Burnt ends in Toronto?

Which is what i said, i just didn't get into the detail as to what the difference between the two portions of pork on the butt are (which as you pointed out are the outside bark and the inside meat). And as i stated, burnt ends is a dish that involves a special preparation of the point on a brisket, while mr.brown and ms.white are just ordering terms used in reference to pork. The two terms have nothing to do with each other, which was my main point and something you failed to pick up on in your attempt to try to show people how much bbq knowledge you have.

Burnt ends in Toronto?

Mr.brown and Ms.white refer to the different portions of pork found in a bbq butt, burnt ends are the point of a brisket, cubed and smoked a second time until crispy.

Scarborough Gems

That deal fell through when the college tried to amend their plans to include condos and people got upset, so everything is back to square one.

My grandma had numerous memories of high tea at the old guild inn back in the days. Would be niceto see a return but not sure howviable an option that would be. One can hope though!

Scarborough Gems

Ah! Finally refound the thread this post was from! Was searching for it after my horrible burger at MFC but for some reason couldn't pull it up. I went and tried them back in September remembering having read this review you wrote. Burger came and it was one of those miserable bear claw shaped frozen burgers with frozen french fries(though you at least warned about the fries). Having enjoyed the stone cottage on many many occasions and only once having a bad meal (incidently fish and chips) i couldn't believe that they had so totally changed their menu since your review. As recompence i request you give the cottage another try. Try one of their fresh ground burgers, or perhaps the grilled cheese with bacon and chutney (so good), and enjoy with an innis and gunn from the taps. 1000 times better than mfc!

Crawfish Boil in Toronto

Whenever I have looked through the freezers I have seen them, so I would assume so.

If you don't require fresh, Ikea sells frozen ones (crawfish are also popular in Scandinavia).

Harissa sauce in Scarborough?

Have you tried Arz bakery on Lawrence between Warden and Pharmacy? I have bought harissa from there before. Can't remember the specific brand I bought (had to take out of can and put in a jar), but it was an incredibly spicy one. Really needs to be cut with other ingredients to enjoy fully.

Scarborough To-Do List - What have I missed? What SHOULD I miss?

I've never tried their samosas as there were several other really good samosa places near by, go figure. The Thalis are good, you will get a couple veg and your choice of meat. I love their Chana and dal, and both the goat and butter chicken were really good for meats.

Scarborough To-Do List - What have I missed? What SHOULD I miss?

Not so hole in the wall-y. It looks like the typical indian sweet shop that you will find in low rise warehouse style strip malls. Only difference is that they have a seating area and sell some really good meals instead of only focusing on the sweets.

Scarborough To-Do List - What have I missed? What SHOULD I miss?

Northern style. I love their meat "curries" well worth the extra dollar or two over the veg thali. Was a common stop when we lived in the area and my wife was craving comfort food but didn't want to cook it.

ISO: Isaan (Thai) restaurants, cuisine, groceries, anything

There is a little Thai restaurant in the food court of First Markham Place. Not sure if it is Isaan cuisine, but there are a number of authentic thai dishes that aren't your standard north american menu items. The sausage plate is my fave. You get a pork/lemongrass/sticky rice sausage (which is an isaan dish) and a kind of beef jerky, along with sticky rice, papaya salad and thom yum broth. Good stuff. Owner is very nice and shared the sausage ingredients with me so I could make my own (turned out great). Worth a try if you are in the area.

Scarborough To-Do List - What have I missed? What SHOULD I miss?

technically it is north york since it west of vic park, but I love going there for a tali. I almost always get with meat, but the veg are strong enough to stand on their own and I occasionally order the veg plate.

Looking for a big brisket

Galleria has some good looking angus ones with much better fat content than the ones I have seen/bought from skyland. Being a better cut it is pricier though. I believe it was $4 or $5 per pound.

The best Schnitzel

Gourmet Schnitzel House is quite tasty and the owners are really nice and accommodating as well. Also quite a good deal compared to the nearby Little Bavaria. Desserts looked really good, but we were too full to try them.

Chowfind? Shahi Tiffin- Pakistani-Danforth and Dawes

We have been going to Shahi Karahi for years and swear by the place. Nice people, great food and awesome prices. They have had a string of secondary sites that always seem to fail (warden and eglington, Kingston Road west of Liverpool in Pickering). Hopefully this one has more staying power for you. Take out only dishes means they won't give it to you on plates as at that price it's too cheap for them to want to do cleanup. If they get crowded they would probably ask you to leave but otherwise you would be safe eating the take-out only at a table as long as you don't ask them for tableware.
Their karahis are amazing and you should definately try them sometime.

Korean ingredients

You'll also find it at the korean grocers on bloor if you would rather head south then north. I'm pretty sure I have also bought it at T&T if you ever find yourself near one of their stores. Finally, there is a Korean grocer on Laurence 1/2 block west of Warden if you find yourself east of midtown.

Where to buy Chipotle Peppers??

Thanks for the tip. I'll hit up my market this summer and see if any of the farmers are doing jalapenos and can bring in some reds. Of course, if I just took over more of the garden for peppers I could probably keep more of them to fully ripe.

Where to buy Chipotle Peppers??

my problem is keeping them on the plant long enough to get fully ripe and red. Seeing all those delicious green peppers begging to be made into ABTs or thrown into fresh salsas and sausages.
It would be great if the stores ever carried red jalapenos with any regularity. I'll usually only ever find one or two mixed in amidst the green.

Fried smoked chicken at Buster Rhino's....run, don't walk.

Just a note so people don't get a surprise let down. The Oshawa location is a franchise that they ship pre-cooked goods to a couple times a week. I doubt that they would be a part of the Wednesday smoked/fried chicken special.

Johnny Midnights Smokehouse BBQ

I see the trend as a good thing/bad thing. It's a good thing in that to have GOOD bbq restaurants able to open and survive, there has to be a public interest in the food. That does seem to be occurring now. The bad of course, is that we will have to deal with every 20 poor attempts at BBQ by people just trying to cash in on a trend for every restaurant that knows how to do it.

Mexican / Latin grocer or good place to get authentic salsas and corn tortillas in Markham

Also check your local no-frills, they have been stocking a decent amount of authenticate mexican products lately (at least the ones in SE Scarborough). We can choose between 2-3 brands of authenticate corn tortillas, and they stock a couple different mexican brands of pantry items.

Hmmm, haven't had it all in Toronto, but I still managed to score an 87. Guess I am close to being able to kick the bucket! >.>

There are really only 2-3 things on that list that I think you would have any trouble finding in Toronto. Gotta love this city.

New BBQ Place in Scarborough - Rally Sports Bar

I fully intend to try this place out. I am always willing to give anyone a shot as some of the places that I have found good Q have been quite surprising.

Two items to mention/contribute 1) It is actually possible to "fake" a smoke ring. Through some Cure #1 on a piece of meat for one hour then rinse off before you cook. It won't be enough to give the cured taste/texture, but the nitrates will have started to penetrate the first bit of the meat and will give you the red of the smoke ring without the smoke.

2) Though they may be about the sports bar first, at least they care enough about their meat to list the specific manufacturer of their smokers. Sure it isn't a pure stick burner, but it does show that they have pride in their food/process.
Family health being willing I plan to hit them up on the weekend and will post my thoughts.

Pork alert

Food Basics had approximately 10lb shoulders on sale at 88c/lb last week. Went in this morning and they have received the discount stickers (my local food basics had at least 40 of them). Got two 10lbers for $4.50 or so each. Utterly ridiculous. My wife was already complaining that I had too many homemade sausages and cuts of meat for smoking in the freezer, but I couldn't turn it down at less than 50c/lb!

Where to find Prague #1 Powder in Mississauga for making a ham...Superstore just had a big sale on pork leg...

Bass pro shops at Vaughn mills sells cure #1 year round in their sausage making aisle. Most Canadian places sell 1% instead of the 6.75% of cure 1 which makes following most American recipes a pain in the butt.

Belgian Fries?

The dutch curry sauce you can get in the bottle is basically a mix of ketchup and curry paste, with some raisins and such in it as well.

The curry sauce from the Tara inn was a really nice thin sauce (basically came looking like a cup of soup!) it had a good deal of turmeric in it (my poor white shirt) and had some small bits of veg and stuff in it and was both spicy (flavour not heat) and sweet.

If either of those is close to what you had in Holland then you know where you need to go here ;)
