What are the great restaurants that only take reservations for 6 or more?

Yes, large format is fine.

Tried Tertulia - that was my pick - unfortunately they only do an early and a late seating and our group can't...

I feel like I'm always hearing about them and now that we're actually eligible, I can't recall any! Please refresh my memory. Thanks!

Restaurant for Steamed MD-style crabs on LBI?

We're on LBI for the week and looking for a place to eat steamed MD-style crabs. Old bay, brown paper, mallets, the whole deal -- no tablecloths please -- although a menu that includes some non-crab options would be nice for the pickier folks. Does this sort of thing exist here or am I deluding myself? Thanks!

Co. vs. Kin Shop for lunch - with a toddler

Is either one of these better/worse than the other? It's for a Friday, on the early side. A highchair would probably come in handy...Thanks.

Sustainable pork in brooklyn?

I just bought some organic guanciale at Caputo's on Court St. I know organic does not necessarily equal sustainable but it's a start....

John Dory : waits at lunch?

Yes, and I can imagine (and have heard) there's a lot of that at dinner.

John Dory : waits at lunch?

We ended up going a couple of weeks after I originally posted this question...hence the delay. Walked in on a Tuesday at around 12:45 and were seated right away -- it was mostly full, but there were seats at the bar open. I can't rally imagine going at dinner unless you enjoy the standing room only thing. There really aren't that many seats. Overall impression: definitely solid, but not mind-blowing, and for the prices, pretty skimpy portions. I'm not one for super-sized plates but these were pretty meager.

We ordered:

razor clam crudo (I'm not eating raw fish now so I didn't try this, but my sister liked it well enough).

crab and puntarelle salad (I thought it needed a bit more acid. It was also dressed with a very rich olive oil that sort of overwhelmed...at $17 i'm not sure I'd get it again).

oyster pan roast (my personal favorite; though small, it is rich so you don't want a big bowl. the uni crostini is ridiculously good).

chorizo stuffed squid with smoked tomato (nicely balanced, hearty and homey but not exceedingly heavy).

parker house rolls (a must have; this food demands sopping and these rolls really fit the bill.

dessert: chocolate pot with whisky cream and orange zest and an oat cookie (if you like chocolate, you'll dig this. It's basically a dense pot de creme. The orange provides just the right subtle contrast to the richness and booziness) and the cookie some sweet/salty/crunchy balance).

Bottom line: if you have a voracious appetite, have a snack first, unless money is no object. I would have liked to have sample more dishes, but it was cost-prohibitive. Perhaps going with a larger party would take care of that.

John Dory : waits at lunch?

Thanks. We're going today (Tues) now. I'll post back about waits and what we ate. Unfortunately I'm pregnant so I can't eat raw oysters or crudos but it seems like there's a lot to choose from.

John Dory : waits at lunch?

Are 2 of us likely to have to wait for a table at 12:30 on a Thursday?

Also open to recs from the lunch menu...Thanks.

Palate cleansers ... for the cook?

Sometimes if I have half a lemon lying around I'll suck on that. I like sour things, so it's not for everyone but it really does the job!

Torrisi turkey (nyc)

Wondering if anyone has taken a stab at the recipe for the amazing turkey breast served at Torrisi Italian Specialities and published in the NY Times...planning to try it for xmas and looking for any feedback. Thanks.

Dried hominy in NYC

Anyone seen it? Manhattan or Brooklyn will do. Thanks.

Help me find Duck Sausage!

You must have gone on an off day because Fairway UWS sells D'Artagnan brand duck (and armagnac?) sausage. It's packaged and sits opposite the meat counter.

Jive Turkey?

Yay or nay? Thanksgiving, whole bird. It sounds like reviews are better for whole turkeys than for parts and their regular menu. It also sounds like the waits are insane so it might be worth it to have it shipped, as silly as that seems. Anyone want to weigh in? Thanks.

Strong Place

We ended up at Brucie and loved it! Had the "market caesar" which was really arugula, roasted squash, roasted onions and fried chickpeas with a caesar-like dressing. Also the burratta app with eggplanta caponata. Both were awesome. For mains, my husband had ribs I had a delicious seafood stew -- little spicy, tomatoey, and with all the fish and shellfish perfectly cooked! Dessert was okay - they only had 2 things - we got a chcocolate brown butter tart. The bb crust was great but the tart itself had almond extract and I am not a fan of the stuff. Super friendly staff and great service. All told, an excellent addition to the neighborhood. Can't wait til they open for lunch!

Strong Place

Trying to decide between SP and Brucie....you didn't really sell me on SP, though the menu does look interesting.

Anyone else want to help me decide?

Strong Place

Any reviews? This place has been around for a few months now. Considering trying it but I'd like to hear more. Thanks.

NYC Chef returning to hometown for one dinner out...help me choose

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in. Komi does seem interesting but, as others have said, I don't think it's the right fit this time. I made a tentative reservation at Blue Duck, but, based on some of the comments here, I'm not sure I'm all that excited about comfort food, even if it's of a slightly more upscale variety. I think we may end up at Palena again, assuming we can get in. Are we likely to have a hard time getting a table for this Sat night?

NYC Chef returning to hometown for one dinner out...help me choose

Thanks for the many suggestions. Bibiana's menu looks great. My dad is not a huge Indian lover so I think Rasika is out. And I think we'd like something slightly more upscale than a bistro, so we'll have to save Central for another trip when we have more time. I've narrowed it down to Blue Duck, Palena, or Bibiana. Can anyone offer a comparison on Palena vs Bibiana in terms of atmosphere/formality?

Thanks.

NYC Chef returning to hometown for one dinner out...help me choose

My husband and I will be visiting my parents next weekend for a rare trip to DC, my hometown. We're very adventurous eaters, my parents slightly less so. We're looking for something moderately expensive (ie, no Citronelle) and not stuffy or too precious.

A couple of ideas/questions:

-Years ago we ate at Palena and I remember loving it. Is it still great?
-Husband and I had apps at West End Bistro soon after it opened and thought the food was great...the space, less so. Interested to hear how the food is these days. Also is Eric Ripert still attached?
-Just ran across Blue Duck Tavern and I'm intrigued. Can anyone share any recent experiences?

Any other ideas? Many thanks.

Am I the only one reading the Momofuku Cookbook?

Just tried the pickled watermelon rind recipe. I was so excited about this one. Yuck. Way too sweet. The little bit of flesh that he says to leave on the rind was slimy and the rind itself was too crunchy (hard, fibrous) for my taste. I followed the recipe exactly. Has anyone else tried this? I'd love to know your results.

I might try it again, cutting the sugar, leaving no flesh on, and simmering the rind for longer.

Mile End crowds?

Considering bring some friends in from out of town to Mile End on Saturday morning - I know we won't get to experience the real deal - but i think they'll enjoy it anyway. What are crowds like then? And for future reference, what about prime times? Thanks.

Cobble Hill\Carroll Gardens Questions

I would add that Los Paisanos has a large selection of D'artagnan products and they'll order ANYTHING. A few months ago they ordered me 10 D'art squab with a day's notice. Taught me how to butcher a veal breast. They also carry homemade stocks - chicken, veal, beef. Man, they're the greatest.

Second Caputo's and Stinky. Union Market is a very worthy addition for specialty items, though not cheap. They do have fresh juices. For produce I usually go across the street to K +Y. The farmer's market on Sunday on Carroll Street has chicken, eggs, meat, as well as produce.

Ma Peche - dinner crowds?

Ugh - that is annoying. I can see the argument for that when you're trying to turn tables (and actually are full) but otherwise, come on. I am almost tempted to give up on the Chang empire altogether with all this ego-driven, hoop jumping. What ever happened to service?

Ma Peche - dinner crowds?

Happy to hear that. I have a feeling once they get reviewed that the midtown set will catch on. Plenty of other restaurants in the area do just fine without downtowners. I'll pounce while I can!

Totto Ramen

Bummer! I was really looking forward to this but not with those parameters!

Ma Peche - dinner crowds?

I'd like to try Ma Peche for dinner on a Thursday night between say, 7 and 8 pm. How have the waits been? I'll be with my parents, who have, maybe, 20 minutes in them before they get cranky. Barring this, I'm open to other midtown recs - just not of the super pricey variety. Thanks.

Torrisi Italian Specialties

When I went about a week ago we had a side order of the turkey and it was amazing! Actually, we didn't even order it; 2 guys at the table next to us saw me eyeing theirs and offered it when they were done! I chose to think they were using share plates...but it was so good i didn't care. The antipasti were great - rabe, mozz, a side of asparagus (a special) and cauliflower. Shared the eggplant parm - delicious. Loved the whole vibe. I do wish they served more sliced meats, good as the turkey was.

Can anyone discuss how they manage the dinner crowds/list/wait?...I'd love to go, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into. Thanks.
