Best Dim Sum restaurant in Mpls/St. Paul, MN

Thanks TDQ. And now that I have read back, I realize that there were only two people who said they liked Jun Bo, and one... maybe wasn't actually saying that, since all that was said was, "Have we really gone this far in a Best MSP Dim Sum post with nary a mention of Jun Bo. Really?" That might have been noting that NO ONE wanted it on the list the best. And then later is was followed by a "I have to second Jun Bo. Easily the best."

Perhaps I actually ended up there because it was in a convenient location, and because I thought there were a few people here saying it was a "favorite."

Now that I know better, I think I'll try some of the other possibilities mentioned in this post. :-)

Best Dim Sum restaurant in Mpls/St. Paul, MN

I have to say that I was not impressed with Jun Bo. I was there last Sunday with a good friend of mine from out of state. He happens to love Dim Sum, and whenever I am traveling with him, whether it is in Seattle, San Francisco, or New York, we always end up at a Dim Sum restaurant. And so, we tried Jun Bo.

The restaurant was crowded and not well set up. There were repeated traffic jams of carts in between the tables, and the selection at the particular time we were there was not good. Now, I might have been willing to forgive all of that, if the food had been good, but it wasn't. Some of the items that were supposed to be served hot, were cold, others had lost their texture from being oversteamed, or maybe just sitting on the carts too long...

I was really hoping for a great Dim Sum experience and based on what I had read here, that was what I expected.

I am going to make a point of going back, not because I want a repeat of this past experience, but because I want to believe that I just happened to be there on a bad day...

MSP: Twin Cities South of 494 finds

There is a new restaurant in Lakeville as well, Porter House. I haven't been there, but my mom was there just a few weeks after it opened. She said the prices were high considering its location, but that her steak was very good. Has anyone else been there yet? Have you heard anything about it?

What about Kami and Enjoy? Both in Apple Valley - and use the same parking lot. I like them both. Kami is very new and I think I've said this here before, but I they don't seem to have much of a customer base yet. I don't know exactly when they opened, and I really hope they survive, but if they don't start bringing in some customers, I don't think they will make it.

Best Sushi/Sashimi in Minneapolis/St. Paul?

Has anyone been to Musashi? I just saw it downtown this weekend, but haven't heard anything about it yet. The awning over the windows say sushi...

Hennepin Theatre District - Restaurant Reviews/Recommendations (msp)

I went to see Jersey Boys on Saturday night and really struggled to pick a restaurant prior to the show. The Hennepin Theatre District website lists the following restaurants:

Bellanote
The Capital Grille
Chambers Kitchen
Cosmos
Manhattan's
Mission American Kitcher & Bar
Palamino
R. Norman's
Solera
Oak Grill - Macy's
Basil's

However, there isn't much info about these restaurants on their site. I'd love to know what you think about any/all of the above. And if you've already written about these restaurants, I'd love to see that too.

I'd really like to know what you ordered, and whether or not you liked it. Were you there for lunch or dinner? How was the service? Would you recommend it or not? Do you need reservations, and if so, how much advance notice?

Are there others in that area that didn't make the Hennepin Theatre District's website?

We ended up at Chambers. It was fabulous. I'll write about it in more detail a little later.

(p.s. this is my first attempt at adding links to places.... I hope it works.)

Recommendations - kid friendly in downtown Mpls?

Hi Cheeseguysgirl, just wanted to follow up and let you know that I took everyone to dinner at Mission. It was a hit. Everyone loved the wontons with the malt vinegar sauce appetizer, and waiter recommended the risotto croquettes with a caesar salad to share for the two youngest girls. The croquettes were served in a large bowl as finger food. I was surprised (everything was so elegantly presented...) but seriously delighted to find the staff at Mission so creative in keeping even the youngest guests happy. I had the adult version of the kids meal... risotto croquettes, polenta ratatouille, asparagus, and steamed spinach. My sister had the smoked miso salmon and loved it. My children, both foodies like their mom, also loved everything at Mission. One had a steak, the other the kobe pot roast. After the show we all went to Palamino's for dessert, which was also a huge hit.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Best Sushi/Sashimi in Minneapolis/St. Paul?

I might have to reconsider my opinion of Anemonie. I was there last week, and it is different. They even changed the Miso soup. I haven't lost faith yet, but it wasn't nearly as good as it used to be.

I did find another sushi restaurant that I like though. It's south of the cities, in Apple Valley, Kami. It's a new restaurant, but the food was great. I was there on a Thursday evening between 6:30 and 8:30, and my one concern is that the restaurant was virtually empty. Not a bad thing if you don't want to wait to get a table, but also not a good sign for its future viability. I am hoping that its just that it's new, and the word hasn't got out yet. I certainly like having a sushi option that is closer to me then Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Recommendations - kid friendly in downtown Mpls?

My sister and I have tickets to Disney's High School Musical tomorrow night and we are looking for a restaurant downtown - somewhere not to far from the Hennepin Theatre District, where we can bring our kids that they will like and where we won't be disturbing the other guests. There will be seven us in all, my sister and I, plus the five kids (3 girls, ages 9, 12 and 14 - 2 boys, ages 11 and 15). They are all well behaved and good eaters, but my sisters three girls are a bit more picky than me or my kids. Sushi, Indian, and other more "exotic" options are probably not good, unless the restaurant also offers some more generic "kid fare."

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Suggestions for a good date place?

I was in NY in August and my date took me to a fabulous little restaurant near the finance district in Manhattan - Acappellas. I'd suggest reservations. It was on the high end for price, but it was fabulous. The restaurant is dark, with most of the light coming from candles. For a quiet and peaceful evening, the ambience is perfect. After the meal they serve a homemade blueberry moonshine. (don't eat the berries, they are like the worm....)

{MSP} Chris and Rob's Coming to West 7th...

It's not actually "in town" but if you are ever out and about south of the metro area, Tiny's in Northfield (on the main drag - Division St) has a great Chicago dog. One of my best friends grew up in Chicago and everytime he is in MN he makes a trip to Tiny's and swears they are the best.

MSP- Favorite Indian Food?

I can't wait to see the replies to this. I live in Northfield and feel very fortunate that we have two very good Indian restaurants here, Chapati and Kurry Kabab, both locally owned and authentic. But when I am in Minneapolis - which is a lot - I don't know where to go for good Indian food.

P.S. I am new to chowhound and feel so lucky to have found this place. What a great resource.

Best Sushi/Sashimi in Minneapolis/St. Paul?

I love, love, love sushi, sashimi, and nigiri... I find that I tend to have mood swings and switch favorites from time to time when it comes to my favorite sushi places, but my most current fave is Anemoni. I see that one other person posted about Anemoni, and I am going to second their opinion. They are one of the best. And an added plus, if you happen to be dining with someone who is down-right frightened (like my mom) by the thought of sushi, they offer the full menu of Azia (the two restaurants are connected) which should sastisfy the more sqeemish diners.

Also, if you have children who have not yet tried sushi, take them to Anemoni before the main dinner rush, sit at the bar with them, and sushi chef (is that the right terminology?) will cater to their every question and indulge them with whatever they want to taste... and when he's done, he'll make a boat out of a pineapple, sails included...

We live an hour from Anemoni and my kids (ages 11 and 15) beg me to take them there now.
