Do any stores carry tomato paste in a tube?

VALLEY Produce on VanOwen just east of Reseda has a big glass jar of tomato paste. Tastes good and I believe it was priced cheap (otherwise I may not buy it). I have the same bottle in the frig for over one month and it's still good.

Oh yeah, no metallic taste.

Universal Studios Hilton Buffet; THE HORROR!

Hey Macnut!

I spoke to one of the "chefs" stocking the sushi area and he said that evening buffet was much "better" than the lunch one... prolly costs double too!

Details....geez...where do I start...

1) the crab legs have no flavor...none... you bite in and it feels like a drenched sponge. My son, who is turning into quite tbe foodie piled up on them and only ate one bite...dissapointedly so.

2) Shrimp peel only a tad bit "better" (like it can get worse???)... i don't mind peeling 'em...its fun... but at least make it worth the effort.

3) Salmon (next to the crab legs) Looks beautiful...tasted...well...again, no taste...how do you ruin a salmon?

4) The "sushi" was, well I don't know what it was...couldn't tell they had four or five different colored "things" in one roll... NONE of the inagi's had wasabi, the rice tasted like regular rice... very poor

5) the sashimi....well...warm...maybe my cat woulda liked it.

6) the beef and broccoli....I dunno...what breed horse did they use?

I didn't DARE getting oysters on a shell, though our lovely friend ate them and lived to tell me the next day.

The desserts, though they looked great, tasted like sugared flour....I picked out about five different ones, they all tasted similar. the creme brule... shouda been called creme spackling. the chocolate mousse, was more like chocolate paste... and I finally thought, maybe a bit of cheese cake would mask all and fix my confused palate.... NOT!

I don't expect much at all you can eat joints... but for $75... c'mon... for real, hometown buffet was better.

Universal Studios Hilton Buffet; THE HORROR!

We were invited guests to the universal studios hilton buffet...next time, save the money and go to Hometown Buffet; thier "food" is much better.

The only half decent thing was the overcooked sea bass.

I could write five hundred words, easy, to describe in detail the horror, but why waste time.

In short, though the service was really accomodating, it doesn't make up for lousy food.

We should have had a alot more quality for the $75 they charge.

Is there anywhere with a decent buffet now a days??

Found: Good Tacos in Whittier!

A friend took me to this hole in the wall called Chenas Tacos on Whittier Blvd.

They have one item on the menu... tacos. There are carne asada, pollo, lingua, cabeza and a couple more I can't pronounce.

For $1.10, I thought we would be getting mini tacos, so I ordered five; 3 carne asada, 2 lingua.

They were really nice sized! I was satisfied with eating three, and force down the last two...couldn't let them go to waste.

There is limited seating and if you are in a rush, don't go...we were there around 1 pm and it took about twenty-five minutes to get our order done...

My friend told me there is alway a line there.

The only problem I have is the darn place is its in Whittier and I live in the valley...but I will definately go back...

Good eats!

Where to buy really good watermelon?

kinda on a side note, I was "taught" to pick watermelon by thier size/wieght ratio. If you have two melons of the same size, pick the "heavier" one. has more juice and sugar in it.

I'm in a slump for side dishes, Help!

Canned anything= YUK! If ya gotta go simple, I use frozen. I buy bags of frozen peas, corn, spinach. the boys fav is corn and peas with melted butter and a dash of fresh crushed black pepper.

Mashed potatos are so simple! If you are in a rush, cube them about 1/2 cubes and boil till soft <about 10-15 mins> then mash with butter, a bit of cream and salt...fast and easy!

There's this stuff in a jar called "better than bullion" it is soup base without the MSG cubes have. it comes in chicken, beef, vegetable and even lobster flavor. I use that for most of my sauces and gravy...also very fast prep time.

you can saute any vegetable with some minced garlic and it makes a wonderful, healthy, tasty side.

please, throw away the cans! <grin>

Help with food itinerary for LA visit this week

Heres a suggestion. If you *have* to have dim sum, and it can *only* be that tuesday morn... (god knows why or how you gonna "rush" a dim sum meal)... just call in and order it and eat it to go. Munch away while fighting traffic. Ya, it aint the same thing, like you miss 98% of the fun of it, but at least the palate/brain get sum! =)~

Help with food itinerary for LA visit this week

Ya, if you are going to dim sum in SGV, take the 10w to 710 south which will take you to 105w... that time in the morning you gonna hit traffic...but there is always the car pool lanes.... that might help. IMO, 45 minutes is not realistic...especially going to catch a flight.

OH MAN, I drive from Van Nuys just to clog my arteries with that stuff... you can order anything from DM and it is good!... but why take a chance... don't just order one thing...get a sampling of 'em all! Wifey hears me typing and sez, "a dozen buttermilk, please...and some chocolate ones too!" Son sees me typing and chimes in, "cream filled with chocolate on top!!!"

Avanti Cafe, my first time

Howdie Foodies!

After driving by the place a million times, I and my wife finally stopped to eat.

When I see "wood fired" and "gourmet" used together I am expecting one hellava pizza.

Going into a pizzaria for the first time I always order a "plain" cheese pizza (the true test of a "good" pizzaria) and one of the "specialty" pizzas, the "Wood Burned Delight".

You know what they say that pizza is like sex, even when it's bad...it's still pretty good.

It wasn't bad pizza, it was....uh.... just plain ol' ordinary pizza. not what I would call "gourmet". The cheese, the toppings, the crust...I coulda went to your average mom and pop and got the same thing there...for about half the price.

I dunno...maybe in my age my taste buds are getting worn... am I wrong?

Finally, the workers there, well they weren't rude, but I wouldn't pass out any medals for service either. I don't mind humbly giving away my money to a snooty or "i don't care if you are here" attitude....but the food has to make my toes curl!

Will I ever go back? nah... i got better places to eat pizza that taste way better for cheaper with owners who are happy to see me and my family walk in the front door.

Good eats!

KABUKI sure has changed!

For the first time in, oh, 15 years, my wife and I decided to take our three little ones to Kabuki on Foothill Blvd., Pasadena.

What a surprise! Last time I went, it was an average looking place with great eats. Now, it has become so "corporate" and anesthetized.

We went yesterday at 5pm (we take the kids early so as to not interfere with people who dont have kids or are on a date).

We ordered mostly rolls and a few pieces of sushi. I was kinda happy to get the Fatty Tuna (not many places offer it) but, am I wrong or does sushi need to be served cold, rather than room temperature? Ok, sure we couldn't sit at the bar (tried it once, never again, with an 8 yo, 5 yo and 3 yo), but room temperature???

Per the wife, the spicy tuna was not "spicy" enough (most of the time she says that it is TOO spicy).

15 years ago, the "Dynamite" appetizer was served in a crab shell and had LOTS of roe and the sauce was creamier. Now it's served in a dish sans the roe.

Now, the kids menu, very impressive. Not the usual crappy nuggets and fries or tiny lump of coal some restaurants call a "kids burger" (unless I know the place, I rarely order from the kids menu for the kids. They eat from the "grown up" menu and doggy bag the rest).

The two boys ordered chicken teriyaki and one boy ordered beef teriyaki. Great portions, tasted good (the beef was very tender and tasty). Priced at $6.95 it was a good value.

Also, I like the kids table "distractions" in the form of the coloring booklet they have. It had lots of stuff for them to keep their mind on while we waited.

If I go back to Kabuki, it would be for the way they treat kids.
