on the counter at home for a couple of days(If they last) ..if you prefer. They also have a Killer homemade beef jerky...one spicy..one less so. Pretty terrific.
Most of the above mentioned spots are closed on Mondays...call ahead.
If you can't make to all the above stores at their original locations....There are a few places around town that carry some of the products:
i.e. Tenderloin products can be found at Harvest Bakery on Grant Ave
Wpg Old Country products at Price Chopper on Stafford
But sometimes...nothing beats a "Sausage Run" to the good ol' North end.
Anyone one else have any favorites?
Karpaty's closes for the month of July as a rule to allow their employees vacation
That reminds me...better stock up on those smokies (freeze well)
Best Chicken Wings in Sarasota.....
Love all varieties.....Just looking to dive into a platter of the ultimate wings.
Where to go??
Looking for your Favorite Maple Grove spots Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.
Thanks guys for all the ideas so far.
We will definitely venture out of Maple Grove for a good number of meals.....just wanted some recs for a quick start to the day or perhaps after a long day...something closeby.
Looking for your Favorite Maple Grove spots Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.
We have a 5 day visit to the Maple Grove area coming up and would love to hear Folk's recommendations for their favorite spots..or a "must order " item.
On our last visit we were at 3 Squares and tried a number of their dishes...all which were terrific. However from reviewing the on-line menu I see they seem to have taken the "Shrimp/crab cake" Benedict off the menu (dreamed of that dish...)
Casual places are preferred......however any Good chow recs are appreciated. Love Chinese cuisine.
Thanks.
Reasonable, Local Places near Hilton Waikaloa/ Volcano National Park// Kealalekua Bay/Hilo and the Hyatt Regency Maui
So lisa...... Your header asks for "local" suggestions to eat..but then you go on to name a good number of more"upscale" locales. Not exactly sure if my suggestions will fit what you are seeking..
Anyway..on Big Island, we always try to hit.
Patz Pies in Kealakekua....The BEST Pizza , hands down on the island. Just a little take-out window kinda place . A real character"Pat" turning out fresh pies with delicious ingredients. he makes his own sausage. Very friendly.Delicious pizza, whole wheat crust.
Island Fish & Chips; Located behind the King's Shops(near the HIlton), by the lake. They again are a take-out window operation serving lightly batted tempura fish(Ono or Mahi Mahi) Pineapple coleslaw and tasty fries. Good size serving.
Sansei at Queen's marketplace is another good spot to try. The have one on Maui as well. Check out there early bird specials(before 5:30) for 50% off pricing. Call ahead for this specials...you still end up waiting in line with many others to get a table.
Cafe Pesto in Hilo: Great spot for Lunch after touring the Farmer's market there. fresh Pasta dishes and unique Pizzas as well
Big Island Candies: The store /factory is located in Hilo and is always worth a spot. Beautifully package tasty treats...especially for bringing home. Check out their website to see some of their offerings.
Another recent discovery of ours has been the "Palani French Bakers" They make the most amazing breads. Their brioche is out of this world. You can find them at the Waimea homestead Market on Saturday, King's Shop's market (Wednesday a.m/early aft)...and I believe the Hawi market...not certain on those dates. That Brioche loaf ..toasted... with some pineapple /lilikoi spread is sublime.

What are you baking these days? June 2011, part 2 [old]
Yesterday, (Rainy)..I made a Banana Layer cake with a cream cheese icing , topped with crushed pecans and shaved dark chocolate.
I have a jar of capers. Now what?
So, how long do they last? I have a small jar that I forgot about...unopened.
Once I open things..like jars/sauces...I date them with a Sharpie markie and put into the fridge.
However this jar has never been opened. Yikes they might be 2 years old!
Still OK?
Our Vacation Reviews - Siesta Key & Sarasota, FL (LONG)
Great review cheereeo !
Enjoyable read for sure. We have been to many on your list and concur with your raves about Millie's.
You must try Blase Cafe in the Village. Their "Pasta Cynthia is amazing...a creamy Penne dish with artichoke and shrimp...
We love the food at Javier's We look forward to stopping in at Walt's now ..on your recommendation. Always seem to pass it by.
Another place near Walt's is the Alpine steakhouse which is known for their "Turducken" featured on Diner's , Drive-ins & Dives. Yet to check that out..
Another quaint spot with great food is French Affair...in the Gulf Gate area on Mall Dr. A real loyal following of regulars there. Small place with some authentic French cooking.
Need Help with blog name....
"Purr...fect Chow"
Some of the others sound perhaps like they are leaning toward cat food!
Travelling to Hawaii and staying at Waikoloa Beach Resort.Any restaurant recommendations?
Yeah, just kidding about the "straight from the Airport thing"....totally opposite direction from WBR. I kinda think you knew that.
Have a great time...Roads are fine...though you will put ALOT of miles on that odometer......especially first visit.
Some of the Casual, local spots are really worth a look. Pine Tree Cafe near the Airport(toward Kailua-Kona) is just one such place.
