Cardoons in LA?

Thanks. Sunday morning doesn't work for me.

My shock was the number of things available at a neighborhood market or a Safeway that are basically unavailable in Los Angeles.

Cardoons in LA?

Yesterday I was in San Feancisco shopping for dinner with my son. We were SoMa in a neighborhood market. They had beautiful, very fresh cardoons for $3 a pound. I was shocked to see them. My son says that Safeway has them. This was not LA.

They were delicious. Does anyone know a market in LA, preferably the Westside, that has cardoons?

What shocked me was the depth of the vegetable and cheese departments in a neighborhood market in a very middle class area.

What to do now that Thees' is gone.

Thanks all. Thee's was a true American bakery. There are several reasonably good French bakers in Los Angeles, but not American.

What to do now that Thees' is gone.

For years Thees' at the Farmers' Market was the source of hamburger buns, hot dog buns, hot cross buns, and amazing bread and marzipan fruit. Now it iswhatever it is.

Any suggestions as to where to find these articles? Westside preferred.

Thanks.

Chinese Vegetarian in SGV

The ones that specialize in the Buddhist inspired cuisine where soy and gluten are used to create faux meat dishes. The emperor went vegetrian for 30 days a year, and had little interest in turnips.

Chinese Vegetarian in SGV

My vegetarian daughter arrived last night from Canada. We dine tonight.

What is the best place now? I only know Happy Family on Atlantic in Monterey Park.

Thanks so much.

BEST Push Car Dim Sum

I am taking an 87 year old here from Ukraine t
for her first dum sum experience. I have told her about the cart system, which fascinates her. For myself I might go to Ocean Star, but it us getting pretty tired.

Would anyone suggest a cart restaurant that is both excellent and fresh?

Thanks.

Hand Made Tortillas In West Los Angeles

Does anyone know a source for handmade tortillas (both corn and flour) on the Westside? I am trying to find ones that are actually patted out by hand.

In the alternative, any shop/stand that takes pride in their tortillas?

Thanks.

Best sources of USDA Prime Beef?

A problem with Huntington is that their beef is from Harris Ranch, which even when prime is not great. It cannot be compared with the Italian breed of cattle raised in Montana that is sold at Marconda's at the other side of the market. Harris Ranch is good for a supermarket. Lobel's would not give it shelf space; neither would Marconda's

California Olive Oil in Los Angeles

I am looking for suggestions as to places to buy, and brands to buy.

Some in the $20 range, either in the Provence style, or the gusty southern.

Also, a good cooking oil

I figure it is time to try our own.

Thanks.

Dim Sum in the South Bay

I recognize that it will be inferior to the SGV, but I have an elderly friend who would like to try some, but is not able to stand the crowds in the SGV.

Is there any restaurant in the South Bay, or even the Westside? And, is it worth eating at?

Thanks.

Pain du Jour (Santa Monica) What gives?

I was at Pain du Jour again this morning, and I had the same negative experience as the last fewtimes. When it first opened, when the Alsatian family had it, it was as good as any small shop in Paris or Lyon. I did not go for a bit, and the last few times everything has changed. First, I asked the sales person for pain de brioche, and she did not know what it was. So I tried egg bread, and she said challah (This is not Fred's bakery). So I got it and it was second rate as what the baguette, which like supermarket bread in France at best. Next time I asked for a croissant and was handed something that was straight. So I said, no a croissant. I was told it was straight because it was made with butter. (Is not croissant still the French word for crescent?) It was ok, but no different than many places Today the pain au chocolate was crisp on the outside, but collapsed inside. Each time I have gotten a baguette, it is industrial. Today I asked for one crisp, and one soft, and the sales person had no idea what I was talking about. Also, two baguettes and two pain au chocolate were almost $10.

I asked for the name of the owner, and it was not the family I knew. It was such a magical place early on Sunday morning.

Or am I totally wrong?

Boudin Blanc/Saucisson

And EDSK, which I have loved for probably 40 years, does not do French sausages of any kind. They do German sausages and some South African things, but it is not French. Just as a Weisswurst, Bockwurst is not a boudin blanc.

Fishmonger Westwood/Bev Hills

I must disagree. I bought Dungeness crab there recently, and it was mushy, had little taste, and cost $23 a crab. They were selling sardines, think bait fish, for $12.95 a pound.

Further, the fishmonger told me that they would be selling frozen, not fresh Dungeness, from now on.

I probably have gone there for 50 years, and I am not going back. It is a totally different outfit.

Best chocolates in LA?

While Littlejohn's at the Farmers' Market is famous for their English toffee, their chocolates, hand dipped there, are amazing. During the week you can watch them being made at the window in the back of the stall. I think they are as good as Li-Lac.

Oh Boy! Doughboys Is Back (Almost)

I know this first hand. I had to use the restroom, was told it was not allowed, and had to leave my lunch and my friends and make a dash for the Farmers' Market. I never went back. And I am certain I was not the only one with the experience. They insisted that they did not have to have a restroom, which is absurd.

Oh Boy! Doughboys Is Back (Almost)

I think that people need to understand that the problem with the 3rd Street site was that the only restroom had to be accessed through the kitchen. At some point the Health Dept put an end to that, and Doughboys became a restaurant without a restroom. I am not sure if it was legal, but it certainly stopped people from eating there.

BEST CHINESE MARKET IN SGV

I have traded at 99 Ranch for close to 20 years. It seems that it has gotten very tired. It is not as clean as it was, and there is little routine maintenance.

I was wondering if a newer, more modern market has opened while I have been pushing my way through 99 Ranch. Please let me know.

Thanks.

Santa Monica Seafood Rest in peace.

SMS in Santa Monica often had them in the fall. However, they were $4 a pound which is fair for bait fish. Saturday they were $12 which is insane.

Santa Monica Seafood Rest in peace.

I wanted to have cracked Dungeness crab for a first course last night. I went, as I have often in the past, to Santa Monica Seafood. They only had previously frozen/thawed crabs. When I explained my surprise to the fishmonger, he said that they rarely had they fresh. He assured me that they were just as good, etc. He was not truthful. The crab was embarrassing. It was mushy, had little taste, and was watery. It was the worst crab I have ever had. It was also $23 a crab.

If I would have had the time, I would have gone to 99 Ranch Market and cooked it myself.

When I stated to write this, I noticed the highly critical reviews posted here of SMS. I wish that I would have checked the reviews first. Like I said, it was an embarrassment.

Oh, and they did have sardines ..... at $12 a pound.
