So tired of so many food "celebrities"

The best word I can describe the experience is "Tampon"...when you are done being useful, you are tossed out in the trash...

Juan-Carlos Cruz arrested for murder plot - anyone remember his food network show?

yea I am....Juan, I dont know...its not like him, I am not saying he did or didnt do it...but he had a big heart and I dont know what could have led to this....you are right, it is a very sad story indeed

For what its worth, he is a friend of mine....I sh*t when I saw the news...I wrote a bit about it on the blog

report on what you think!

MAY is National Burger Month(?): any suggestions (current please)?

I think its a bit more "over the top" as the B and R burger is just a huge traditional burger...The meat is a bit more flavorful at B and R, but at Hamburger Marys the Crazy Stack is about the toppings and "bun-grilled cheese"...I found it very creative and good...just bring someone to help you eat it

Does anyone remember the old "food detective type show"?

Melly...don't know if I saw them....Trish...I am thinking about a book, I love your title....the whole experience made me do a lot of self realization and prioritize life...It was a trip, people are downright mean sometimes...its amazing what people will say on the internet maybe not understanding that there is a real person....But I got to do some pretty boss stuff....I think this incarnation of Hungry Detective will be interesting...I just have to figure out what I really want to say....Its funny cause I was a "blogger" back in the day when there when people just had "web sites"....then I did TV...and the whole Blog thing broke and I was left out in the dark as far as knowing how to do twitter, blogs and all that stuff....i am getting help but I have to "re learn" everything....but its nice to have the passion back....and I am hungry for more adventures....

Does anyone remember the old "food detective type show"?

Hey, I was just surfing Chowhound and found this thread...Thanks so much for all the kind words...as some of you know I dropped off the food scene after the show was canceled and they went with Guy's diners and dives show....I learned ALOT about the whole food and tv business during that time...made some great friends and saw the true side of some people....

I just started writing again...on my terms...hungrydetective.com just went live and I will be posting about food, travel and tell some of the behinds the scenes stuff from my FN experience's....I also have some cool videos I shot and pics from that time...

I am also starting a project with 6-8 other writers called "burgerspy" ...its just got a single review up at the moment as a place holder and to show the format...but its gonna be fun to do....I am finally excited about food and writing again....

Thanks again for the great comments....it really really made me fell good...I worked really hard on it!

Check out "The Crazy Stack" a new mega burger at Hamburger Mary's...Its got 2 half lb patties, mac and cheese, cheese, bacon, avocado and uses 3 grilled cheese sandwiches (on hawaiian bread no less) for buns...

its the initial review for http://www.burgerspy.com

Hell's Kitchen [moved from L.A. board]

Its always strange to think of myself as a "celebrity"....I guess its sort of true....although, very very very minor one at that....Heck, I was posting here before and will after!....I do love me some hells kitchen though....its a guilty pleasure....heck I think it would be fun to try.....maybe if they have a "celebrity" edition I could do it! anyway, melliot hope I answered your question and saved you some time driving around looking for it!

Hell's Kitchen [moved from L.A. board]

next season....cant say anymore due to NDA...but it was fun and yes I ate...

Hell's Kitchen [moved from L.A. board]

Its not real....its actually a permanant set in Culver City...they are finished shooting for quite sometime...I did manage to get an "invite" a while back....it was fun...

Bring back the Hungry Detective

I can pretty much tell you that would never happen....at least the guest spot part of it. I am now a patrol Sgt working weekend night shift..back in the grinder and let me tell you, things are getting more and more violent out there....Amne$ia was fun and hard as heck...but I pulled that burrito question out nicely!

Bring back the Hungry Detective

He is shooting it now....I wanted to go, but it didnt work out.....maybe next trip!

Bring back the Hungry Detective

You guys are too funny...I have lost 30 of my Hungry Detective lbs and am down to a B cup...I will try to see if we can get the missing show segments up someplace....I think FN.com would be good for that...but it all comes down to $ for editing them....Bob Tuschman is a good guy and I know liked the show so maybe I can get him to agree to let us put together a webisode of the unseen footage (the Bowen Island stuff is great)....I am proud of the fact that its still playing on FN now....I always tried to be the real deal and I think I stayed true to that..what you see is what you get...I met a lot of folks during the shoots and it was great, I still enjoy getting e mails from new fans that are seeing it for the first time....and I still give rec's to folks looking for great places to eat.....I think that was the whole idea of the show in the first place....I guess people can e mail and ask FN if the show will come out on DVD with the bonus footage...that would be cool!...Heck, even I have not see that stuff...and as far as Feasting on Asphalt....what a great time...Jean Claude came out on patrol with me a few weeks ago and gave me the photo of Alton and I eating the giant burger ....man that was good!

Bring back the Hungry Detective

Thanks....we do have about 6-9 segments that never aired...I would really like to get them edited and at least put on the FN web site or made into a little "missing evidence" special....one place is Bowen Island in SC...it was great, but the place burned down after we filmed (its been rebuilt and Bourdain filmed there) and we also did Sarcones in Philly....that place was good! I would love to do more....but thats life I guess.....our ratings were ok and we beat the show that aired ahead of us a several occasions....

Highly recommend the "Eat This Not That" book

I am right there with you, my wife and I bought it at Costco...love it and use it a lot...I have lost 25 lbs so far....down to 256...my highest was 290....but I admit, its not just using the book...its eating better....

No Reservations:Hawaii - back out of the hole

The tourist luau's are a huge part of the experience for the majority of visitor's to the islands. I have been to them and if you go with an open mind, they are pretty fun...I think that is what Tony was doing....keeping an open mind and just going with the flow of the mai tai's

No Reservations:Hawaii - back out of the hole

I liked the Puka Dog segment.....made me hungry...I live in an area with a lot of Hawaiians and I have grown to love me some spam and some loco moco (I saw it on Tony's Table but it was not mentioned)..

as for future stuff w me and my gang...yes, we are working on stuff.....cant say any more here (never now who is reading).......

I am on the new NBC show Amnesia march 14th......it was fun!

No Reservations:Hawaii - back out of the hole

Its hard to get everything right for every person so you just do your best! There are also other factors such as, maybe that great place that should be featured in a certain city does not want to be on TV (gasp)....I can say firsthand that the NR crew does a great amount of research puts out a great show on a consistant basis....most people think you just roll in with a camera and film....I know I did....but its just not that easy....also sometimes you think something is going to be great, but then you get there and its the total opposite.

MOJOTV - What do you think of their food shows?

I just got HD and MOJO. I love the look of the shows...I like 3 sheets and Pressure Cook has some nice shots too....I think MOJO has a lot of potential to produce some great programing....

TitleThe Mmm Face – Do we really want to watch people eat?

Its not tough...its only tough the ninth or tenth take......and of course the food is usually cold....ahh....the things I could talk about....it was an experience to say the least and I am glad I did it...

TitleThe Mmm Face – Do we really want to watch people eat?

Let me tell you, the shots where you are eating are in my opinion the hardest and most nerve wracking of all the shots in a show....you dont know if what you are eating is gonna explode all over you, is there some drunken idiot in the background pissing you off (yes that has occurred), then you have to take a bite that is not too small, not too big (because the focus groups said so) and then chew, swallow and say something clever all in a few seconds because you have to break down the lighting package and the van is about to get a ticket outside....ahhh....what an experience....not to mention there are like 20 people sitting 3 feet away all staring at you....

The Next Iron Chef

It is....only stuff like bringing water to boil, etc is done prior....the time is a "hard" time w no exceptions.

The Next Iron Chef

And you know this how?...

Why are detectives so often chowhounds? Who are your favorites?

I think its because as Detectives we see so many places during investigations and all have a little file of "places we gotta go back too"....thats how I have found so many of my favorite places...

Hungry Detective- LOS ANGELES

Hungry Detective is finished...I should be doing Iron Chef again next month as a judge....I have a few things in the works....lets hope I can get to do something that is quality and showcases food and people who need the exposure....we will see...it was a fun ride!

Hungry Detective- LOS ANGELES

I had one of each, a carnitas, al pastor and asada...that scene was longer, but we had to switch it w Rizzo's so we only showed the asada...but the plate has all 3 kinds of tacos on it.....too bad too, cause I gave a pretty good description of each type and people not familier w tacos could have learned a bit....oh well, thats TV...

Best Burger in LA

No way, buns were way to much and overpowered the burger as opposed to the soft buns of B and R (I know that sounds strange)....That said Giant Texas burger was not bad, good meat and toppings....

Where can I find the best fried chicken?

Dont Forget Dinah's by LAX on Sepulveda

Best Burger in LA

Lets not forget B and R Old Fashion Burgers in Hawthorne...The Monster Royal Burger is a sight to be seen!
